360 dashboard update bricks new console

Already posted it in the dashboard thread, but thought this deserved it's own thread.
Sorry if I missed another thread about this, didn't find one.

Multiple Dutch websites are reporting that when you activate an entirely new Xbox 360 since the dashboard update, that you can't, there will be a fatal error. If you take these steps, it will happen:
- Start the console;
- Select language;
- Choose 'I am a member of Xbox Live';
- Download mandatory dashboard update;
- Update installs;
- System reboot, Xbox 360 logo appearst;
- Fatal 'System Error E71'.

Only solution after that is to replace the console.
It has been confirmed by multiple people that got replacement 360's yesterday that this is the real deal.

So this basically means that anyone who gets a replacement 360 is affected by this problem and can return their console the very same day.

Is it just me or does the console take longer to get from initial boot to the dashboard? :\

I noticed that too. I used to get the 360 boot-up animation while the ring of light does its little animation. Now, I don't get the boot-up animation on the TV till after the ring of light's done with its show. I've booted up twice since the update and every time I've got my fingers crossed my 360's not busted. :P

I'm reading on various boards that this is happening to other brand new consoles in other parts of the world as well as consoles that have never had a dashboard update previously.

Somebody at IGN said he just got a refurbished console back from Microsoft today and as soon as he plugged it in and downloaded the update, it bricked his system. Apparently his refurb unit had not received the Spring update first and it looks like this is the problem.

If your console is brand new, or never had any of the dashboard updates... do not install today's update.

...what the hell? Don't they test this stuff?

Id think they would test every version of console to see if the update is compatible, and Id be surprised if they didnt. I wonder if this is as widespread as is being led on.

Thats f***ing terrible. Do these firmware update often go shit house? I doubt this bad, but still. I'm not looking forward dealing with it.

I've not heard a report to the contrary so far, and keep reading more reports of this bug occuring.
I'm thinking Microsoft will have busy times at tech support again.

I just read at 1up that Microsoft put out this update to brick modded consoles. Are some innocents just caught in the crossfire?

This is a different thing.
Those wouldn't produce the E71 error either if I'm not mistaken.

I think it's a combination of two things.

1) Modders claiming innocence.
2) On any given day, some 360's are dying. Even new ones. True of any console. So one guy has his new 360 die after the download. As my stats professor loved to say, correlation does not equal causation.

What if it's multiple people with brand new consoles?
This is NOT modding related, or a coincidence. It's too widespread.

I really think that we were all hood-winked when we started believing that firmware updates were for making our lives easier. The one new feature every three months isn't worth me risking my system.

Really makes those ugly ****ing icons all over the dashboard feel like they're worth it.

So you know THAT MANY people with new consoles that are turning them on to XBL for the VERY FIRST TIME TONITE and having their consoles bricked?

So, GAFFERS, how many people do you know turning on their 360s for the first time tonite? What, none? Does that mean Kabouter knows them ALL? I suggest he provides a source (in english) before he ends up taking a long vacation.

Sorry for posting news then, I don't have an English source for you. Aside from some forum posts like this one
But I'll stfu :).

I bought my Aussie 360 a fortnight ago, with a build date of August 2006.

Update worked fine.

I'm willing to back kabouter up on the post-update E71 issue being a significant call driver. Probably moreso when the weekend hits or when people boot up their consoles to try out Gears next Tuesday. Fun times ahead.

Seems a little unlikely this is only impacting folks who've coincidentally missed out on prior updates. White Man's point of contention's valid there, but I appreciate the speculation.

A little common sense would tell you this nonsense.

If the update was bricking new consoles en masse, they would have taken down the update a long time ago. It's not that difficult to do.

Why would a Dutch source be any less plausible than an English source? And you're threatening to ban him, an active and helpfull GAFfer, just because you can't read the source? Lame.

Oh and if you really need your English source; our techie guy is currently investigating the issue, I'll post his findings once he's done.

obviously all pirates lying about their experience.

microsoft would never release a dashboard update without extensive testing on many configurations

and 66 looks alot like 71

You know, have any of these people contacted support? I'm really interested in what support has to say about this issue.

Is it something that can fixed with firmware flashing?

Just got my replacement X360 back in the mail today. Booted it up. Installed the update -- there it was the mysterious E71 error.
Fraking got here too late to save it.
Now I get to return to sender.

Wow, then umm, i'm not connecting my 360 to the internet just yet if this does actually turn out to be true. However, I hope this is like all the other times where people are yelling "Dead Rising is killing 360's!" etc.. I hope...

Confirmed...

I just got the GF a brand new 360 Premium so we could both play PSU. Turned it on, updated, and BRICK. It was the GRAW / XBLA Unplugged Combo, purchased in MTL. the nice lady from XBox Customer Service said that they expect to issue a patch within 24 - 72 hours. If not, I'm supposed to call back with my reference number.

They said to return it to the store tomorrow, and to tell them NOT to re-sell it and why. So...that's just great. No tag-team PSU tonight.

It isn't bricking modded consoles, based on the hacking communities I checked out. Anecdotal evidence like these cases of new consoles bricking leads me to think it's just buggy.

Wow. So does anyone know if they pulled the update?

Edit: It's still up. I just updated. Surprised they are leaving it up though if they know it is causing problems.

Nope, I just heard that an updated Update was already out on the XBL servers by the time you posted this. :)

from Major Nelson:

http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/01/having-an-issue-with-the-fall-update.aspx

Having an issue with the Fall update ?

It turns out that there is a very small number of people are having issues with the Fall update that we rolled out a couple of days ago. I just spoke to the Dashboard team, and they are aware of it and working on an update that we will rolling out in a matter of hours, not days. If you already have the update and you are connected to Xbox Live and playing games etc., then you can continue on with your day. If you are having problems, call your local Xbox Support number (get your local number from Xbox.com) and theyÂ’ll get you taken care of. IÂ’ll update this post when the update is available, but as I saidÂ…if you are up and running now on LiveÂ…you donÂ’t have anything to worry about and this wonÂ’t affect you.

Edit: An updated version of the Fall Update is now available on Xbox Live which has elminated issues relating to new or refurbished consoles failing after applying the Fall Update. Users who have already applied the Fall Update and are seeing an error message should call their local Xbox Support telephone number. If you already have the update, you will not be prompted for another update.
The last update has to be...updated right after the update as well. Between this and the Uno pack (an Uno pack!) having to be pulled down and fixed right after release, Microsoft's QA isn't looking so hot right now.

And Kabouter is vindicated. :p

can you choose not to install these? or hold off installing them or does it auto update?

I know more than a few sys admins that will not apply windows updates from MS immediately just to see if there are any problems that come up.

Service packs are treated with almost total distrust and are held for months.

I can completely confirm this. I got a brand new 360 today, booted up fine once I turned it on. After I downloaded the update though, the system gave me error 71 at boot every time. Mine was also the GRAW holiday pack bought in Brampton, Ontario. The store I bought it from wouldn't replace it or refund it but offered to send it out to Microsoft for repairs for me, and then lent me their demo unit. I'm not too happy about that but at least I do have something to play after my $500 investment.

Yes, but you can't login to live unless you install them.

In regards to sys admins, yep, same thing we do at work. Not like a couple days it going to be a big deal, when the giant holes have to be left until "Patch Day".

Also, a big :lol to all the people in this thread blaming it on pirates and the like... No way in hell it could be microsoft's fault :lol

I just wanna state that I bought my 360 two days ago and it was Manufactured in

August 06'

The moment I had my 360 connected to my Router I connected to Live! and immediately downloaded the Fall Update. The update went without a hitch.

It seems like Microsoft may or may have not put some code in there to brick some consoles that have custom firmwares but its turning out to be like a buckshot blast :lol.

How do you find out the manufacturing date of the xbox?

Should be on the back (where the ports are located), opposite of the Serial Number.

It should straight up say Manufacture Date:
