Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity will launch digitally for PlayStation 4 via the PlayStation Store in North America on September 20 for $19.99, publisher XSEED Games announced.

Originally debuted on PC in Japan as an independent release, the PlayStation 4 version of the action RPG will support full 1080p native resolution running at 60 frames per second.

The Touhou Project, also known as Toho Project or Project Shrine Maiden, is a series of Japanese bullet hell shooter video games developed by the single-person Team Shanghai Alice. Team Shanghai Alice's sole member, ZUN, independently produces the games' graphics, music, and programming.

This particular game is an action adventure title, with a gameplay that resembles Ys Origin/Oath in Felghana and Croixleur Sigma.

If I understand correctly, ZUN allows other people to use the characters in their own games if they follow some simple guidelines. From what I understand, all the Touhou games on Playstation are fan games, allowed after ZUN made an agreement with Sony.

I saw the trailer for Scarlet Curiosity before it was announced for localization, and thought it looked absolutely fantastic. I'm really looking forward to this.

I suppose I'm obligated to try a mix of Touhou and Ys published by Xseed. I wonder how good it actually is though.

Its a doujin game so just dont go in with overly high expectations. General reception is fans seem to think its ok / enjoyable. Though various small issues exist which is expected due to being an indie title.

The official Touhou series is mainly shmups, but there are a few fighting games as well. This isn't an official game - it's one of many, many fangames.

The 14th official game (Double Dealing Character) is available worldwide from Playism, but they didn't even translate it, so I hesitate to call it a localization. Other than that, I believe this is the first Touhou game to be localized. (Though, again, it's not an official game.)

Actually not the first since Genso Rondo comes out before that 6th in NA, 9th in EU.

I'd be much more interested in this if XSEED was bringing over the original PC version, but apparently that was out of the question.

I'll probably pick this up on sale at some point. Don't care about Touhou but this looks closer to what I want from Ys than actual Ys games these days.

I'm just glad to see more Touhou games of any sort make the leap---if the long and winding road to the latest and greatest takes the likes of this, Hopefully the best of the Roguelikes one day, and no telling what else....so be it.

Huh so this ended up getting picked up by XSEED in the end huh?

<shakes fist at former PLAYISM compatriots>

;)

Definitely one of the highest quality games I have seen come out of Comiket. Very happy to see it getting a release overseas.

Any reviews on the game?

I decide to check gameplay video.... look ok, i guess. Look like a pretty standard action RPG with loot. The exploration look like a lot like Tokyo Jungle in some stage and other look like uninspired hack and slack.

The game is out now. Any impressions and reviews?

No, because Zun is a xenophobic dick.
The official Touhou manga and books have been translated into multiple Asian languages, and I'm sure he'd be fine if any Western publisher wants to translate them.

In a recent interview he happened to have answered questions about their localization. The interview can be found at DualShockers .com/2016/08/26/touhou-interview-creator-zun-talks-past-present-and-future-of-his-touhou-project/

And here's my summary about his view written for another forum:

=======

Indeed, while he has expressed most of these points before, this interview actually has ZUN laying out his entire logic in one place.

The crucial thing is to understand that ZUN, true to the doujin spirit, sees his doujin publications (the STG games) as entirely his own baby, created, and in an ideal world, put into the players' palms by his own hands. From that perspective, letting anyone else tinker with them, be it hired programmers or fan patchers, can feel like an invasion of privacy.

A corollary is that if the games need to be changed in any way, whether for patching or international localization, he would have to also handle it by himself. And this creates a deadlock, as he often has neither the motivation ("I want to make new things, not fix old ones!") nor the capabilities (new programming techniques or foreign language skills) for the tasks.

=======

So we are talking about an individual creator who cares deeply about ownership of his works here, not a corporation aimed at maximizing profit, which changes the terms of engagement. He is not actively attempting to convert you into a paying customer, and thus also has no moral obligation to go the extra mile to reach out to you. If you like him enough to pay him, you do; fine if you don't.
Any word wether or not if we are getting the official Touhou game (Hopeless Masquerade/Legend in Limbo) overseas?
With the PS4 version of Touhou 14.5 coming out this December, I think at present, there's a higher chance this version will be localized for the West than the official PC games.

I've been playing this for a little while today

The basic attack is pretty floaty, not all that satisfying. The secondary skills are pretty cool though

The environments look really nice in spots. It reminds me of what World Of Final Fantasy is going for at times (noticeably budget though)

Game doesn't seem very hard thus far. The bullet hell patterns are cool but the game is really forgiving with damage and health. Seems more aesthetic than actual patterns you need to think about

The brief visual novel-ish dialogue is whatever, no interest

As someone who knows nothing about Touhou and was just interested from the first screens when the Japanese version was revealed, I'm enjoying it. Nothing amazing so far but it's something different. Very one note gameplay yet sort of addicting. No idea how long the full game actually is but I can't imagine it being any more than 10 hours at most unless the recycling is insane (which would not surprise me)

Just played the game a little today and it's actually a nice game. Only problem I have with it is that the enemies tend to blend with the background and there is no signal pointing the out, either on the screen or on the map, which is awful and means you'll have to keep a really sharp eye to find them.
