GameInformer: Getting To Know The Tempest: Mass Effect's New Normandy

When you’re exploring the far reaches of space, it helps to have a home away from home. In the Mass Effect series, your ship serves a variety of purposes. It can be a military base, where you plot your next tactical move; it can be a clubhouse, where you hang out with companions and get to know them better; and it can be a command center, where you make decisions about your character’s progression.

In the Mass Effect trilogy, players had the Normandy, which became almost as iconic as Commander Shepard. In Mass Effect Andromeda, you have the Tempest, a ship that functions like the Normandy in some ways, but also stands out with its own distinguishing features and innovations. Since players will spend a lot of time aboard this vessel exploring its corridors and interacting with its crew, we’re taking a closer look at what you can expect from the Tempest and how it helps in your mission to find a new home in Andromeda.

Huh. I thought this Arc was our ship:

not this scout ship:

I guess the former will be Andromeda's Citadel.

A Salarian pilot, hmm. I have a hard time believing he'll be more fun and interesting than Joker.

The above ship is the Hyperion which is the Human Ark, The Tempest is our Normandy, and the Nexus which was sent ahead of the Arks is the Citadel of this game.

One thing that amazes me is the scale of the ships they sent out into space. The Tempest is barely a spec of dust compared to the Hyperion, and the Hyperion is a tiny ant compared to the Nexus. The manpower and resources needed to build the Nexus must have been massive. It even looks bigger than the Citadel.

Looking good. Don't love the design of the Tempest, but it's OK. Everything else sounds great though.

Interesting that the exterior design is so similar to the Normandy. Wiki says the Normandy was commissioned in 2183. Does anyone know what year the Andromeda initiative starts? Google-fu is failing me. I'm curious to know if the ship design for the Tempest makes sense from the timeline perspective.

According to the site, the Initiative launches in 2185, during the events of Mass Effect 2.

Supposedly the initiative was started long before ME1 but development escalated in the later years leading up to ME2 which is around when they depart for Andromeda.

The Nexus is tiny compared to the Citadel. Remember the size of Sovereign compared to the Presidium ring? And Sovereign was at least as big as an Ark.

I can see the Arks being Destiny Ascension size each, with the Nexus being 3-4 times that.

I mean, there's a size comparison up there; it's bigger than 3-4 times larger, but without a known scale for the Arks, it's tough to say exactly how big the thing is. I'm assuming that the Arks are larger than most Dreadnaughts, since they don't have to be combat-ready, but probably still no bigger than Sovereign, which was fuckhuege.

Maybe 1/3-1/4 the length of one of the Citadel arms.

Nothing about it strikes me as small, given that in the trailer we can clearly see Alliance ships floating near the Hyperion and they look insignificant next to it.

Then you have that comparison image earlier in this thread where the Hyperion Ark is dwarfed by the Nexus.

From the other thread:

Why are the using screenshots with such low resolution and tons of artifacts? Won't Bioware Marketing provide Game Informer with proper press material?

Yeah seriously, the material they gave for the coverage is not good. We have nothing but text, and AGAIN, a freaking concept art.
It's getting harder and harder to be hyped because of the amount of info dump in texts we had. I like what's in it, but I feel like no video or trailer will surprise me at this point, there's absolutely nothing that made me go "Holy shit !!" during the marketing campaign, and if they finally start to show interesting stuff, I'll be like "that's cool, but I've already read all about it."
I would have been so pumped to discover a salarian pilot in a trailer. Now, like the thousands of things we've learned about the game, it's just a footnote in a info dump.
I thought the GI coverage this month would be like going back to paper magazine to learn more about a game but even this falls short because in magazines you at least have good pictures, and here there are these crappy low res screenshots. What are you doing BioWare, how can it be so hard to hype people for Mass Effect ?

Except we also have no idea how big THOSE ships are. A lot of those could be shuttles, for all we know.

Bioware, pls giff scale.

Here's a better image, those are very clearly Alliance frigates/cruisers on the right, and I'd probably assume the Tempest is smaller than them.

But yes, a proper scale chart from BioWare would be neat.

Love that they're going for a seamless experience in zone transition. For a game like Mass Effect that should really add to the immersion. Also cool with the Tempest being a Normandy-lite. Smaller crew, tighter focus.

Super excited for this.

Be pretty disappointed if there is no galaxy map music like Uncharted Worlds, I used to love checking out all the planets and their bios listening to that track

Never considered a Salarian pilot before as a replacement for Joker but now that I think about it that could be really neat. Wonder if they'll double as a squadmate or if their role as pilot is too valuable to the plot for them to leave the helm.

Btw will this game be limited to one cluster only? Seeing as there are no Mass Relays how are they going to explore Andromeda? One cluster shouldn't have many livable or explorable planets. Either way quality over quantity.

As far as we know yes, the game is limited to a single cluster. I'm guessing this will in part be their reasoning to allow exploration across multiple systems in a galaxy devoid of mass relays. But we don't really have any basis to assume there won't be many explorable or livable planets in a cluster.

Space is a big place, more so than many realise. A single "cluster" often contains tens of thousands of individual stars.

At any rate, there's not enough info to draw any reliable conclusions about it, we'll just have to wait and see what they have planned.

Same, I also really liked checking out the different planets and reading their bios. No matter how insignificant the planets were. I hope that's still possible.

Salarian pilot, yes! I wonder why the pilot of a scout ship of the human ark Hyperion is Salarian though. And no loading screens!

And flying to the planet, landing there and getting out being as seemless as possible sounds great as well.

Can't wait to finally see more actual gameplay on the 1st.

The real question is whether it's going to have sick-ass variable-geometry space wings like the Normandy SR-1, which is the undisputed best Normandy, fite me irl if u disagree.
