It would probably never be seen as more than a conspiracy because it would never be fully revealed or released. We just aren't at a point where we, as a species, could handle that revelation.

Depends on if its so far away that we would never realistically ever face them - millions of years away (and ago) would mean they are probably long since dust - or if its something that is much, much closer and/or coming towards us.
Far away and it'd be exciting for a while but eventually would die out, just like our discovery of probable water on Mars.

I would not envy being an inter advanced species first contact envoy .... If they're aggressive we're fucked . If they're not I'm sure communication will present such a barrier at some point someone will get shot/bombed/nuked etc .... I would imagine for inter galactic/stellar super advanced species first contact teams have a high mortality rate .... Maybe once we upload our consciousness to a cloud or something I'd be okay with another species blowing me up so I can re download myself into a new body
