Knytt - a free, short but atmospheric little game

Reminds me of Seiklus and Cave Story. There's really no challenge but exploring is fun due to fun gameplay (wall jumping!) and great atmosphere thanks to art & music/ambience.

The Knytt was abducted by an alien! Traveling through space, the UFO flies into a meteor and crashes on a nearby planet. Luckily, the Knytt and the alien survive, but the UFO is a wreck. How can the Knytt possibly find it's way back home again?

Thanks, I'm downloading now. I like the idea that there's no challenge, just exploration. Let's see if it's good or not.

Haha that's genious I love it. My kind of game. It's what I would like to have created. Congrats to whoever did this. Lovely music/sounds too.

Hey this is actually pretty cool so far. I feel it's got a very relaxed approach to things and the music is incredible.

Great game. Reminds me of SOTC.

Looks awesome, I'm definitely gonna check this out. Great artwork, I especially like the black/white level, reminds me of old GB games...

Damn, Seiklus was a really good game, too. I've been a fan of cly5m's stuff since he first got his start making ZZT games. Very cool guy.

Is it difficult to make such a simple game with programs like gamemaker? Not in terms of graphics or music just gameplay.

Is it possible to play games like Knytt, Cave Story and that Within Deep Forset on a GB micro? That would amazing beyond words. That's like pure art showcasing, I'm delirious over this idea.

This game is utterly brilliant. The size of the world alone is breathtaking, and all the inhabitants going about their business, un-communicating.

This is really really great. Ah GAF, you do deliver me some treats!

Not very difficult at all. Knytt and Within a Deep Forset was made with Multimedia Fusion 2 and Seiklus was made with Game Maker.

Thanks for the answer dude.

Anyone know the answer to my other question about whether there's a way to play these games on a game boy micro or any portable for that matter?

I still can't get over that such marvelous art piecies are going around and nobody told me. How can gaf, no wait, the world not be frozen from the shock with these. It's like they are as good maybe better than my conventional favourites games ever. Very inspiring and inspired stuff. Both Knytt and Within a Deep Forest.

played it a lunch during my break, very cool little game.
It's titles like this that I hope get put on XNA to make the $99 per year pay off (and get new developers some needed limelight)

Imitation is flattery, natch..... but really....

Getting excited.

That looks interesting, thanks. This thread has gotten me excited about 2-d gaming, and I sort of... hated most 2d games up to today. Ok not hated, but found most of them dull .

Any other freeware recommendations?

I played and beat Knytt last night after seeing it on the SA forums. Wonderful atmosphere and overall ambience. Creates immersion the same way Team Ico does in their games, by subduing the 'game' elements to the point where all you think about are the atmosphere and gameplay.

Knytt reminds me of Another World. I love all those old 2D games - especially Monty on the Run and Jet Set Willy - when you can't wait to see what's on the next screen!

Utterly brilliant. Those "game maker" applications often really allow idiots to publish what they think are good "games", but they also allow some real artists to unleash their imagination...

The music's great although the pieces are a bit too short for my tastes. Nonetheless...this is a freeware game as good as it gets.

This is pretty good, so far.

Heaven forbid someone release a not very good free game that they probably made as a learning experience.

And as much as it seems like software named "Game Maker" would be something that only panders to people who expect game development to be easy in the slightest, it's actually one of the nicest 2D engines I've seen.

This game gives me the same feeling ICO does for some reason. I love it.

It has a lot to do with the sound and music direction. Nothing more atmospheric than parts of a game with absolutely no music but some great subtle sound effects when near machinery or running water etc

Great game, I just downloaded it and completed it in one run :) It's very easy, but for a free game the all-round quality is astounding.

lovely.
try out the funky shooters obviously, if you havent yet.

all freeware, from the same guy. just google them.

*specially recommended.

I love it, it's very relaxing to play as there doesn't seem to be any combat, just straight-up platforming and wall-climbing. Your character is extremely nimble, too, which is nice. Only really got 2 of the parts so far. And oh yeah the music is really nice. Everybody should give this a try and then go play seiklus - I always have to pimp a fellow ex-ZZTer cly5m's stuff.
