During the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Europe earlier today, Square Enix commented on a possible version of the game for Switch. It’s under “consideration”, the company said.

In August 2015, director and producer Naoki Yoshida stated that Square Enix was open to putting Final Fantasy XIV on Switch, when it was called NX. It sounds like things are slightly more concrete, though we still don’t have a confirmation of it actually happening.

Don't read too much into this, Final Fantasy XI was once announced for the PlayStation Vita at a proper conference and we all know how that turned out.

I've been playing XIV since launch and the idea that this is being considered is great for the potential to increase playerbase, but terrible considering they're finally ending PS3 support with the new expansion because of the bottleneck aspect, which would only return a little bit down the line if they had a Switch version.

Good news either way that they are considering it, even if it's not exactly a lock.

Given the Switch's architecture vs the PS3's, I imagine a port of that existing wouldn't cause nearly as much of a bottleneck as the PS3 version does.

I mean, it could feasibly happen. I'd prefer the mobile XI remake though. That game needs a loving home, and Nintendo would take good care of it.

Would be kinda cool, but there's no way in hell I'd replay this game again. Great game, but holy jesus one of the biggest timesinks I've ever did. Definitely would be neat for new players I guess.

Yep, there : Nintendo NX could get a port of FF XIV

Yoshida stated that Square Enix is waiting to hear when the console will actually launch before making anything official. The company also needs to find out what Nintendo's policy will be regarding cross-platform gameplay, something which will be important considering that the game already has a large userbase on PC. According to the developer, negotiations with Nintendo still have to be started.

I feel like there would be enough technical challenges that they would probably make an offshoot product before doing a port. The draw of a port is usually hitting a different market and being able to make a lower-investment product. The development challenge combined with a market just starting fresh take away some of that draw (at least for the near future).

Edit: Oh snap, XIV, not XV. That would be awesome, and the technical target is dead-on for the most part. They need to do that.

Not that Switch is comparable in power to a PS3, but with PS4 now being the baseline for console support, I doubt this will actually happen.

When they say it's under consideration, it probably means they're looking at how viable it is. It would be nice if it happens, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

I feel like I've heard this a dozen times already. Questionable leaks I guess.

Still more interested in XV, but I guess that's much less likely.

The Xbox One was considered for FF14 as well.

The Switch has no bluetooth so you can't even use a wireless keyboard and mouse on it.

I suppose it could work but considering they enhanced the hell out of the game after dropping PS3 support and the Switch isn't that much stronger than one I have no idea.

Please no. We are just getting rid of the PS3 version. No more underpowered consoles holding the game back any longer.

The game looked perfectly serviceable on mid/lower settings on PC. I doubt power would be the reason they didn't port it.

Now, trying to deal with an MMO UI on a small screen :-/ that sounds like a nightmare.

I'd check it out. I've never really given a MMO any time of day but the Switch's portability makes it a perfect candidate.

Now if we can just get Sega to get onboard with a Phantasy Star Online title we'll be in business.

What's the point if Sega doesn't bother to bring it overseas? The Vita has PSO2 that runs just fine with all expansions, a portable with a great MMO that's left in Japan.

3.25 is a chunk more than half of 5

It's still not going cut it for very long and holding a game back because of Switch which won't even be all that popular of a platform for the game is just a bad move to make.

Stick with PS4 as a base. PS3 hurt the game enough already.

Didn't they confirm you can use bluetooth headsets?

PS3 = 256 MB of RAM
Switch = 4GB of RAM

Switch won't hold the game back.

Pretty sure PS3 has 2 pools of 256 MB, so not quite.

bandwidth might be an issue even with capacity at the right levels, but at the same time the fact that switch an run a version of the game bodes well for a new audience opening up.

Its not unprecedented considering SE even supported FF14 on PS3 which was creaky as hell, but a handheld getting console ports is incredible
