Bethesda (Fallout/Elder Scrolls) hiring for online multiplayer experience for AAA

This one actually kind of surprised me.

Bethesda put up a bunch on online multiplayer related jobs at their main branch, so I thought they might have just expanded mobile development from Montreal to Maryland, but this one is pretty explicit.

They have previously said that they consider multiplayer at the start of every project, and that it was their most request feature along with dragons in The Elder Scrolls, but that it normally falls by the wayside.

That said, they are getting pretty close to doubling the size of the studio relative to when Fallout 4 shipped, so presumably they found room to handle this.

This is also interesting in that they were the last holdout among major traditional WRPG developers that wasn't adding multiplayer to their games, especially since CD Projekt is also doing so.

Guerrilla would be the main new entrant that doesn't currently have multiplayer in their WRPG or open multiplayer jobs for the next one.

But anyway, onto the jobs.

First, the one that's explicitly a console game job.

Bethesda's Destiny.

Hard to say. I suspect they won't have a non-mobile game prior to Fall 2018 at the earliest.

Hopefully it is 2018 XD. This is the next Elder Scroll game, right? I mean I don't think Bethesda is big enough to handle 2 AAA games.

They're supposedly making two AAA games that aren't Elder Scrolls (at different stages of development) and leaving TES6 for after that, since they have a design they feel won't work well on current consoles for TES6.

I doubt that it is elder scrolls related. Bethesda is working two new ips before they start on another elder scrolls.

Since when has that ever stopped them!

I could totally see Bethesda making a coop survival thing that's all the rage now like Ark and others that have blown up on steam. Seems like a logical step.

I've always liked BGS, but I think it would be good for them to take a break from the usual TES/FO games. Fallout 4 felt like a game from a developer going through a creative (and technological) rut. I very much enjoyed my time playing FO4, but it was missing something.

There was a rumor floating around, from here btw, that their next game was further along than we think it is. I agree Fall 2018 would be the earliest and I think that is the date they are shooting for. Also it's been floated around this is a sci-fi / space RPG.

Either way interested to see what happens with it. Bethesda multiplayer could be really fun

Didn't Howard say in an interview some weeks ago that TES:VI had started development?

His statement was more along the lines that they have an idea of what they want to do and some exploration into that, which would presumably be mandatory in order to know they don't have the tech ready to do what they want yet.

I'm always shocked there are people on GAF who don't know this. Like, they just assume: "Fallout released, so it's Elder Scrolls next, right?"

Anyway, as much as I'd love to see that so-called Bethesda space RPG this coming E3, its sounding like I won't.

Honestly, I'm okay if they wait on TES6.

I really want them to get their shit together technically, and re-evaluate how that series works from a game design perspective. I liked how Oblivion/Skyrim played for the most part, but I think most everyone can agree they're full of very bad design flaws that hamper the experience greatly once the veil is gone hiding the inner systems.

I love Oblivion to death but I'm not interested in going back to a game with those leveling mechanics, both for players and enemies.

This. Skipping an entire generation... I'll be an old man when the next TES comes out.

Last time they squeezed two elder scrolls games in one gen (admittedly last gen lasted longer than usual) it ended up being smaller than their previous game (or it at least felt like it to me and many others) in terms of raw content.

So I'll actually wait if it means we also don't get another Fallout 4 which is the only Bethesda game I couldn't finish.

I would be totally down if the next TES or Fallout had online co-op.

I still think they are crazy for not releasing TES VI sooner. I get they want to wait to make the best game possible instead of rushing it out and Skyrim is still making them a lot of money with the recent SE but it's such a widely popular IP now that it's just crazy to me they are skipping an entire generation.

The job postings frequently still ask for experience with the Gamebryo Engine Creation Kit (GECK), so presumably the existing one.

Damn that gives me little hope. I hate gamebryo I wish bethesda would drop it already.

i have a feeling they're doing one game that's essentially fallout/ES in a new skin and an off the wall kind of thing. i'm guessing MP is going to be in the latter

the type of games they make and their design philosophy combined with a brand new engine would probably lead to a worse experience, not better.

Yeah, but as it stands sure maybe the first or second game with that new engine might suck, but I'm sure they'd be able to overcome it.
