Sony Santa Monica's GoW team hiring multiplayer programmer (2nd game? Changed mind?)

So this one was also interesting because they explicitly said that God of War was singleplayer at E3, so they either changed their mind, or maybe have a second game in development?

They say it's the God of War team, and have recent sold off their indie support department to Annapurna, so while I guess it's possible this could be for an external project, that seems less likely.

Hm. If it is God of War, I'm really interested in how they'd tackle multiplayer this time. We don't know enough about the game to take a good stab at it.

idk maybe the Team behind GoW means a more broader advertising tactic

and instead it is just one of their side projects they usually do for the PSN store

but then again they did do MP for GoW ascension and it was pretty good

Sony Santa Monica regularly provides development assistance with indie games (Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Bound, Here They Lie, Fat Princess). It could just be for an indie game with a multiplayer mode.

SSM aren't just developers. They are aslo editors. They released Bound, The Order 1886, The Unfinished Swan and many more. What if this game is not made by them? Or maybe they will include MP for GOW after all.

i thought the multiplayer in Ascension was fantastic so I would personally love if we got something like that.

realistically, its not anything like that lol

Probably have a new IP in pre-production. If the new God of War had multiplayer I feel like we would know by now.

Also for everyone that doesn't know, Santa Monica's ex-dev division who helped with Journey, Unfinished Swan, Bound, Fat Princess, etc is gone. It was quietly shut down as they finished up their 2016 projects and most of the key people are with Annapurna Interactive now.

I don't think they do that as much anymore, do they? At least for indies, seems like they havent been producing or whatever as much as they used to. Some games have even left to different pubs

EDIT: Ah yes explained above

A lot of those people are at Annapurna now.

Annapurna is also now publishing a few formerly SSM indie projects like What remains of Ethan Finch and whatever that katamari guy was doing.

Gonna be interesting to see what future holds for SSM and indies. I knew a lot of that team left for Annapurna but this thread is the first time I heard it was sold off. When did that happen?

Since December at least. The Edith Finch trailer at PSX had Annapurna listed as the publisher. Here They Lie was the last XDEV game that Santa Monica helped with, and that came out in October 2016.

I don't think MP for GOW will hurt it at all especially if the game is great. Look how Uncharted still has MP and it is still working very well. With the new gameplay and camera perspective for GOW it may work very well and keep the game alive very long.

Huh, that's kinda big news (imo anyway)

Is there an article somewhere about this?

It is true that companies do outreach much more when they are not at the top... sad development :/.

This is probably for new IP in ore production, im almost certain GoW is still only confirmed as a long ass single player game only.

Imo SSM were trying to do way too much external support. I'd rather they focus on a few key, highly promising indie games for a few years instead of the kitchen sink approach they'd adopted lately (helping indies in any case is awesome though!).

This approach should help save costs and maybe result in more Journey-esque quality indie releases.

The multiplayer in Ascension was good so I trust them.
But, I don't necessarily think it's about the new GOW.

Yeah I enjoyed the MP too, so I can see it being decent if they add a MP mode but I think it could be for something else they are working on too.

I don't think we've gotten an update recent, but it was somewhere sround 200 last time they said something.

After the cancelled game, I think they all worked on this new God of War but now the game is finalized, they separated a team to develop a new game imo

I think the same.
I think God of War is already too far along to add in multiplayer at this point. Well, I mean, they could do it but it would add more significant time to development. A new IP would be more likely. God of War is more than strong enough to stand on its own as a single player title as well.

Would be interesting if they go the 2 teams route again so soon, unless this is something smaller scale

My guess is pre-production on their next game. Weather it's GOW or new IP I'm not sure yet

They better not add MP for this if it means they have to compromise on the development. I'm sure this is for something else. Please, please.

It think we'll find out details come E3. They've gone a whole year with nothing but that demo . It's time we got some info.

Starhawk/ warhawk reboot #believe. Otherwise I'm fine if they are just revisiting that cancelled destinyish ip.
Coudln't deal with another Hawk series game. Apparently, PS3 owners are flying ACES. Couldn't kill anybody in the latter half of Warhawk's life. Those same ppl migrated over to Starhawk, and the beatings continued. That ground combat, though. WHEW
