giveaway: Elliot Quest for PS4, XB1 and 3DS (NA) - a love letter to Zelda II

One of my favorite Wii U games just came out on PS4, XB1 and 3DS. The Steam version also has had an extensive update. To celebrate, I am giving away three copies of the game (NA region), one for each of these systems.

I'll pick winners in a few days. See "how to enter" below. First, some info about the game.

PREVIEW_SCREENSHOT1_147943.png

Here's the game description from the official site:

Elliot Quest is an adventure/RPG where players explore the mysterious Urele island in search of an ancient demon. With 5 dungeons to conquer, 16 bosses to defeat, and countless treasures to discover, Elliot Quest is inspired by Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and many other classy titles.

Elliot can't die—but he's still running out of time. In Elliot Quest, the victim of a rare curse must find a cure before he's transformed into a demon.

Here's what's new in this version (quoting PR):

On top of already being the best Mega Man + Metroid + Cave Story + Zelda inspired game, we've added special collectibles, multiple save slots, EFIGS localization, achievements and trophies, plus stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS!

Release dates for NA/EU: PS4 May 9th, 3DS May 11th, XB1 May 12th.

For more info, check out the Steam OT here and the Wii U OT here.

Ok, but while I have you here, I want to praise this game a bit.

Here's part of my GOTY thread write-up for the Wii U version:

Here's why this is such a terrific game. I've only played bits and pieces of Zelda II but if ever someone wanted to see how a Zelda game would work as a 2D sidescroller, Elliot Quest is their game. So, everything about this game is a wondrously emblematic of a lucid world brought to life. The character and enemy design is unique but has that unmistakable je ne sais quoi of the Zelda genre. Traversing the overhead map and side-scrolling main gameplay areas just feels great with so many hidden secrets and areas. The action is tight and thoughtful and responsive. The puzzles are bewitching but never frustrating. The music is delightful and memorably grand. The most important thing is game feel, though, and just playing EQ feels terrific. You become Elliot. This is what I want from a game. To be transported into a world, to be the character--to be the "Link" into their world, if you will. EQ offers and delivers this in spades. It's the best Zelda game Nintendo never published, and I can't recommend it heartily enough.

(Just be sure to get those patches if you get the Wii U version! It took a little time for them to perfect some bugs after release, it was like a game of whac-a-mole where they would fix one issue and another would pop up. They did iron those out pretty quickly, though.)

How to Enter

To enter, please tell me about a favorite under-appreciated game of yours on the system you're wanting the game for (PS4, XB1, 3DS). Please be sure to specify which system you want the game for.

I want some deets about why you liked it. And just to keep the entries varied and interesting, you will get greater consideration if it's not an oft-discussed game. This way we can each get some good game recommendations in here in addition to entering the giveaway. ☺

Please note: I don't have any affiliation with the publisher or developer. When I do giveaways, sometimes the copies are from me, and sometimes I've gotten them from the developer. I don't receive any compensation for this. I just like to give away games on GAF.

I'm a somewhat new PS4 owner so I haven't quite gotten to the point where I'm playing a lot of underappreciated games just yet, but I will say the DLC for The Evil Within doesn’t get the credit it deserves. The Assignment and the Consequence were both fun and really pushed the survival horror gameplay. But The Executioner where you play as The Keeper, one of the damn relentless bosses in the game. Its a complelty different playstyle and has a surprisingly touching story too.

*edit* and to be clear, entering for PS4.

Nice competition idea, OP.

I'd enter for 3DS, but alas, I am EU, so instead I'll rave about Kalimba for Xbone.

One of the cleverest puzzle platformers I've played, with a great sense of style and refreshing colour palette. The OST is understated but underrated. The sparingly used narration is dry and witty. If you like games that toy with multiple perspectives and simultaneous character movement like ibb & obb, I can't recommend it enough. Sad that the devs were shuttered by Microsoft.

God damn it, this was my one. Ey, am not NA anyway.

But yes. Kalimba is god-damned great.

I'll enter for PS4.

Underrated game: Mafia III.

Let me just get it out of the way: It's a terrible open world game. But there's some great fun to be had if you treat it like a linear game. Sure, it's a bit repetitive too, but if you ignore all the repetitive mission and focus on the main ones it's one solid game.

Listen to some late 60s tunes and racist drivel on the radio as you take part in a Tarantino-esque revenge game where you brutally murder all kinds of trash from the KKK to rednecks. With a bonus cameo from Nolan North, but you don't actually know it's Nolan North till the credits.

That's enough for a good time for me and deserves more than a 60 on metacritic.

I'm currently playing Oceanhorn on PS4. It's obviously heavily influenced by SNES and Gamecube era Zelda games. Once you get past the fact that it has nowhere near the budget of a real Zelda game, and a lot of corners had to be cut because of that, (for example, the sailing sections aren't free-roam. You pick a destination and get driven there automatically), it's a sweet little game. Puzzles were super obvious for the first half of the game, but now that I'm closing in on the finish, the complexity has increased and I'm finding the dungeons much more satisfying. There are even some cool Zelda-style bosses to figure out.
Icing on the cake is music by Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame.

Crimson Shroud - 3DS

I like Matsuno games. I'm not a hardcore RPG player, but I like the way Matsuno writes and designs games, and certainly I don't mind a bite-sized adventure for the asking price (7 usd if I recall correctly). Even if you aren't familiar with his previous works, if you like classic-type RPGs, you can definitely jump in and enjoy it. If we're talking about underrated games that don't have too much discussion, I think CS certainly fits that mold.

Oh yeah, I remember you recommending me this game a few months ago, OP. Bought it on Wii U and it was definitely a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.

I'm not entering the competition since I already own it but an underrated 3DS game that I love is Shinobi. A fantastic reboot of the series that I expected nothing from since it was not developed by Sega but by a western studio specialized in licensed games (Griptonite I believe). Well, it might not be Super Shinobi but I stil absolutely loved it thanks to its soundtrack, awesome style and cutscenes and incredibly tight and difficult gameplay.

Edit: Crimson Shroud is great!

Putting this in for a ps4 copy

Just for the sake of argument as far as what I feel is underappreciated or didn't get noticed as much I'd go with the escapists.

It acts as a puzzle game in a relative sense. Obviously managing your characters levels etc fall into this along with the prisons themselves. Each prison offers a different type if challenge and pushed you to enact whatever knowledge you would attain from the prior levels.

Where it turned the corner and became particularly special to me was with the extra sense of humor put into the dlc. You had the Xmas levels which were fun and the duct tapes dlc which added a sense of nostalgia along with its humor.

With all of this out together it equals out to a simple but smartly done puzzle game.

Thanks for doing a giveaway.

One game I really loved recently is Apotheon for PS4.

It's a Metroidvania game with an ancient Greek theme.

Got it free from PS+ ages ago, but never got around to playing it until recently. It's really friggin' good! The various interconnected worlds are varied and interesting, there are quests you can undertake, it has a great soundtrack, and even a decent sense of humor.

Highly recommended.

Great idea, OP! As for my pick for an underappreciated 3DS game, I'd have to say SteamWorld Heist.

SteamWorld-Heist-Screenshot-Nintendo-3DS-Scrapper-Gang.jpg

It may have the Metascore it deserves, but I'd say not nearly enough people have played this amazing strategy game with a steampunk-robot theme. The combat (with the turn-based "laser-sight shooting" you can see above) is great, challenging, and varied enough to give you an incredible amount of freedom in choosing how to complete a mission. The plot is good, and the art is amazing - and only looks better popping out at you in 3D. The music is done by famous "steampunk band" Steam Powered Giraffe. Oh, and you can get hats in this game. You shoot off enemies' hats, and then you take their hats. That's why people still play TF2, right?

In for PS4

An underrated game, at least in terms of sales, is Tearaway Unfolded. This was such a charming game that constantly had me grinning. It was a little janky at times, specifically trying to draw on the touch pad, but it so many innovative and creative things with the hardware I still really enjoyed my time with it.

Thanks for the giveaway!

Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus (PS4... Also available on WiiU and PC IIRC!)
2908245-unnamed.jpg

This game took me by surprise last year as I love "Metroidvanias" and Zelda2 inspired games. This one hits all the right notes with its beautiful pixel art reminiscent of the best looking 16-32bits titles, superb animations, varied environments, great music and ambiences, great level design and a well done "learn by playing" approach. There's no tutorial, no arrow to follow, no NPC telling you what to do. Controls are responsive, intuitive and just feel right overall, a must if you guys are into the genre.

If I'm lucky enough to win, PS4 version pleeease. =)

The little-known PS4 game I'd like to discuss which isn't often talked about here is called "The Last of Us." It's by an inexperienced developer, Naughty Dog, and the game I'd really like to discuss is actually not that at all obviously and it's "10 Second Ninja X."

It was on PlayStation Plus last month and so half the people in this thread have probably ignored it despite owning the bloody thing.

As a gamer, I have two favourite genres. These are puzzle games, and 2D platformers, and somehow 10 Second Ninja X manages to be amazing at both in, well, ten seconds. The jist is that you have to kill a certain bunch of enemies in a small level, but you only have ten seconds to do it. At your disposal you have a melee attack and a ranged shuriken attack (which you can only use three times) so your job is to plan a route through the level in order to take out all the enemies in just ten seconds.

Often it's not hard, but of course you'll only get one star for doing it slowly, and the real puzzle starts when you're trying to earn three stars which can mean you need to do the whole shebang in two seconds. It's amazing, both planning the route, trying and failing and shaving the milliseconds off with a slightly more perfect run, or a slightly more perfect route.

The thing has a sense of humour too, and is totally recommended. One of those games I paid for and don't regret at all even though it's been free on Plus now.

25409554616_68992ac869_b.jpg

As I say, half the people in this thread already own it so go and bloody play it. Don't write it off because of its simple looks!

^^^^^10 Second Ninja is amazing, gotta finish it up!

I'm in for Xbone, my underappreciated game is Quest of Dungeons. It was the first turn based roguelike I played on console (but I do played a lot of them on Pc), and I loved they made the UI work so well. The game itself is very good, and has a homage to Crypt of the Necrodancer, which is another similar game that recently got released on Xbone too.

My game would be Kings Quest for the PS4.
kings-quest-chapter-one-listing-thumb-01-ps4-ps3-us-23jun15

It's a brilliant episodic tale taken straight from yesteryear when point-and-click adventures ruled the land. I've always had a soft spot for these types of games from Monkey Island, Police Quest, Maniac Mansion, Grim Fandango...the list goes on and on. Heck, Lucasarts thrived off these games in the 90s.

The story is brilliant, and the voice acting superb led by the fantastic Christopher Lloyd. It has Easter eggs aplenty, including one to our favorite Lad in Hyrule in episode 2:
Kings-Quest-episode-2-preview.jpg

The story is very sweet, especially if you're a parent when it comes to episodes 4 & 5. It deals with some important issues including family, honor, and death. Bring some tissues!

Yes, some of the solutions are out of left field, but it will challenge you in a way that few games do these days. There's no open world to explore, collectibles to find. Just good old fashioned "hm, what do I do with this?" gameplay and packed with humor (especially puns, Graham loves puns!)

It's a fantastic game and will clock in around 20-25 hours for all 5 episodes. I can't recommend it enough!

Let's talk about Pocket Card Jockey for 3DS. It is a game that involves horse racing and solitaire, two things that shouldn't work well together and yet they do. I'll quote what I wrote in a thread about games from 2016 we shouldn't miss:

For just $7, you get a solitaire/ horse racing hybrid with a completely insane story, a great soundtrack and incredibly addictive gameplay. This game is fantastic, you can breed a robot horse, and it even has a great demo that takes you through your first horse, and you can transfer your progress to the main game.

For real, there are some excellent tunes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFqotzItgzw&index=21&list=PL47vq3g0IDNI1_A1PG9I0u5hUEVXzauJv

The story sometimes gets dark and mature too, for those worried it might be too kiddy:

Gotta Protectors - 3DS
cover_large.jpg

If you were like me, an intrepid explorer of Xbox Live Indie Games, you might have come across a game called Protect Me Knight. It was developed by Ancient, whom you may also know as the team members behind Streets of Rage 2 and Beyond Oasis. A 4-player hack n' slash with a fantastic 8-bit aesthetic(with Yuzo Koshiro doing the soundtrack), I had a blast with friends 'Defeat[ing] F***in' Goblins!" by the hundreds a la Dynasty Warriors.

The basic gameplay is like this: You have a princess and castle in the middle of the stage. You and up to 3 character class archetypes go around beating the crap out of any monsters before they get close to the princess. If the princess dies, it's Game Over. You gain experience and loot to upgrade yourselves and the castle's defenses, adding a Tower Defense element to it. Later levels ratchet up the number of enemies and your team must coordinate on the fly to focus their attacks and move the princess to safety(who thankfully stays in place).

Ancient released a sequel on the 3DS eShop last year, Gotta Protectors, which not only preserves the fun chaos and aesthetics, but exponentially expands on it.
Extra characters(An old knight on a toy horse, among others), hundreds of levels, a crafting & upgrade system, and a hilarious script localized by 8-4(Fire Emblem Awakening) and a level editor with QR code support. It even features one of the best sing-along theme songs since Portal. Best of all, it features Download Play, allowing players to get a good chunk of the action.
Not since Shovel Knight have I seen a 'retraux' game that so successfully captures the 8-bit look and feel, right down to the art style and digitized voices(that don't sound grating!). On the bottom screen, you have a simulated instruction booklet that gets virtual coffee stains upon further use. This level of dedication/parody even extends to the website. In a world where nostalgia-bait games are a dime a dozen, Gotta Protectors is among the best at emulating and expanding on it.
There's even substantial DLC for it, featuring PC-98 covers of all the game music.

This is a seriously underrated title that would be a blast at get-togethers and groups of 3DS owners.

EDIT: Added more fitting image to the top.

Platform of Choice: PS4

Recommendation: Natural Doctrine (available on PS3, PS4 and Vita)

Natural Doctrine is, to me, one of the most underrated SRPGs currently available partially due to it's own faults. It's one ugly game, the story is bare bones, it had very little in terms of marketing and this is a very, very difficult game with very little explanation on how to use it's mechanics before the AI crushes you.

For everyone that persevered the initial shock that makes even Demon's Souls feel like a Kirby game, the mechanics in this creates one of the most deep strategy games available on the current generation.

Explaining each mechanic would make this text far too long (and confusing) but the core mechanic of Natural Doctrine is that one character action can give another unit a new action. For example:

Character A defends
Character B and C get a new action
Character B attacks. Character D gets a new action
Character C buffs Character D
Character D uses magic and Character F gets a new action
Character F heals

This above is a single turn of character A. Which, in game, can look like this:

2664667-naturaldoctrine1.jpg

Since your enemies can also use the same mechanics, you must be on alert for all possibilities when planning your next move for each character. The attacks are on a full 3D plane so you can use cover in some levels to protect your characters or use a shield from another character. Never leave someone undefended or without cover if you want everyone leaving the stage alive (any character death is a game over).

This isn't a game for everyone, especially for those that lack in terms of patience. Battles can take a long while, some of your characters can die by unseen consequences of the enemies turn leading to a game over and frustration.

However, once you master it's mechanics, you start developing more and more complicated strategies that can absolutely destroy most enemies inside a level. The game is absolutely difficult, but never unfair (except for the last boss. Damn, that one) so conquering it's challenges gives a great feeling of accomplishment that few games can manage.

Unfortunately the game never got too many attention and I have seen very few people that actually managed to beat it. The game also has an online mode where, in theory, you could play against your friends and other people. I imagine that the online mode now is either desert or with very little people currently playing.

TL;DR: A great SRPG if you can learn it's mechanics. It's a difficult game, but also a rewarding one.

3DS.

Under appreciated gem will be crimson shroud.
It a Matsuno game that most did not play because it's a 3DS Eshop only game in the west. Short and sweet but with a lot of depth. Interesting turn based combat that is unlike traditional JRPG. Intriguing story and build and provide insight to a whole world and lore and ideas within the short time span of the game. The new game plus also provide more story details and an alternate endings.

Edit

Happy to see others who recommended this too!

My favourite under appreciated game on the PS4 is Saints Row IV Re-elected.

People slam this version (as well as the Xbone version) because they deem it to be a flawed upport of a last gen game. The PS4 game flunctuates from 60 to 30fps I think but usually averages out at 45fps most of the game.

I don't have a modern PC so I can't enjoy this in it's optimal form. I absolutely loved SR The Third last gen and missed out on part four for many reasons (one of them was that the PS3 version was poorly done compared to how well made part 3 was). SRIV is a great game in its own right but has its detractors for a multitude of reasons.

But for me it stands out as one of the more fun and enjoyable sandbox games out there. Part 3 and especially Part 4 are why Volition is now one of my favorite developers ever.

It's also nice that the PS4 version I got had all the DLC in addition to the standalone expansion which I haven't been able to play yet.

Really it's under appreciated because the port could have been better. But maybe the game can hit 60fps on a PS4 pro? I don't have a pro to try it on boost mode, and digital foundry always ignores my suggestion for a pro test for it. But whatever it's not important.

I'd like to enter for the Xbox One version please.

My favorite, under-appreciated game on XB1 (also on other platforms) is:

header.jpg

First of all, the atmosphere is incredible. I scare easily, so I don't really like 'scary' games, but this game gives you just enough of that lonely feeling putting you somewhat on edge. I love space, so I feel this game nails the 'alone in space, unknown territory' vibe.

Secondly, they give you just enough story where you are curious and want to know more, but not too much as to bombard you. The entire time I found myself trying to guess what was going on, what things mean, trying to predict the ending, etc.

But both of those points take a back seat to the gameplay. It's dual joke stick movement as a sidescroller, you shoot out clones/duplicates of yourself and 'swap' places with them to solve puzzles. The puzzles ranges from easy all the way to head-bangingly complex, but many of them feel like there are multiple solutions. Some require pinpoint timing, while others need specific execution in a perfect order. Every time I tried to put the game down, I would get the "just one more puzzle" vibe in same way as a game like Portal. Super rewarding.

Additionally the game isn't too long as to overstay it's welcome.

If you like puzzles, if you like space, if you like side scrollers, if you liked games like Portal, you will love this game. PLAY IT!

PS - Also, the ending is rewarding. Great payoff, zero disappointments.

You want to talk about an under appreciated game? Steel Diver on 3DS. Not sub wars, the original. I am one of the few people who bought it at launch, at full price, and absolutely loved it. I could see the arguments as to why it wouldn't be "worth" full price, but I am convinced the majority of people who said that either didn't play it at all or didn't give it a chance. It was a unique game with interesting control, awesome 3d, and just a lot of fun to control. Getting your settings just perfect and cruising through a level is just great.

Ohhh snap I would love a PS4 copy. You're cool.

My favorite under appreciated game is Breakdown for the original XBox. It did first person melee combat before it was cool. I'd kill for a remaster.

For PS4: Valiant Hearts: The Great War

It's a fictional take on a historical battle which features lovely side scrolling 2D graphics and a charming cast of characters. The gameplay is a bit simplistic and more puzzle-based, but the draw is the somber story about the horrors of war and the inspirational friendships. It features some stealth sections and driving/chase sequences to classic songs. It was free on PS+, and it's frequently on sale.

What's also cool are the collectables that give real information about real events concerning the World War. So it's entertaining and educational! :)

Very generous of you to do a giveaway! My selection for an underappreciated game is found on the Xbox One. Specifically, Tembo the Badass Elephant.

tembo-e1435926282801.jpg

Combining elements from Donkey Kong Country and Wario Land, Tembo smashes his way through several unique levels in an attempt to find peanuts and remove the army of Phantoms.

tembo-the-badass-elephant-gameplay.jpg

Tembo has a lot of weight to him, so you literally go crashing through buildings and other obstacles like a madman - or badass elephant, rather. I personally poured so many hours into this to complete it 100%, and I find it sad that so many people have ignored this silly little platformer.

tembo-the-badass-elephant-0311-09-300x250@2x.jpg

So that's my choice, Tembo the Badass Elephant. Hopefully this can convince others to at least gain a mild interest.

Platform: PS4

Also OP I read that the Wii U version was missing things graphically over the PC version (even after all the updates apparently). Hopefully these new versions fix that.

Underrated game on the 3DS:
Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale
A traditional RPG with farming elements and a charming/straightforward story. It flew under the radar, and I'm so glad XSeed took a chance and localized it. I really hope they broke even on it.

My console of choice is the PS4. An underrappreicated game is Tricky Towers on the PS4. I feel it's one of the best puzzle games in come in a long time. It's addicting both on your own and multiplayer. I've played it with my wife for hours and hours on end.

Thanks for the info about this game. I've heard of it but never knew much about it. Is it more platforming or more fighting enemies?

No sword/shield mechanic? That's one of the things Zelda II is best known for.

But a very generous offer OP.

So there's this little game called Persona 5 that came out not too long ago on PS4.....

...nah, real answer is a shmup on the PS4 (my system of choice if I win) (& on Steam, it seems) called Caladrius Blaze.

header.jpg

It took a while for it to come here (especially on PS4) & I waited for it to go on sale since it's normally $30 ($15 felt like a much better deal), but as a shmup fan, I rather liked it. It includes the 2 additional characters that were DLC from the X360 & PS3 versions, new modes, characters, enemies, & stages. You can choose between 8 characters, all of which have 3 unique attacks that can be leveled up throughout the game, not to mention once you beat the game with them, you can customize a character to be even more unique to have attacks from other characters. This makes for some great variety in how you play the game & ensure when you select a different character, it'll offer up a different experience & change up how you go through each stage & how you should distribute your level up chips for each of the 3 attacks.

It's not the hardest (though I was usually playing on Normal or Easy), but that also makes it one of the more accessible bullet hell games since there's a good amount of variety to help you find the one character or customization that best suits your playing style.

Also, the character design was done by Suzuhito Yasuda, who also did the designs for SMT Devil Survivor, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, & some of the artwork for the anime series Durarara. The developers are the guys who made Raiden 3, 4, & 5, along with KoF: Sky Stage & Neo Geo Heroes: Ultimate Shooting, so these guys have had some experience with shmups.

If there's one nitpick, it's that I'm sure some people won't be a fan of the fact that if you're fast enough in beating the bosses (or if you take damage yourself), there's clothing damage & while it's nothing super explicit, it's pretty much the reason the game got rated T due to "partial nudity".

Thanks for the info about this game. I've heard of it but never knew much about it. Is it more platforming or more fighting enemies?
As I mentioned, it is very similar to DKC, so platforming is at the forefront here. However, ramming into the enemies with Tembo's big body never gets old. There are a few bosses, as well. But exploring the stages is what the game is all about.

Awesome, it sounds like a lot of fun. I'll check it out on XB1. Thanks!

I can vouch for Tembo, which just has a fun name to say out loud (THE BADASS ELEPHANT!), & if you're patient, Sega will put it on sale for about 50%-70% off. I think I nabbed it when they made it around $5, a rather decent deal.

Thanks for the head's-up. I will be sure to pick it up on sale. In the meantime, I'll try to choose winners for the giveaway later today (people can feel free to still enter in the meantime).

The Last Remnant PC and Xbox 360, that game didn't really get that many good reviews website but it was well received on Steam, review wise.

I probably played this game over 100 hours and I really like the aspect of controlling army in a JRPG. The combat system was pretty unique and trying to spawn rare monsters was really nice. It was also fun to try to get every achievements in that game. The missable final boss was pretty challenging, I remember that I won against him very narrowly and I was pretty happy.

Would like an Xbox One copy if I win. Thanks for doing the giveaway!

I didn't forget you guys. I'll try to find time to pick winners today and get the codes out. Just been unexpectedly swamped at work.

Edit:

Ok, here are the winners. Thanks all for participating!

PS4: Oneself
XB1: flkraven

AWESOME! I will get started on this tonight!

Xbox ones, RECORE. The vibrant sandy dune setting, the platforming reminiscent of great platformers prior, and some fun shooting and tug of war dynamics in finishing off enemies and getting their cores! It was just a lovely game that feels like it never got the finishing touches or final finish production it needed. Yet still had a soft spot in my heart. The cast, the robot, good times. I even picked up the CE edition months later for the wicked statue.
