This is a job listing for a programmer for Game Freak. It says the main title they will work on is an RPG for 3DS. Speculation: So the next Pokemon will at least be on both 3DS and Switch? If not 3DS exclusive. This could be a non-Pokemon RPG but Game Freak haven't made one (at least not any time recently).

The 3DS came out in 2011, Game Freak released Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 for DS in 2012

Maybe? Game Freak's non-Pokemon ventures are rarely inside the same genre and almost all of them are original IPs.

Their previous job listing specified a 'world-famous' (maybe not in those exact terms) RPG as well which was way more clearly about Pokemon.

That first sentence lends credence to this being Pokemon but the second one doesn't... Maybe it's not Pokemon, but regardless they are hiring for some sort of 3DS RPG.

Unless they are just patching a hole that opened up during Dev it seems unlikely that it's both Pokemon and coming out this year. You don't usually hire your programmers 6 months before ship for games the size of Pokemon.

Not shocking. I mean beyond Game Freak being slow on this sort of thing in general, we already know Nintendo as a whole was overly cautious with the Switch, and furthermore Pokemon is certainly a good candidate for cross gen.

Friendly reminder that Gen 3 didn't come out until 2 years after the GBA launched, Gen 4 until 2 years after the DS launch, and Gen 6 until 2 years after the 3DS launch.

I wouldn't count on Switch exclusive Pokemon games for a while.

Not that, admittedly, Game Freak's assorted silly nonsense is necessarily what Nintendo wants them to do - case in point BW2's "timely" release. Still frustrating to have to hold onto an antiquated system instead of getting new games for the new one, though.

It was obvious the moment they revealed the N2DSXL, it's not going anywhere. Switch failed to meet expectations and if you were looking forward to Pokeymans, well... You got the wrong console.
See you in 5 years fellow Switch owners, maybe then they'll give us scraps of the franchise with Ultra Pokey Tournament.

(I'm only interested in the traditional RPGs)
