United Kingdom of Nintendo confirmed (500,000 DS sold in one month in THE UK ALONE)

15th January 2007 – Nintendo’s Wii and DS games consoles topped the must-have gifts chart this Christmas, with thousands flying off the shelves across Europe at an amazing rate throughout the festive period.

Record-breaking numbers of Nintendo DS and Wii consoles sold out as quickly as they could be restocked, proving that Europeans are embracing Nintendo’s revolutionary new take on gaming.

In the UK, independent sales figures released by Chart Track confirm Nintendo’s Wii and DS games consoles topped the must-have gifts this Christmas, in total almost 200,000 Wii consoles were sold in the UK over the Christmas period. Nintendo DS further cemented its status as the market leading hardware format in the UK for 2006. The total number of Nintendo DS units sold in the UK in December topped 500,000 making it not only the best selling console of any kind in the UK this Christmas - but the best selling console of any kind in 2006.*

In Europe, Nintendo’s consoles have been going from strength to strength over the last few months with the Nintendo DS and Wii accounting for over half of all European video game hardware sales in December.

Two years after its launch Nintendo’s dual-screened handheld console, the Nintendo DS is leading the console market in Europe. Nintendo DS enjoyed a record breaking Christmas experiencing its highest ever monthly sales since its launch in March 2005; 1.7 million units were sold across Europe during December making it the best selling games console in Europe across all formats, both in December and 2006, by a substantial margin.

Wii also took Europe by storm when it launched on 8th December 2006 and became the fastest selling games console in European history after its first weekend. In a matter of days Wii was totally sold out across the continent. Since launch Nintendo has been continually shipping more stock to retail outlets to meet unprecedented demand from both gamers and non-gamers alike. Despite selling out faster than it could be restocked, over 700,000 Wii consoles were snapped up across Europe in December 2006.

Wii software has performed equally well with more than 500,000 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sold in December, meaning that over 70% of Wii owners purchased this game. Wii Play has seen similar success with 320,000 copies sold to date, accounting for 45% of all Wii owners and showing that playing together was a priority for over half of Wii gamers thanks to the Wii Remote bundled with the game.

Laurent Fischer, Marketing Director for Nintendo of Europe commented:

"We have enjoyed one of the most successful Christmas holidays ever, with both Nintendo DS and Wii selling at staggering rates. The success of our products this Christmas clearly shows that Nintendo’s drive to make gaming accessible to everyone has attracted people of all ages and abilities to the industry. We are facing such high demand for both platforms that unfortunately we are facing stock shortages; however we are doing everything possible to combat this by attempting to deliver both consoles and games to retailers on a daily basis."

Last week, Nintendo increased its projected worldwide financial performance for the year ending on March 31 to be the best in company history.

Wii launched across Europe on 8th December 2006 and retails at an estimated retail price of €250 (£179 UK) with Wii Sports. Nintendo DS and DS Lite are available across Europe at an estimated retail price of €130 - €150 (£89 - £99 UK).

JESUS H CHRIST!!!!!
DS Europe market is the biggest it would seem at the moment
Also doesn't this put Zelda in excess of 2million?

Pretty unsurprisingly really, for the past month or so, i havent seen a DSL system in the shops around my area at all. Only second hand DS phat systems are still there i think

Well done Nintendo :)

Eh, Nintendo portables have always sold well over here, I'm far more interested throughout the year if Nintendo can keep positive momentum with the Wii.

No they haven't!
GBA sales i believe were crap over here always have been.
1.7m DS in Europe is it's biggest month anywhere i think?

What was the Gamecube installed base in the UK?

I wonder how they managed to reach these sales in Europe, with virtually no Wii/DS available in french stores in December?!?

hmm, as a PAL gamer, i've been a bit reluctant at buying a Wii (it took a lot of restraint), because of the poor performance of the Gamecube. Maybe, just maybe with all this positive news that they might of changed the perception of the console. It seems they have just done everything right, especially the Wii Play bundle with controller.
Fantastic numbers for them, i'm actually glad to see it.

Yay, Im writing this through the Wii interface and its not as bad as I thought :]

Ahem, yeah UK belongs to Nintendo, woopee ;)

I wish Chart Track data was leaked more often. It's a pity that our most reliable numbers for the relative size of the European market come from one-every-quarter-or-so random press releases.

So we should now be able to say how many units DS sold in December: 1.7 in Europe + 1.6 in NA +??? in Japan?

Japan (acc. to Media-Create):

Nov. 27 - Dec. 3: 350.358
Dec. 4 - Dec. 10: 309.630
Dec. 11 - Dec. 17: 319.708
Dec. 18 - Dec. 24: 485.584
Dec. 25 - Dec. 31: 176.219

That is, if about half of the first weeks sales was done in december = 1,466,320

Which adds up to a total for EU, US and JAPAN at = 4,766,320. Together with approximates and Australia + New Zealand, I'd say a massive 5 millions DSs sold during december worldwide (according to Media-Create, NPD and Chart Track)

DS/Lite did 1,3M for the 4 last weeks of 2006 (4->31), 1,47M in 5 weeks (11/27 -> 12/31).

Zelda is currently doing more than 2,2M worldwide, GCN & Wii versions together.

wow!

this puts ds higher than i thought for 2006. nintendo uk announced they'd sold 2 million units by nov 12th, so with 500k sold in dec alone, it would put total sales ~2.7 million, meaning nintendo hit their ambitious target, with 2006 sales at ~1.7 million.

seeing ds as the biggest selling platform for 2006 is amazing, and more surprisingly suggests ps2's decline in the uk is faster than expected.

other nintendo handhelds have sold well, but nothing like this. nintendo's presence as a publisher in the uk for sw units sold has risen from less than 3.2% and not being in the top 10, to 5.6% and being in 4th position, pretty much solely due to the ds, which is really impressive!
TOP UK GAMES PUBLISHERS 2006: UNITS

1. Electronic Arts 18.0%
2. THQ 8.3%
3. Ubisoft 7.3%
4. Nintendo 5.6%
5. Take 2 5.4%
6. Sony 5.4%
7. Activision 4.9%
8. Sega 4.3%
9. Microsoft 3.7%
10. Vivendi 3.7%

edit - also, really good wii sales. nintendo shipped more units than i thought they could after seeing npd's data, and noa's press release. makes you wonder what's going on there even more. zelda sold very well, which is great to see, so its ltd will be over 2.5 million including the gc version, maybe even 3 million!

It's popular here in Britain, I had mates buying one with brain training for their parents. I've seen shelves in shops for DS and PSP games have been empty, handhelds are selling like hotcakes.

I saw a lady buying Wii games the other day as well, least it proves one wii has been available in Glasgow since launch.

Despite selling out faster than it could be restocked, over 700,000 Wii consoles were snapped up across Europe in December 2006.

So there were more Wii's for December in Europe than there were in the U.S.?

Holy ****ing crap.
Wii and DS sales are amazing. Also Zelda sales are at more than 2.5m worldwide now which is massive. According to these figures, pretty much confirmed that it outsold Gears of War last year. :D

So, we now have a worldwide set of sales to go by for the next gen systems as of ~12/31/2006. NOTE: Doesn't include Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, Eastern Europe, Korea, or a number of other regions. We have no good number for Xbox 360 in Europe, so this is based off of sales tidbits throughout the year, plus the reported 360 sales in the UK, a region which is reported to have higher than European norm numbers for 360 sales.

Again, these are just rough numbers for our internal discussion. I'm not trying to make any proclamation of what's officially sold out there so feel free to offer your own estimates.

Wii
------------
Japan 920k
US 1.1M
Europe 700k
Australia 50k
Others ??
Total 2.77M

Xbox 360
-----------------
Japan 265k
US 4.5M
Europe ~2.75M (estimate)
Australia 100k+ (as of end of October)
Others ??
Total 7.7M (again Estimated)

Playstation 3
-------------------------
Japan 457k
US 687k
Europe 0
Others ??
Total 1.1M

Yes it has been a silent bomb in europe. Like you don't hear about it in the press so much. And there hasn't been Nintendo blowing their horn at all. They are being very modest at the moment. But every GAME store has a hand written notice DS SOLD OUT. I have also seen this in Virgin Megastores, HMV's, GAME's, Curry's Digital, etc etc around London. And now I am back at university in Canterbury, the signs are here too, in all the high street shops.

@sonycowboy
Don't you think your European numbers for the X360 are a little bit too high? There were 1.7 shipped until the end of September and the first one sold 1.4 million its first year. It is doubtable that it sold one million in November/December imo.

2.75m is way too high for 360 in Europe. It sold 890k in the UK, a country which usually has more than 40% of European Xbox sales.
We know Xbox sales in the UK were more than 2.3m units (ELSPA report) and its sales in Europe were more than 5.5m units (various sources), it means UK was accounted for more than 40% of European Xbox sales.

I'm guessing 2.25m in Europe is more close to reality, based on 890k sales in the UK.

you're low balling ps3 in the us. it sold 490k in dec alone, 2006 total is ~700k.

worldwide by the end of 2006, i think:

360 ~8 million
wii ~3 million
ps3 ~1.3 million

yeah, you did well!

didn't realise about the original xbox's stats, i was figuring on the uk being around 1/3 of europe for 360. i've altered my estimates accordingly ;)

your figures do make sense though. looking through the european charts 360 sw sells well in the uk, but hasn't has as good chart positions in the rest of europe.

My sources tell me that it was white for Wii :D

Question @ Sonycowboy: why do you say that your estimates don't include Eastern Europe? The Wii number from NoE has to include Eastern Europe, otherwise Nintendo wouldn't have said "700k across Europe" but more like "700k in Western Europe and about a billion more in Eastern Europe". For X360 I would say it doesn't make sense to not include Eastern Europe in the estimates, although it's very hard to estimate out of more or less nothing (but that's the same situation for many other countries in Central, Northern, Southern and Western Europe).

Posted this in the other thread, but since that one will probably be locked I will post it here:

Nintendo really knows how to disrupt the market. Everyone in their right mind predicted the DS to fail against the PSP. So what happens? Nintendo makes everyone look like fools. Amazing. I can't think many products that have been so globally successful as the DS has been (the iPod is the only thing that comes to mind at the moment).

Nintendo worldwide domination confirmed. J/K ;p

Yeah, a bit premature to declare that just yet, but what Nintendo has accomplished thus far is just absolutely insane! Again, my props to Nintendo. They deserve it.
