The core members from the original development team got together this time to develop Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age, but the first thing that we thought was "to not only improve visual and sound expression, but also to reconstruct the game design itself so that the players can experience a new Final Fantasy XII as a modern game."

We created this game as a new game for PS4 by devising multiple mechanics based on the Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System that was only released in Japan in 2007. It featured a more comfortable gameplay experience for our players, including changes to the growth system and the battle design where different strategies can be used compared to the original Final Fantasy XII. I'm sure that this experience will surpass the memories of those who played the original Final Fantasy XII. For those playing for the first time, this will be an experience like never before.

New and Recreated Visuals and Sound

Improved Visual Expressiveness
When creating the HD version of the visuals, we were careful to preserve the unique graphical texture of Akihiko Yoshida's character illustrations while enhancing the expressiveness with modern technology.

And so, not only did we increase the resolution of the character models, but we have also strived to improve the textures such as the skin, hair, cloth, leather, metal, and any other material.

We have also improved the expressiveness of light and shadow by implementing modern lighting technology. The world inside the game can now be enjoyed with a greater sense of atmosphere and depth as we have enhanced the natural blur (depth of field) and soft lighting (ambient occlusion).

Oh yes, the resolution increases even more if you play this title on a 4K compatible TV with a PS4 Pro, so please try it out if you have the environment to do so.

Improved Sound Expressiveness
We have re-recorded all tracks (Approximately 100!) with live performances, at the hands of Hitoshi Sakimoto who was also the composer on the original FFXII.

When we first started developing FFXII TZA, we thought that having two types of tracks — the PS2 internal sound source version and the Original Soundtrack version released as a CD — was enough. However, when I mentioned to Hitoshi Sakimoto about that, he said "re-recording with live performances would be more effective as a modern game," and I was tricked into doing so by that too-good-to-be-true offer.

As a result, it was definitely the right decision to re-record the tracks! I'm confident that the sustaining sounds and lingering emotion unique to live performance has further enhanced the sense of presence and immersion in FFXII TZA.

We have even asked Hitoshi Sakimoto to compose new tracks (Eight!) for boss battles and maps, so I would love for his fans to look forward to that as well.

We have also devised the following improvement to sound expressiveness aside from the tracks:

  • We have fully included both Japanese and English voices, and those can be switched anytime from the configuration menu.
  • We have strived to playback the voices in high definition, which will make the characters' lines sound clearer than ever. This should help you to feel the details and nuance of each cutscene even more.
  • The sound for FFXII was compatible with Dolby Pro Logic II, but this title is now compatible with 7.1ch surround sound.

Improvements That Make a More Enjoyable Adventure
  • We have greatly reduced the loading times, allowing for a more light-footed adventure.
  • We have added an auto-save functionality aside from the ability to save at a save crystal, which was present in FFXII.
  • We have incorporated a double speed functionality that will increase the speed of movement throughout the entire game.
  • We have included a useful feature that overlays a location map on the screen with a push of the L3 button. This allows you to seamlessly check your current location and destination, even in a complex map.

That sounds like a lack of downsampling to me.

I'll make you a deal, SE. I'll give this mediocre FF another shot and you give me KH3 trailer, eh?

Seriously doe I have hard time justifying myself paying that much for XII (especially when stuff like Crash Remake releasing right next to it and putting it to shame when it comes to price).

But I'll probably get it day 1 anyway since it's FF and I can't help myself.

I think it's pretty interesting that, until this gets released next month, that FF 12 (I think) is the only numbered FF game that is available for purchase on only 1 platform.

Never played FF12.

Did they change the story narrative in focusing on Ashelia instead of Vaan?

Vaan is the character you control but the story doesn't focus on him. If anyone is the main narrative character it's Ashe, the story hasn't changed from original though

Is the X/X-2 remake available on Xbox 1? Or is this a PS3/PS4 thing.

Thank god the voices are updated. That was a major pet peeve for me back in the day, and one of the reasons I never finished the game.

You mean you didn't enjoy all the characters sounding like they were talking through kazoos? Strange

I really like the trailer properly focusing on Ashe as the narrative's actual main character.

Also Balthier still the best.

Talks about improvements like character models and sound quality, zero improvements to the actual story.

Hope you enjoy 10 hour chunks through areas and dungeons where the characters don't say jack shit to each other or connect in any meaningful way.

I've got this version pre-ordered and I'm looking forward to the gameplay changes, but I'll never stop being salty over the wasted narrative. This could have been the best FF story ever and what you get is the burnt remains of a larger script.

I'm excited to see them finally retconning the marketing to make Ashe the main character.

I'll be buying Day 1, but I won't deny that the game looks pretty bad. The characters should have gotten new models with more geometry like FFXHD did.

This is what happens when the Director/Scenario writer leaves the development midway.

Compared to Matsuno's other FF work, FFT. The plot in this game is garbage tier.

I have a feeling that Matsuno is the only one who could develop a good Ivalice game.

I hope Square doesn't touch the Ivalice setting without Matsuno's involvement.

Whilst I cannot wait to play this it does make me sad there hasn't been another Ivalice based game since :(

I'm not counting Revanent Wings D:

change to the story would almost never happen in a remaster.

Story trailer? From what I remember, the game barely has enough story to fit into a trailer :p

It's astounding to see FF threads praise this game so hard

and it is hilarious to see them push Balthier so hard. I mean anyone who's played the game will anyway, but it kind of ruins the joke lol

Also Balthier still the best.

It's kind of impossible to tell any amount of narrative from XII and have it not appear to very obviously be Ashe's story

I never understand people who complain about Vann's role as if he's center stage. The only way you could ever gleem that opinion was if you were never paying attention lol

The haters moved on to attacking XIII, if someone made a thread titled "FFXII should have been remade instead of VII" I'm sure they'd be back in droves :P

My hype levels are through the roof now! That was a perfect trailer for XII. I literally laughed out loud when Balthier said his line that he thought it'd be hard.
Very happy to see Ashe take center stage where she belongs.

My most anticipated game this year is a remaster of a 11-year old game that I've already played. Can't wait!

Edit: Voices improved but alas it's still not the greatest quality. Or am I crazy?

I will play the crap out of this again with pleasure! Omega Mk XII and Yiazmat, it's gonna take a long ass time but you're going down for a second time!

Soundtrack is sooooo good too. Can't wait for this one!

Resolution increase on Pro confirmed! This is probably my second most anticipated game this year, and it's a remake.

I just meant they aren't trying to suggest Vaan as the central character through editing or anything.
Not that I mind Vaan as a character, he's an alright guy.
The scene of him asking how old Fran is, is priceless

Fuck yes.

Best FF is better than ever. Now if only we could get them to give Vagrant Story and FFT the same treatment.

edit: OMG 4K? I knew I bought this Pro for a reason.
