AMD's products are still completely irrelevant to 75% of the small desktop computing market. Only thing Intel is sweating about is the inevitable death of the home PC.
 
So the same AMD/Intel fanboy war is still going on, huh.

No, they're talking about the server market, in which AMD just completely destroyed with higher yields and better value.

Or, to put it another way, AMD has put out a product for the one/two socket server market at a price point that's impossible for Intel to compete at without completely tanking their gross margin.

Aren't they what people buy for budget builds?

Ironically, AMD just released Ryzen 3. Their focus was always on higher-end computing with Ryzen and Threadripper.

Well, I mean it kind of is. Ryzen -- whether it be in Epyc or not -- was fabbed on 14nm LPP, which is an efficiency process not particularly known for higher voltages or clocks. edit: It does, however, do well in efficiency.

You can't denigrate it by calling a consumer product a cast-off server product and then call the server product a glued-together consumer product.

Much like intel their dies are hybrids that often serve two markets.

Intel is scared of threadripper. It it works out like Ryzen did they might have actual competition in the workstation / data center space. Good stuff. Intel should get back to developing good products instead of insulting the competition.

This isn't really gaming discussion (I know people are hoping for Ryzen-based consoles, but Epyc is probably reaching a bit far), however I honestly find it pretty impressive what AMD have managed to do with its "glued-together" Zeppelin dies.

With a fairly minute fraction of the R&D budget of Intel, AMD managed to design a single die (the 8 core Zeppelin die, 1 of which is used in Ryzen, 2 in Threadripper and 4 in Epyc) which is used in products that can compete both with Intel's ~$150 desktop CPUs and their $10,000 server chips. They're not necessarily perfect products at every price point, but they're competitive across most of the range, which is impressive when you consider both their complete absence from almost all of these markets for the past few years, and their smaller budget forcing them to do with a single die what Intel does with (afaik) 5 or 6.

The server performance, where you would expect the "glued-together" nature of the Epyc CPUs to be most apparent, is actually possibly their best achievement. Anandtech's early comparison between Epyc and Skylake-SP published yesterday is well worth the read for anyone interested in this stuff. A system with 2 of AMD's new Epyc 7601 CPUs ($4200 apiece) is not only competitive with a dual Xeon 8176 ($8719 apiece) system, but even manages to comfortably outperform it in more than one test. For a company that hasn't had an even remotely competitive product in this category for years now, to be able to jump to that performance level with something that's "glued together" is quite a feat. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if there are circumstances where AMD has achieved a genuine order-of-magnitude performance improvement over their last server chips.

And Zen CPU architecture for AMD changes things. The only reason Intel is now in a position where they have to put out stupid PR like this is because they have not innovated for consumer CPUs in atleast 5 years and allowed AMD to mostly catch up to them with like 1/10th of their expense with just one product launch.

Call it the limitations of silicon if you want, the facts are the facts.

Ryzen has managed to find itself a place as, effectively speaking, the (more) affordable workbench/multitasking CPU. E.g. Why pay two-three times the price on a high end intel CPU to shave an extra two minutes off your video rendering? Or if you're into streaming, those extra cores will mean your framerate and/or quality takes less of a hit, even if in non-streaming use it doesn't reach as high as an equivalent intel CPU.

They've hardly taken the lion's share of CPUs yet, but have managed to quickly claw back a good chunk of new purchases this year.
