Hi GAF,
As the title suggests, Im planning my summer holiday trip this year and I wanted to visit some places from Canada and the north West Coast from the US. These are the only things that are set on stone:
- Flying to Chicago on the 3rd of September.
- Staying at Chicago from the 19th/20th of September to the 23rd of September.
- Flyng back from Chicago on the 23rd of September.
I'm travelling with my girlfriend and she wants to see nature meanwhile I'm more of an "urban" traveller so to speak. So my idea was something like this:
- Flying from Chicago to Seattle on the 4th of September.
- Spend 4 nights at Seattle and leaving on the 8th of September to Vancouver (by bus? train?).
- Spend 4 nights at Vancouver and leaving on the 12th to Calgary (by plane).
- Renting a car on Calgary and spending the next 7 days at the Rocky mountains (mainly Jasper, Banff and Yoho).
- Flying from Calgary to Chicago on the 19th or 20th of September.
Now the questions:
- Are there enough days for the Rocky Mountains? I could remove a couple of days from Seattle and Vancouver but that should be the max. number of days I could spend there (9). As I said we want to go to Jasper and Banff mainly but if we could go to Yoho too then it'd be nice.
- The first idea was renting a car in Seattle and doing everything by car (Seattle-Vancouver-Rocky Mountains) but leaving the car in Calgary was pretty expensive and coming back to Seattle from the Rocky Mountains was a 1-day trip so that's why we are doing it like I explained (but if you have a better suggestion, please tell me). My question is, do I need a car in Seattle and Vancouver? How is the public transport there? And how can I get to Vancouver from Seattle using public transport? (bus or train?)
- I know there are some nature spots near Vancouver but what about Seattle? Could we do a 1-day trip to any of the near parks? (Rainier, Olympic or St. Helens?)
- I wanted to got to Portland for a couple of days but I'm already stretching too much the Schedule and I don't think it could fit there. Would you recommend doing at least a 1-day trip to Portland from Seattle?
- Is the weather going to be nice to do hikes on the Rocky Mountains? (middle of September). What kind of weather should I expect there? (and Seattle & Vancouver)
- And of course, what would you recommend to do on Seattle, Vancouver and Rocky Mountains? Any general tips? I'd love to try good food places and see the architecture there (for cities) and my girlfriend would love to visit parks and places where she can take good pictures with her camera for example but we're open to every kind of activity
As always thanks in advance for answering! And have a nice summer holiday if you're not enjoying it yet
