Xbox 360 Spring 2007 Dashboard Update Discussion

What, if anything, do we know about the upcoming Spring 2007 Update for the Xbox 360 dashboard? It should be coming in the relatively near future, so have you guys heard any solid info on what it will entail?

I realize that this will turn into a “features I hope Microsoft adds with the next update” topic, but I’m hoping that the GAF collective here can piece together whatever actual info there is out there. Also, we have enough topics about “Home” and what people want in backwards compatibility updates, so I ask that we can forgo those discussions.

These are some RUMORS I’ve heard, and I’m hoping someone can verify if any of this is true:

A fellow NeoGAF member told me that he thought a recent issue of OXM said the Spring Update will “unbind” content from the console it was purchased on, allowing your profile to play the content you paid for anytime on any console without you having to be signed into Xbox Live. This would be great news for people who’ve had a console die on them like I have, or anyone hoping to upgrade to the “Zephyr” at some point. Can anyone confirm if OXM actually said this?

I’ve heard rumblings (no solid source) about a “casual friendly” version of the UI you could activate that was “idiot proof”, something like a single menu (no blades) that wouldn’t be as “intimidating” as the current dashboard. It seems consistent with Microsoft’s approach, but it could have just been dreamed up on a message board.

Microsoft’s Scott Henson, on Major Nelson’s podcast #212, suggested that Marketplace could get a major overhaul, including lots of ways to filter content, a way to rate content, and even a way to see which content is the most popular with you friends and the greater community. It was unclear to me if he implied this was coming soon or if this was a “might happen someday” riff he was on.

Then what about the seemingly basic features the community has been repeatedly begging for since 2005, but never gets? I'm not talking about outlandish requests, but the consistently most requested features that still haven’t gotten addressed.

-Group voice-chat and video-chat. People always whine about this on message boards, and perhaps rightfully so, since the original Xbox had group voicechat for crying out loud!

-Tell me what game is currently in the 360. The PS3 does this. So does the Wii. The 360 was advertised to do this back in 2005. What the hell happened?

-Letterboxed 16:10 support. The VGA adapter is very popular because it is seen as a cheap way to display the 360’s HD graphics. Widescreen monitors are typically in a 16:10 aspect ratio, unlike HDTV’s at 16:9, which usually leaves VGA users stuck with a stretched picture they can’t fix. Whenever there is an update, monitor users beg for the option the to have a the 360 output a black bar at the top and bottom of the screen so that the image displays in its undistorted 16:9 state, but it goes unanswered.

-The ability to delete played games or achievements. Even since people realized that trial XBLA games are permanently locked to their gamercard back in November 2005, they have complained about this. Don’t make it easy to accidentally delete every achievement you’ve ever gotten, but if I played the demo of Crystal Quest or rented Rumble Roses, got one achievement, hated the game and wanted to delete if forever, I should be able to. If Microsoft wants people to feel a real sense of ownership about their gamerscores, achievements, etc. they need to give gamers more control over it.

I've seen these complaints in every topic about what changes the dashboard needs, they seem pretty reasonable to me, but 2 updates later and still nada.

I hope this will happen, but wouldn't make much sense, considering its not a HDTV standard and having to code specific odd Widescreen sizes would take some tricky work.

For example: running 1280x1024 just pillar-boxes the content, it doesn't stretch it. (5:4 aspect)

Although I do see them coding 1440x900 or similar res letterboxed though, with black bars on top and bottom. Still not "true" 16:10 though, but at least the aspect is right.

there are some HD-DVD audio fixes/changes confirmed (mainly the ability to output TrueHD tracks as DTS instead of DD)

I wouldn't expect anything major or it would have been leaked by now. What is the last secret Microsoft kept?

I feel like there's very little that I would want changed. Basically everything is there already.

One minor trivial change: show the name of the game in your tray instead of 'Game' or DVD. I want to know what game is in there.

Group chat

I'm tired and have no other ideas.

Dude, if you rented Rumbe Roses, you deserve to have that stigma in your portfolio at all times. I agree that mere demos shouldn't register in the list, though.

According to Amir Majidimehr, one feature that is supposed to be rectified is how DTS is handled for HD-DVD movies. As I understand it, one will have the option to output DD and DTS @ 1500kbps. Whereas now, the only output option is DD @ 640kbps. I think that the 'level' or volume bug for some HD-DVD movies is supposed to be fixed as well.

Per Amir, the fix has been finished for some time now but the Xbox team wanted to roll out the update with the larger spring update.

EDIT: sangreal beat me to it. :)

Yeah, this is one of the things stopping me buying a 360. I don't have an HDTV, but I do have a nice enough 19" widescreen monitor in my bedroom.

I honestly wish it would just run a lot faster, it takes way to long to load up things on it.

why for example does it take 3 seconds to find the all of 3 profiles on my console?

I'm playing on a 16:10 monitor right now, for me the streched image is not a deal breaker, but still noticable and not cool.

Your monitors don't have the option to not stretch images? My (rather old now) LCD has like 3 options: Fill screen, 1:1 or Stretch but maintain aspect ratio

The demos showing up on your gamerscore is clutter. I play the arcade demos on my "clutter" account so I don;t have to see them in my real profile. Crazy looking at some profiles and seeing 1 purchased game and 20 demos with a 0 score.

I swear to you my Samsung doesn't have the option, and just stretches the image to fit the screen no matter what. After doing some research it appears to me that this is not uncommon among "LCDTV" monitors. They like to just scale everything to fit.

I thought I was the only person who bothered with the hassel of a "clutter account".:lol

My 16:10 20" Samsung has an option to stretch the content, and although it's not perfect, you'd never notice. And even then, there's less overscan than on my HD CRT, which had very little overscan for a CRT.

There's no stretch option at 1680x1050 or 1080p with the PS3, but the horizontal compression there is also very hard to notice. In 1080p, the horizontal setting automatically expands to 2200 "pixels" to automatically compensate for the ratio.

Have the same problem with my Samsung 22' 1680x1050 on my home comp, it just upscales (streching) the 1280x720, without a fixed size. The aspect is off, and you can notice it pretty clearly. It would be nice to at least code the 16:10 reses in so it could fit better on an LCD Monitor.

I was actually referring to 16:10 owners complaints that they don't want the image stretched for them. I assume you are saying you can have it letterboxed and 16:9 or stretched to fill the whole 16:10.

SPEED UP THE XBOX GUIDE!

It's way too slow. The blades slide in, totally empty. After a short while, the content slowly fades in. Any selection causes a long fade-out and fade-in to the new content. It sucks!

Opening it up to check my friend list, listening to messages, replying to messages... all of this takes longer than it used to take in original Xbox games! What the **** Microsoft?!

I don't give a shit if it ends up looking ugly because of it. I want it to be FAST. Hell, make it an option! Slow and "pretty", or fast and simplistically ugly. I guarantee most people will go for the fastest option.

Did you guys not run this through usability testing? Any decent gamer would have told you that it's way too slow for anyone to enjoy.

That's probably because they want to keep more RAM available to the games, which is the way to go IMO. The 360 OS uses less memory than the PS3's.

I'm with you all the way. I turn shit like that off in Windows. The guide blade doesn't need to slowly slide in from the left side of the screen, just have it appear right away! Screw transitions.

Yea I've always figured that's why it kinda went slow. It is annoying, to be honest, but I'd rather the RAM be spent on games, so it's something I am wholely willing to accept.

i've not heard it as much but integrated clan support so that it's universal and not game specific.

isn't clan support already integrated in the dashboard?

??? What does this have to do with anything? Making the Guide faster by removing useless graphical effects won't make it use more RAM. It will do the exact opposite.

And it's not the amount of RAM that decides how fast a simple GUI is: It's how it's designed. Why was it designed to slowly slide in, and then fade in the content? Because someone thought it looked fancy and neat. Well I don't want it. I want it to appear instantly. Hell make the damn thing monochrome and look like a freaking DOS application if you must.

I want it to be lightning fast.

not a good excuse since it's slow as hell while you are just in the dashboard while no game is running. if you pop the blade up while playing a game it's understandably slow but while i am just in the main dash?

When Microsoft demoed the Vista guide and dash stuff it was instant, no fade in, it's not a design choice.

For that, i'm suprised. Microsoft, of ALL PEOPLE, not letting us turn of transitions. Easily done on XP, Vista, 2000 even. It does make things simpler and smoother.

Seeing that the system does not require a Hard drive, they would have to store both layouts on the system, so I'm not sure it would save you any space. Unless the layout is stored in a seperate memory store on the system, which it may be, then I don't see how adding a simpler UI would help much.

Are you guys talking about the Guide (the blade that pops up over games/dashboard), or the dashboard itself? Because the Guide is a slow POS but the dashboard has an intentional fading effect

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem but anymore it takes up to 2 minutes for me to access my videos on the hard drive. It's incredibly slow. I don't care if I've got a couple >1GB video files on there, it shouldn't be taking this long for the videos to appear on the blade.

The game sounds interesting at least, maybe a Worms like one?

Maybe? Its from the GDC presentation I linked above. I have never played a 360 game w/ clan support so I assumed it worked through the guide like that

I'm talking about the Guide. The dashboard is sufficiently fast, except for how long it takes to seek stuff (ie. finding videos, music, etc.) or navigating the Marketplace.

While the Guide is a slow POS, even when nothing else is running. It becomes smooth, but it still has painfully long sliding and fading effects. It's just painful.

Wow! Accidentally shown info on a new LIVE feature?:lol

Wow, I think sangreal just CONFIRMED clan support for the next update.

And the "360 guide" does have pointless fade-in/fade-out transition effects all the time, they just really chug when you are playing certain games. I say get rid of them entirely.

What I don't like about is how the PC is becoming an Xbox, somewhat defeating the purpose of buying an Xbox 360...

Xbox 360 had XBL....now PC has Live...

Xbox 360 had streamlined and easy-to-use (IMO) dashboard functionality..now PC has it

Xbox 360 had Gears of War......now PC is getting it.

Xbox 360 had a wired console controller....now PC has it

Xbox 360 had a wireless controller....now PC has it (needs the wireless receiver)

Xbox 360 had XBLA...now PC has Live Arcade

Originally I thought Microsoft's whole "convergence" strategy was an excellent idea, pushing simplicity and unification to easen the confusion of individuals who aren't too tech savvy. But now, Microsoft is making my 400 dollar console seem less and less special by putting all of its premier titles (one by one) on the PC.

This is getting ridiculous. If BK3 makes its way onto the PC, I'm selling my 360...for a fancy PC.
[/quote]

I'd like to quote myself to stress this point.

And here I thought that Cattle Battle Herd thing or whatever it's called was just some XBLA thing that had gone completely under my radar.

Wait, do you have a 360? You speak as though you're unsure about the 360's current Guide functionality.

if its there, i've never seen it or heard anything about it. i keep seeing requests for it almost every day on various forums.

Other than the Dashboard update...I really really wish MS would impliment some sort of NAS support. Possibly just for Music and Pictures? (Not Video since the actual decoding seems to be done on the PC end).

I really hate having to turn my PC on everytime I want to play some music on my 360. Screw having your console attached to a PC to have the "full" experience. blah

I don't think its even a real game. I think it only exists to show off the features in the demonstration

Yes, I have had a 360 since launch. I just don't play on live very much (other than Gears/Crackdown co-op). I do know that some games support clans, and I saw those slides and assumed that it worked in the same way.

-They need to give more customizability options to the theme devs if possible. As it stands, the downloadable themes are merely wallpaper picture packs for the three themes (Base, Glass, Carbon)
-Let you transfer music from ipods/computer/whatever to the console. I haven't bought a single blank CD in nearly 3 years.

It was the one you used as an example. The blade stuttering issue is mildly irritating at best but when you get anal enough to bitch about 3 seconds then YOU have issues.
