360 May Dashboard Update will implement content restriction to different territories

Another question though, I want to download some HD movies off of the US Video Marketplace, but I live in Europe. How do I do this? I have a credit card, so do I have to enter a fake address?

You can do it now, but you won't be able to with the new dashboard since it will use your IP geolocalization to make sure you are allowed to get this content.
It's unfortunate, but it was to be excepted :/

All this could go away if you stop being lazy and provide content to everyone, Microsoft! Why must you feast on the tears of your patrons? WHY?! :'(

MS especially hates Germany. MS does not sell Crackdown and Gears of War here. We don't get the download content on our marketplace either. Til the new dashboard update hits, we are still able to get the dlc from another marketplace. But after the dashboard update, there won't be any dlc for us. MS is truly ****ing us in the ass. Of course the rest of europe get the games and the dlc.

we may not get features and fixes we ask for but MS sure knows how to make us happy... wait...

german gamers - love those games an import them
german politician hate those games - because ... there stupid ****ers ;)

but m$ hates german gamers sooo mouch that they didnt even release games like crackdown (sony is releasing gow 2 uncut here ...no problem and this is way more violent than crackdown.....)

I actually read through the article a couple times, and that sucks. International rights being that difficult can only assist piracy.

germanys ratings board wouldn't rate gears or crackdown and msft has a policy of not publishing unrated games. you should blame the ratings board for not giving the games a rating.

definitely sucks about the dlc situation though.

It's not Microsoft who just decided to do this to piss you off. Do you have any idea how fiercely territorial rights are protected by media companies? Almost no one licenses movies or TV shows globally nowadays. So many companies have different licensing agreements for every damn country in the Western hemisphere. It sucks big time. Just before I downloaded the Joost beta (internet TV) and half the channels are region specific. Gametap isn't available in Europe, why, because they don't like money? No, because rights are too hard to negotiate internationally. Same with the iTunes store and most online music and video stores, ETC ETC ETC.

You guys need to learn more about media rights and licensing before shooting your mouths off. Like they're sitting there in Redmond thinking, "We don't want to sell downloads to Europe. Their money looks silly and we don't want any of it!" Jesus, get a clue.

Why? Why why why? What the hell is this supposed to do? Prevent people from spending money? :lol

heard about copyright? They risk to lose a lot of money in courts if they'll allow distribution of content in a territories where this content is not licensed or outright forbidden. Also preparations for IPTV do not help here, those content providers do not trust internet, and they've got good reasons for it :) MS needs to show their commitment to Copyright Gods, and some sacrificial lambs may be necessary.

I just hope they will not close US accounts for countries where there are no official Live. That would be kinda stupid.

**** that policy. It would be possible to release the games here , but MS is just overcautious. There is no way 360 will gain any marketshare when the best games are not available to us customers.

I edited because I have no claims to knowledge of laws, especially international law. I also assumed this meant they didn't get arcade games or DLC for games. I'm guessing that wont happen, though and this is just movies and stuff like that.

What about shit like game trailers, demos, themes etc ?

It will depend on the publisher I guess. Some still have a hard time understanding that whole "countries" thing.

Burger said:

who said they were restricted?

Because if they will I will be pissed off. I understand why they would restrict the movies since they are surely getting a bollocking from the movie industry at the moment (like Valis already explained).

on the internets, there's only ONE country. or... NONE country? i dunno.

Uhm, but the games ARE available to customers here (in Germany). Just online - but I´d say everyone going for a 360 knows how to order online.
Why should MS invest money to publish a game in a country, where they are not allowed to promote it in any kind or form? Makes no business sense. So they better get rid of the region coding, and publish multilanguage games.
Hey, just take a look at the pictures from the first Gears shipment, that Spielegrotte sent out. Amazon still cries... ;-)

Sounds like it sucks, but on the positive side, we may see more content from providers as they will be happier if licensing is enforced better.

Seriously, I would not be surprised if a lot of the content from the Japanese marketplace (well, lot is a bit much since there is almost nothing there in the first place) was restricted to Japan only. Japanese publishers seem even more brain-dead about this kind of stuff than usual.

WELL, I guess this means no more content for me until MS launches in the Philippines. Which, judging from how much piracy goes on here, will probably never happen.

**** THIS SHIT IN THE ASS. Good thing I'm going off to study college in the US this fall.

Edit: This better just be movies, since I don't buy those anyway. If demos and DLC get restricted............

Come on guys, who seriously thought they would let this hole open?

Yeah it sucks donkeyballs for us non-Americans they get more sweet content ie. picture packs and themes for free and moviemarketplace, but that is the way MS wants it.

To be honest, I'm quite happy I was able to download all that free content. I just now hope MS aren't being dickwats and continue to not-support the European marketplace.

The real question here is why is Microsoft as a platformholder, store owner etc etc is allowing content to be shipped which is not always allowed in all regions. Why are they allowing free content like themes in the US but not Europe. Look at the 24 picture pack/theme, 24 is broadcasted here in the Netherlands, and pretty sure in the rest of Europe. Yet we don't get any of those pictures via the normal route.

MS could have been a leader by saying to FOX 'you are the owners of this IP, sure we'll help you promote this, but only if you also want to promote in EMEA'. They could do these things. Just as they can force the filmstudios to bring movies to Europe. I for one don't care about custom languages or subtitles, give me my HD movie and I'm set.

Yes, most likely it will. Allmost definitly it will mean no marketplace AT ALL for you.

I think we should stop spreading horror messages until we know more.

I very much doubt that this is the case btw.

Sony does this too. Big ****ing whoop!

Huh the demos and trailers on my uk ps3 say other wise. Gutted we get zero free gamer pics themes etc and zero real video content balls this ms. I imported a elite for nothing.

I am trying for over 2 years to get my hotmail account set to The Netherlands. So I am not really convinced about MS's abilities in setting locations correct.

So I am a little sceptical.

I wonder what happens if I get the dashboard update via my american account :)

Yeah I am a little concerned myself, but the way I read their statement is that it will simply rely on IP now instead of chosen territory. Guess we will know in a few days :)

YEAAAAAH!!!

Instead of 16:10 support for 1680*1050 we get content restrictions...

THANK YOU MICROSOFT for listening to your customers...
