May was another strong month for gaming north of the border, as the industry tracking NPD Group today released its Canadian retail sales figures, showing growth across the board.

The research firm's figures show Canadian gaming retail sales for May topped C$72 million ($67.5 million), an 83 percent jump over May 2006's tally of just over C$39.3 million ($36.8 million). Hardware sales experienced the most growth, up 149 percent to C$32.5 million ($30.5 million), easily besting the previous May's C$13 million ($12.2 million). Game sales were up a slimmer 42 percent to C$30.9 million ($29 million), while accessories soared 87 percent to C$8.7 million ($8.2 million).

Nintendo again earned bragging rights for the month, with the Wii and DS first and second in hardware sales, respectively. The Wii moved more than 37,300 systems for the month, with the DS close behind at 35,900. The PlayStation 2 was the next best-selling piece of hardware with a little more than half the sales of the DS, nearly reaching 18,200 units moved. The rest of the pack was rounded out by the PlayStation Portable (15,000), Xbox 360 (12,300), PlayStation 3 (6,500), and Game Boy Advance (6,100).

Canadian consumers also shelled out for Wii accessories, with 24,600 Wii Nunchuks sold at retail, and 22,900 Wii Remotes, according to the NPD Group. The third best-selling accessory of the month, a Wii Points card, lagged couldn't keep up with the controllers, notching 6,800 purchased in May.

Nintendo also claimed the top four spots in the software charts for the month, with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the DS backed up by Wii games Mario Party 8 and Wii Play, in that order. Activision's Spider-Man 3 for the PS2 snapped Nintendo's streak by snagging fifth place on the charts. The rest of the NPD Group's Canadian top 10 follows below.

a rough estimate of US sales would be multiplying all those figures by 10.
 
Wii is killing everyone there. Very impressive. It'll surpass 360 before the end of the year.
 
22,000 wii-motes and 16,000 Wii Play w/ remote, for 37,000 consoles sold. People are buying second controllers at more than a 1-1 rate. Ultimate party system confirmed. Gotta wonder why those 22,000 didn't just shell out the extra $10 for Wii Play. It's worth that at least.

Oh yeah, I can't imagine buying the console without another Wiimote. It's a total must. It's ingrained into the DNA of the system. Oh, shit. I just got that. "Wii." Like We. Beats "Let's Play Together" by a country mile.

Yes I doubt the 360 will ever have a pricedrop, and the PSP is only getting more and more popular while the 360 is obviously on its last leg.

I cant speak for all Canadians, but where i live 360 and PS3 are highly wanted, just as much as Wii. A price drop on those two and they will probably pull Wii numbers.

Impossible, most people I've asked don't even know a PS3 is out or say they've already got a 360. Either that or they don't know about either and want a Wii.

That's pretty much how it is across all of Canada.
 
Canada's always been pretty pro-Nintendo with a strong slant towards multiplayer/party gaming.

I've never seen a Wii on a storeshelf up here ever since launch.

If EA and Take 2 get their NHL franchises out on the Wii this fall .... game over, man, game over.

For me most people answer like these two situations:

1.
Wii? Person: "HELL YES"
360? Person: "HELL NO I HATE 360"
PS3? Person: "Yeah, when it gets REALLY cheap and FFXIII comes out"

2.
Wii? Person: "HELL YES"
360? Person: "Yeah, when it gets REALLY cheap and Halo 3 comes out"
PS3? Person: "Maybe, when it gets REALLY cheap"

Pretty much almost everyone i know wants a Wii, even some of my friends who are complete graphic whores.

Funny since
a) Xbox destroyed GameCube in Canada, moreso than most regions in the World

and

b) I interviewed the NoC's president long ago and he admitted that Nintendo was behind on online gaming when Canada was wired for broadband.

I don't think it has anything to do with Canada in general. I think the Wii's sales are consistent Worldwide based on it's own merits, rather than claiming that people of a specific geographical area have their own specific tastes and such.

QFT, I don't know a single person who wants a PS3 around here (montreal) and I know one person who bought one. Wii is in high demand, X360 is in okay demand, PS3 is almost never spoken of.
 
Good numbers for Pokemon. PS3's flailing badly here. Not surprising, given they raised the goddam price from launch in spite of our stronger dollar. They better start packing games in like MS does.

Yeah I was going to add "except the GameCube". For whatever reason that system just never clicked for Nintendo here. The Wii is more like the SNES or N64 in Canada except even more popular out of the gates I think.

As for NHL Wii ... I dunno, how long does it really take to take the engine that's on the PS2/XBox (are they even making an XBox 1 version this year?) and add Wii controls to that?

The 360 will have a pricedrop soon, and the PSP is barely outselling it right after having one. Can you not put that together logically in your head and deduce a future result where the 360 may again one day outsell it?

I'm not sure, but I think Canada got a bit higher of a shipment last month because Canada has really been stock-starved throughout the first few months of 2007.

Usually it's a little higher than a 10:1 ratio I think.
