Why is it that crossplatform games on the PS3 are inferior to that on the 360? Honestly there is no comparision between the 360 version of Rainbow 6 Vegas and that on the PS3. I haven't seen a game yet except for Oblivion that can equal the 360 versions. Why is that? I'm so looking to add to my PS3 library, but all that comes out is crap compared to the same games on the 360. Thank God for Resistance, Oblivion, and I guess MotoStorm. Honestly, I'm trying to look at this objectively...just as a gamer...but so far in terms of crossplatform games...PS3 has only had garbage compared to it's counterparts. Rainbow had a lot of promise...but it has failed. In addition, there is no exclusive maps/content on the PS3 version.

How do the versions of The Darkness compare? I'm curious.

I've just played the PS3 version. It's inferior. Having played both, it's an easy assessment to make.

should be in the official thread....lock it up boys! :lol (Just my two cents. I dont notice really any differance in the PS3 version compared to 360)

I guess you were playing it in 1080i.

Uncheck 1080i, so it'll play in 720p, and there is a WORLD of difference from what I hear.

I'm just speaking as someone who is disappointed. I was looking for improvement. Not a decrease in quality. I also don't want this to turn into a PS3/XBOX loyalist battle. I just want to know why there is a lack of quality in the PS3 versions of the same games? Are they "XBOX" Ports? It's just disheartening.

Dark10x said no AA or motion blur in PS3 version

Your objectivity and your honesty astounds me.

Plus there's two exclusive maps as well as the premium map pack included for free on the game...so I'm not sure where the op is coming from.

How is it inferior on the PS3? If nothing else, I would expect lazy ports to just be pretty much the same?

New content came out today for the 360 version and I believe it contained those "exclusive" maps.

I am sorry you view my opinion as disingenuous. I have both systems. I want quality for both. I consider myself a person who enjoys playing videogames. I was expressing my disappointment up to this point with the PS3 versions of crossplatform games. I consider games like Resistance...to be fantastic. I'm just disappointed when I throw down $60 and get a lesser quality product that has been out on the market since last November.

Scar, mind going into more detail about the "disappointment"? I have been following the release of the PS3 version pretty damn fervently, and all the initial opinions and reviews are saying its a decent port.

If you never got the 360 version, why did you wait so long for the PS3 version? Was delayed forever and had "lazy port" written all over it from day 1; it's not like anyone else is shocked that it's not Vegas 2.5.

And yes...the new map pack came out last night for 360 Rainbow...so there is no exclusive content, though you do have to pay for the 360 content. 800 Points...I know it is steep.

I don't trust any comparison videos from this game. Most of them are probably on 1080i, since everyone needs to set their console to that unless they want to be playing 1080i/p content in 480p (unless the game supports 2 resolutions, a la RSV) but apparently there is a huge problem with these 1080i modes for 720p native games like RSV. Which is why 1080i looks like a jaggy mess in RSV, but putting it to 720p makes it appear A LOT better.

I know it's Rainbow for the PS3 and that's a good thing. However, the controls feel awkward, load times at least in the couple of games that I played seem to actually take a bit longer. The ranking system is gone. Which in some ways can be good, but still no ranked games. Only your military rank goes up. Microphones, though a bit louder, also went in and out somewhat and sounded crackily, however, that could have been due to the connection speed of the host. Graphically as mentioned, it is not up to par with the 360. I have not dug that deep into the single player mode yet, so I can't give you concrete comparisions there. And if I go into the game a bit deeper, my opinions could change...just initially, I am disappointed.

Then those should be free right? Isn't MS policy about DLC that publishers cannot charge for items that are free on other consoles?
Im still gona buy that black pack :(

This question is so simply answered it makes me wonder why it's asked so often. Let's put it this way. If, and this is of course unlikely, but indulge me, if Insomniac were given the task of porting Rainbow 6: Vegas. No time or financial restraints. Not building from the ground up or improving it, but just porting it over to the PS3, with all their knowledge and skill of utilising the CELL processor, do you think it would still be borked?

No of course not. It would have all the effects and features of the 360 version. But of course, that isn't the case. Here we have Ubisoft who, just as they did with Splinter Cell: DA, are putting out a game for a platform with 'exotic' hardware and rather than try and invest time and money into making the game the best it can be, they would rather cram it into what they can get away with in the time they have.

So what we get is a Rainbow 6 game that's perhaps running primarily on the PPE and with little or no help (relatively speaking) from the SPUs. Building a game on the 360 and then porting it to the PS3 is difficult. The example of trying to cram a round peg into a square hole is often used because it's true.

So yes, I suspect that certain titles this fall will continue this trend while other higher profile titles for release this winter will break the trend and actually stand side by side with their PC and 360 cousins.

Simply put, the devs do a crap job of porting

QFTMFT!

I read that Sony's working with Epic to improved UE3 performance on the PS3 so maybe next time this crap won't happen... I don't blame the platform, I blame the devs.

They're used to doing 360 games and the PS3 stuff is still new to them. I'm anxious to see how some of this fall's "PS3 Lead Dev Platform" games end up looking when compared across the platforms.

You sure that's not just because you hate the controller? After all, you did call it "horrible", and complained about is (in)ability to function properly.

If a game is developed with one platform as the target they will focus on using what they can on that platform. With the 360 that means you have a great fillrate but also limited space and cpu power.

If you're making a port there is no way to fix the fillrate problem apart from reducing the number of passes you are rendering or reducing/removing some of the effects like hdr/bloom/motion blur/depth of field (if you are fillrate limited that is). Using the increased space offered is something you wouldn't do because all the textures and so on have been made for the limited platform so you don't gain any benefits from that. Regarding using the CPU they can spend all the time they have optimizing as that's the only limiting factor, the amount of time you can spend on optimizing.

Easy porting = Reduce the number of effects and don't think to replace them with new solutions.

So...still angry?

Good one...yes, anger is subsiding:D . However, still it is not an improvement over the 360 version...though being a port...that is understandable.

Only thing sure here is that you're a paranoid.

Right

There are official threads for both Rainbow Six Vegas and The Darkness on the first page of the forum, and both of them contain active discussions regarding the various versions of the games and how they compare.

Then 9 times out of 10 you'd be wrong. You have absolutely no idea what kind of money, manpower, resources and technology are made available to the devs by publishers to handle a port, especially when the port platform's userbase is considerably smaller than the platform of the lead SKU.

I am sick to death of idiots on this forum simply yelling "lazy devs" everytime a multiplatform game is better or worse on one system.

I yell: Cheap publishers!

Dan, I know GAF appears bigger than life sometimes, but think about it, how are these kids supposed to know what you know about games development? You can't blame them for these wild speculations which frustratingly morph into gospel.

My favorite one recently (paraphrased): "Maybe they'll just add AA during optimization."

To be fair, I don't really think many people here care about who in particular is responsible for the lazy port.

And yet the reviews for the PS3 version seem to say the opposite. Yahoo Games says the PS3 version has graphical improvements.
