looking at the ps3, i think it will do well in north america and especially europe. but after these shocking golf numbers, i think its pretty apparent there is a crisis. i dont even know what it is. the price? have they lost their love for sony? and what exactly can sony do to stop this. cos i feel sorry for the likes of kojima who doesnt deserve to see the excellent mgs4 bomb as hard as its going to be when released(sales wise).

It passed the 360 LTD in Japan long ago. Sony's not the one to be worried, the system is just too expensive, in time, things eventually will sort themselves out and this fall will help jumpstart that.

Japan = Wii/DS/PS3 (waggle/handheld/traditional)

It's stale GAF cliche checklist time!

Now that that's out of the way, no Sony doesn't need to hit the panic button. I don't think they're as bothered by those golf numbers as you think they should be.

PS3 will become the new PSP i think, it will sell in solid numbers but Wii and DS will just blow everyone away

In it's short life, PS3 sold less than PSPs lowest ever week for 16 weeks straight, only being pulled out of that slump my MNG5. PSP has been doing 30k weekly lately. The bump from a game as huge as MNG5 didn't even break that.

short term, the PS3 will continue to struggle but when the price starts to drop alongside a few new games then sales should improve in a consistent manner which i think will give it PSP like sales.....it wont touch the Wii however

Uhhh... considering their recent pricing/SKU scheming, there's no reason to believe there's a price drop planned. In fact, I can't remember where I heard it (I think 1UP Yours), but Sony's Japanese bigwigs fought tooth and nail to deny a 60GB PS3 price cut and only granted it if the 80GB was introduced in the previous SKU pricing. So yeah, price isn't going to look any better unless it drops, and it doesn't seem like there's any indication Sony wants to move it any time soon.

If their panic button is broken.... they need to call a handyman. Stat.

What are the golf numbers?

They don't have the gold numbers - just the system numbers. 28k this week from the MnG boost. It's only abit more than double last week's figures. It's going to be a long and hard fight for Sony..

I'm thinking it's more time to press the price drop button. There's probably quite a bit of bottled up demand for the system if not for the pricing

PS3 has a lot of big franchises coming. I think it's main problem is that it won't ever get the shovelware, which is why Wii will win.

Shovelware moves systems? In that case, why isn't the 360 on top?

And no, Sony does not need to be worried. Not yet anyways.

Mm. Wii is going to win no matter what, methinks.

What's important is for Sony to secure a big enough consumer base to keep companies like Squeenix happy.

I'm surprised there is still this level of unexpectedness with PS3's performance in Japan, because it's pretty straightforward. Sony brought the wrong system to market.

An expanded, more complicated, more time consuming experience over last gen is disinteresting to most people and only appealing to the hardcore. Most of the industry grew high on itself and thought what they wanted was what the mass market wanted, they were wrong.

Add to this the high price and Nintendo's return to basics approach being embraced wholeheartedly, it's easy to see why PS3 is the new GC.

Also, what makes you think it's going to do well in NA? It looks to be having nearly as tough a time as it is in Japan.

360 has shovelware? No not really. The top selling systems are always rocketed further by the dozens of casual shovelware games that do 30k - 50k each. I'd say that's the more important point than the few killer apps they all get. It's why every market leader from PS1 to PS2 to DS has won IMO

Yeah. It's not just shovelware that moves systems of course.. you need a mix of them, along with A, AA, AAA titles. But yeah, you're right generally.

I though PS3s were almost given out for free at JPN retailers?

By shovelware we mean products of mediocre to low quality, made for quantity, right? The 360 has quite a few of those.

Or did you rather mean cheap simple, yet innovative games that aren't meant to be high budget, high selling but rather general audience appealing?

Wii will likely have the vast majority of both

It wouldn`t be a "Please Square GIVE us a Special FF!" button?... also I guess the guys from sony maybe have a back up plan in case the wouldn`t be able to sell the number of ps3 they wanted this year.. I mean they are a big company .. the are sony.. wouldn`t be dumb if that kind of company doesn`t have a back up plan?...

..... (goes and hides) ....

Well, the point was one is considered shovelware and one... is not. And I don't see how actual shovelware would sell Wiis or any other console.

The only thing that Sony needs to do to expand its market in japan, is wrap it in LV print leather, and strap a handle to it, so that girls can carry it around like a pseudo LV hangbag, and their boyfriends can bring it home and plug it into the TV.

True... it's the shovelware that follows the best selling console, not the other way round.

(most of the time)

:lol yeah..no

it's basically the same price as the in the US now, except that they still push the 20GB model so there is a cheaper alternative.

There should be a $399 20GB PS3 on US shelves, but that is discussion for the PS3 is ****ed in the US topics ;)

Regarding the PS3 in Japan, it's pretty well screwed unfortunately. I think the PS3 will end up being my most enjoyed failure of a system of all time at this pace though, beating out the DC for me.

How well (or not so well) is the PS3 doing compared to the Cube right now?

worse. I still think it'll beat out the cube in the end though.
