Puzzle Fighter HD Remix play balance fix

I didn't know about this (maybe some have, I haven't been following the game that close) but Puzzle Fighter HD Remix is not just going to have nicer graphics and a good aspect ratio, there will be two modes, an original mode, and a mode where the play balance has been tweaked!

The game designer on the project has an extensive blog post detailing the play balance issues with the original and how they're attempting to fix it. Very interesting!

Yea, this has been known for awhile by those who have been following the game. Classic mode is called X Mode and the rebalanced modes are Y Mode and Z Mode.

Good to know.

I use to play Donovan exclusively, since Ken's drops could actually impair him. Drop too little, and all the opponent would receive would be rows of red.

Chun-li was dead easy to counter, all you had to do was stick a red and blue diamond at the base of the playing field, everytime she launched her attacks, it would translate into an instant counter for you.

New Akuma
(Unchanged Pattern
Deals 100%, Takes 120%)
I don't like the sound of Akuma's strategy, as there may be no way to deal with a player who hits hard and fast within the first minute of a game. Akuma's pattern is pretty hard to deal with once it's in your playing field.

This is interesting:
In the original game, the diamond was intended to deal only 50% of the damage you’d do by breaking the same pieces without the diamond. However, there was a glitch that allowed you to bypass this and deal 100% of the damage. In order to perform this “diamond trick,” you must first find a place on your playfield where you can rotate your diamond-piece 180 degrees with just one button press (rather than the usual two presses).

The changes are pretty dramatic, it should shake things up, at least on an advanced level.

Great article btw, thanks for linking.

It's going to be weird learning new patterns but thank god that this is no longer going to be the Donovan Shitfest Hour :D

Did the colorblind support end up making it in? I know the devs were talking about it, and I can't play the game without it (yellow and green gems are indistinguishable for me).

I was just about to ask the same question. I could never play this game because of that issue.

GAH! No more diamond trick?
Dammit...now i'm gonna hafta actually learn how to play :lol

Seriously, that was the most abused bug ever, back in the day.

I'll end up buying both the PS3 and 360 version to play different people who down own both consoles, rofl.

Money wasted confirmed, but enjoyment further reinforced.

PiP + both consoles = playing both versions at once? WTF yesss.

I must correct you for the sake of puzzlefighting: Y and Z Mode are radical new modes that completly change the gameplay.
X is the classic mode, while X' is the classic mode with the rebalanced fighters.

My eyeballs are saddened that they redrew everything for HD except the character sprites.

Yep, they really stand out, especially with the HD backrounds.
The final effect is something similar to Robin Williams out of focus in Deconstructing Harry...
