Turok_spaceship.jpg

Turok is an epic, story-driven first person shooter game set on a dark, mysterious planet in the near future. Players take on the role of Joseph Turok, a former Black Ops commando, now part of an elite Special Forces squad on a mission to take down a war criminal on a genetically-altered planet. After the ship is shot down while approaching the planet, Joseph Turok must use his instincts and elite military training to elude an army of well-trained soldiers, and the ravenous, unpredictable creatures that populate the dangerous environment. Joseph Turok's mission? Survive at all costs.

4 player co-op.
There are 3 separate co-op maps that touch on the single player storyline, but from alternate points of view.

There are 7 multiplayer maps in the retail release, supporting up to 16 players in multiplayer, with a bunch of different modes:
Deathmatch
Team Deathmatch
Capture the Flag
Assault Capture the Flag
War Games
War Games is the one that stands out, since it provides different objectives for each team, changing dynamically as the ebb and flow of gameplay changes. One example - in the map "A Heated Rivalry", Whiskey Company is striking from the jungle in an attempt to cripple a Wolfpack geothermal station by destroying the main powerline. On "Spire", Whiskey Company has to infiltrate a Wolf Pack communication outpost and work to destroy a crucial communications tower before Wolf Pack can call in reinforcements.

Thanks again to m0dus for his great theme. And a special thanks to Bishop for making a great game.

After watching the 4-part making of last night, I'm interested in this title. The T-Rex battle looks fucking awesome, they really nailed the animation looks like to me. I'll probably get it on the 360, seeing as how it looked better in the demo.

...near future?

Anyway, I enjoyed the 360 demo. GREAT 5.1 sound, nice colors, particularly nice looking dinos, framerate felt a bit iffy and controls a bit floaty. Will buy, but not for $60.

wish the framerate was as good as the game, really wanted to like it but just can't. great art and graphics, nice sound but not gonna buy it anymore after that demo

I'll wait for full game impressions on this one.

The demo was "meh" at best. The narrow FOV, overdone motion blur, and annoying headbobbing soured the game for me.

I was kind of up and down on the demo.

The cave was a pretty bad place to start the game off.

The shotgun lacked punch, the aiming sensitivity felt wonky, the dinosaurs were overpowered when in groups (I'm up! I'm down again. I'm up! I'm down again. I'm up! Down again, fuck) - they really should've been given a basic slash or bite attack that doesn't break the gunplay - and it was a little hard to tell when they were alerted to the player or not. The dodge move works fine to avoid attacks, but the recovery time is too slow for the player and not slow enough for the dinos, so they're right back on you before you can wheel around and fire. The blood-red damage effect that clouds your field of view is a little too obtrusive when you're being attacked by multiple enemies as well. Needs tweaking.

Any game that incorporates stealth would help to have a stealth meter, especially in first person, when you can't really tell if you're still concealed as you edge towards the end of the tall grass.

The demo didn't really get fun until the soldiers show up oddly enough, and it ends just after you get the coolest weapon, the pulse rifle. Makes it kind of hard to make a judgement call on the game when so much was held back.

That being said, I'm still interested in playing through the campaign and co-op, especially with some of the review quotes stating the AI is comparable to FEAR, and the promise that some of the better weapons are Turok-style badass. Also, the potential for a POV patch to fix that UE3 zoom-in effect would really help.

I had fun with the demo. I do really like dinosaurs so that helps that they looked good.

I agree with the lack of punch of the shotgun though.

the demo was a waste of time and so will be the full game - i am really disappointed in turok. at least i hoped it would turn out mediocre - but eh - even that isnt the case. MEH

but i will download the theme, because m0dus themes are hurengeil!

I had a lot of fun with the demo too the one thing that drove me crazy were your stealth kills on the guys around you just not gory enough and didnt feel like you had any weight. Looked like I was killing a droid from star wars.

The feeling i got from the game is that they should've focused on what made the game cool. The knife and the Dinos.

So make it a survival stealth game, in sandbox environment. The shooter part of this game just feels unnecessary.

Turok does not need to be a sandbox game. I hate the damn obsession now that every game must be a sanbox game.

Anyway, have this preordered and it should be in tomorrow. I can't wait.

Last night me and my friend gave the demo a try. What we experienced was pretty underwhelming. Starting the demo in the cave really did not do much for me as everything was just way too dark.

Every encounter was the same: Dinosaurs would spawn out of nowhere and knock me over again and again. Even though my NPC buddy was close by, the dinosaurs were only interested in attacking me. There were times when I was getting knocked on my ass and he just stood there facing a wall.

The graphics felt pretty generic. I am currently playing through some other shooters and this game's visuals seem on par with the other 2nd-tier shooters on the 360 (Blacksite, Timeshift). My friend and I were laughing our asses off when the dinosaurs' bodies were clipping through objects in the world.

The level design is very limited and there are no branching paths or alternate routes. The forest level's visuals try to mask this, but it is pretty apparent that there is only one path to take through a level.

I am not sure if I am too sold on the art style. The "Gears of War" character designs do not seem to jive with the rest of the game and the universe that it is trying to present. This really does not "feel" like a Turok game.

I think I am going to pass on this one.

Nah, BUT after playing the original turok on an emulator you can't help but feel how slow this version of turok is, pretty ironic considering all the power these newer consoles have. :/

Does this game have the Tek bow like previous Turoks? If so I'll have to at least give the demo a spin to satisfy my love for bows in FPS games. For some reason bow weapons always feel nice and meaty when compared to guns (Thief, Half-Life 2 crossbow, Oblivion).

Awesome original post guys.

Lets keep this thread civil.
Don't look at me, I won't be moderating this thread. Just answering questions and talking about your moms' delicious home cooking when need be.

I'm 50/50 on picking this up after playing the demo yesterday. Cave was dark and lame, and went on a bit to long and like others I just kept getting knocked down. Once it opened up, I feel like I got a better taste of the gameplay, but I still came away underwhelmed. The transitions between the dino's animations seemed "jumpy" to me. On the plus side I felt the jungle environment was very good looking, the weapons felt satisfying, and the knife kills were alot of fun. The dino's looked really good to, pretty freaky actually. If the multiplayer and co-op are fun I can overlook some of the shortcomings and would pick it up @ $60.

This thread deserves to be stickied just for the fact how awesome the OP is....it should be an example of how to make an "Official" thread.

Are you guys at Propaganda going to or have already fixed the fov and extreme headbobbing? Give us options to turn on/off each option, at least?
Here's the thing - if you position the camera for SD and then crop for widescreen it gives you the impression of being in front of your location, but we tuned everything for widescreen.

That said, we'll look at the issue after wider release and make a judgment call then.

WTF? That's exactly why and its makes perfect sense. Why shouldn't GAF support the work of its long-time members?

Exactly. Chef & m0dus should make every Official Thread.
