Everquest did. Some of the boss fights were built around the fact that the boss was just going to kill random people and there's nothing you can do about it.Narag said:Seriously though, how many games have true instant death attacks that aren't counterable in some fashion?

Status effects need to be better used, but still. You can do a lot of preparation in MegaTen games to avoid getting nixed by an instant death attack. Still, there have been a number of times where I couldn't do said preparations (as in, they're not preparations that can be set out of battle), battle starts up, that spell flies off and it's game over. I'm not saying it's enough to make me hate these games. But it sure stings a little when it happens.Himuro said:So it's better to have status effects that are an after thought like in 99% of all other jrpgs, and that 1% falls into the SMT game category?
That actually sounds somewhat appealing for epic battles.Draft said:Everquest did. Some of the boss fights were built around the fact that the boss was just going to kill random people and there's nothing you can do about it.

It sounds epic until you are the guy who gets instaed, then it just sucks.Grayman said:That actually sounds somewhat appealing for epic battles.
Asheron's call had something similar in some raid like quests where the boss would "swallow" a player and they could attack it's stomach lining for awhile.
I'm not saying I dislike it. I'm saying it sucks when it happens. It's not realistic to limit yourself to a death prevention persona only, for example. And let's say you get to a new floor where you don't know they're there, battle starts up, enemy goes first, spell goes off and game over. Sure it doesn't happen all the time but you're not going to tell me you like it when that happens.Himuro said:I guess I like it this way because it keeps me on my toes.
What instant death in NMH?FlyinJ said:I absolutely loved No More Heroes. Until that third woman boss who insta-deathed you. I finally beat her after getting insta-deathed about 9 times in a row, took the game out of my Wii, put it on the shelf and vowed never to play it again.
Insta-death sucks.
Me too. If that was the case, saying "man up" or "stop being a bitch" wouldn't be satisfying enough.The-Switcher said:I assumed you were talking about NMH.
Ah well.
See this is what I'm talking aboutFlyinJ said:After you beat the 3rd boss into about 1/4 health, she started doing attacks that if connected to you would kill you instantly regardless of how much health you had left.
I hear later bosses did this as well, so I stopped playing.

Error said:I dont get the complaints, you get an item in Persona 3 called homunculus that basically protects the lead against any instant death spell/attack. you can also buy them in a store too... so no excuses!
in SMT3, well... that's another story.
it's a store where you can buy cards to raise your persona stats without having to level up, you dont buy with money I think but with gems and jewels.ItsInMyVeins said:I haven't seen any homonculus in the stores yet (?), and even if I had them it's still lame. Just like RevenantKioku pointed out; it wouldn't really be an issue if you teammates could revive the hero.
A little sidestep; how long is the game played normally? I'm flustered about getting up all my s.links and stuff.
Error said:it's a store where you can buy cards to raise your persona stats without having to level up, you dont buy with money I think but with gems and jewels.
Persona 3 is reaaaaaaaaaaaally forgiving with instant death compared to other SMT games.
Error said:hell persona 3 even lets you know what enemies have instant death attacks so you can protect against them before even attacking.
Error said:I dont mind instant death, it's only unfair if you arent paying attention. instant death means the game makes you take every battle seriously instead being like "yawn another battle?" I don't get the unfairness of instant death. it's only unfair if you dont have any way to get around it, which is really not true in Persona 3 case at least.
there are personas that have strong resistance or can outright null hama/mudo spells. for examples mythology beings like angels, archangels have very high defense against Hama type spells (hama=holy) personas that are more dark or evil, like Legion, Succubus, Incubus have high defense against mudo (mudo=dark) spellsItsInMyVeins said:Yeah, that store just opened up for me, but I haven't been able to get much there at all so far.
I don't really care what it is compared to the other SMT-games, instant death is still stupid no matter which one of the games you find it in as long as your teammates can't revive you.
Then I guess they forgot to mention it to me a couple of times!
And to protect against those attack you need the right personas?
