Release Date - May 6, 2008
Price - $49.99
Preface -

People often ask me, "hey, Amir0x, do you think any concept for Wii is good? I mean you sure do have a lot of bitterness!" That's true, a lot of things suck. But while everyone is trying to justify their poorly implemented waggle PS2 ports like Godfather and Okami, I sit back and wait for those developers who actually get the strengths of the platform - what strengths there are, anyway.

Before anyone says it, this game is nothing like JENGA. If you say it is like JENGA, I am going to fucking ban you for eighty nine weeks. Because if you are so dumb that you make such shitty comparisons, then clearly we can't expect you to add much to this thread.

What -

Boom Blox is like everything that is cool with being a kid, but with explosions. It's a full, ground-up wiimote concept, alluringly simple to learn, deceptively complicated to master - the sort of concept you're likely to get addicted to and stuck on for months.

Basically for the standard levels provided to you, there are lots of different blocks of varying color, weight and density. Your goal is to clear the stage of all the blocks. You may grab, blow them up or shoot at them with various objects to try to set off chain reactions which will, depending on your cleverness, get rid of things quicker. The game accurately measures the power you use for your throws and whatnot, which impacts precisely what type of damage you'll do. It's all very physics-heavy, and the result is lots of controlled chaos for a puzzle game.

This game has a pleasant art style that doesn't try too hard, it uses the remote in a simple yet effective manner which clearly couldn't be replicated on another system in any serious fashion, and doesn't act like the player is two years old and has the hand-eye coordination of a sloth.

What more can you ask for?

Well, LEVEL CREATION of course. This is like building blocks as a kid, only instead of pretending your godzilla stomping around to the feeble villagers discontent, you'll be tossing shit around to fuck with things. Good stuff.

So i guess everyone knows the rest. Support the games that try, people.

Pre-ordered (impressions all sound promising, looking forward to reviews). Three cheers for quality casual gaming. Hope the game doesn't get buried because the release window is brutal.

THIS GAME COMES OUT NEXT WEEK, GAF. THAT'S RIGHT, NEXT WEEK.

1up Yours and NWR's impressions got me very interested. Hope I can afford it after this week. (And I'm not even getting GTA yet... no 360, but the stimulus may change that.)

Totally freakin want that. The next game I'll buy for the Wii, and that will be before mario kart.

Seriously, physics based game with "build your blocky thing", that can't go wrong.

And 400 levels, they're not bullshitting us with the content.

I, too, cannot wait for this game. I'll get it from gamefly, play it for a few hours, send it back and then complain about it on gaf.

so headtracking y/n?
dunno about that but i suspect the appearance of somewhat rectangular objects prone to exploding in that game.

i'm picking it as soon as i clear my backlog. end of may maybe
who am i fooling

I watched some videos but I'm wondering if the difficulty ramps up. What I've seen are mostly simple challenges with a few block towers and I haven't seen anyone do anything wrong in this game. I'm also wondering about the framerate and possible framedrops, the Wii couldn't keep up with the physics used in Elebits for example.

Are there gameplay videos of this anywhere? For a game coming out next week with EA and Spielberg behind it, the hype for it on any level, mainstream or hardcore, seems next to nothing.

I've HEARD lots of positive praise and watched the old trailer, but I'm still not convinced enough to throw down $50 for it.

Thats exactly what I did with Okami. 10 boring hours wasted on that game. I'm looking forward to Bloom Box with some fun local multiplayer.

^yeah, interesting that he's developed an original game rather than a movie tie-in, is this a quick money maker or is he serious

lots of money at the minute is being pumped into the videgames industry by big media/movie companies

All aboard the hype train!!

Is if $50 good? I don't know. I only spent quality time with the multiplayer. But I'll tell you this: next week, me and my gf are gonna go through a lot of beer and Boom Blox.

How is the 4p? That's what I'm really excited about--so few good 4p local multi games this gen (Rock Band, Calling All Cars).

That's really where the fun is. Because everything in Boom Blox is so random thanks to the physics, the game changes pretty quickly. That's kind of why I think this is a perfect party game; the gameplay will get more and more ridiculous as your ability to judge physics disappears. :lol

So, the general consensus is "Yes, this game IS worth $50!" I expected it to be considered not meaty enough and thus too expensive.

This just jumped from my "Wait for bargain-bin list" to my "Buy it next week as soon as summer break starts" list.

So basically its bad Jenga.

Feel free to ban me Amir0x, cos even if its a joke the comparison is retarded, this game will be mine. :D

I'd definitely like to play this game. This and Deadly Creatures fulfill my "completely original IP and great vibes despite everything against them in the nasty world of videogaming" quota.

Is there any possibility of trading created stages to other players via webbernets?

EDIT: There's no blue WFC logo on the box, I suppose not. Oh well. :(

Goddamn it.

I am now stuck between:

-Mario Kart Wii
-TWEWY
-Boom Blox
-Blast Works

...for my next game.

This thread didn't help, it put Boom Blox back up on the list. :(

I had thought user-created levels could be traded, at least I thought I heard that somewhere a bit back. Guess not =\

Oh alright I'll buy it
eventually

Only because you're so insistent, Amir0x! And I like 'splosions.

This looks much better than I expected when I read the original press release. The graphics aren't horrendous... and the game play seems to actually be a good fit for motion sensing, unlike the many PS2 ports Wii has received which simply replace button presses with arbitrary waggle (completely pointless... the fact that these games constitute the majority of Wii's library makes me regret buying the system). I'd much prefer if Steven Spielberg's involvement brought a "hardcore" ground-up game to Wii, but at least this seems fun. I'm glad that I won't be getting Mario Kart and Wii Fit, at least not until they drop in price significantly.
