Great DS sales. Sony's in a bind with the either releasing more PSPs or taking fewer losses.

No, the sales are from Thanksgiving holiday. NDS will drop off after the holidays.

Oh, I didn't know the Japanese celebrated thanksgiving. You learn something new everyday.

@DS numbers

GBA has taken a huge dive in Japan too (for a holiday season, though 80,000 is almost as much as the PSP sold). Seems that regardless of what Nintendo says, as far as everyone is concerned, DS is the GBA's successor.

I think 1-3 weeks from two major portable launches is a bit soon to determine things like this. I'd also say there's a difference between choosing a GBA-compatible DS over a GBA and "DS is the GBA's successor".

Well, If I'm buying it to play Gameboy games I must consider it essentially a Gameboy, no?

For comparison:

1 PS2 metal gear solid 3 snake eater (limited edition it includes) 548,186
2 PS2 Tales of Rebirth 335,014

Previous games first week:

Metal Gear Solid 2 - 456,747
Tales of Destiny 2 - 498,142

No more than we'd consider the PSX the successor to PS2 or the PS2 the successor to the DVD Player.

DS sales still not dropping in japan... how long will weekly sales remain around 200K?

I don't follow, maybe that's a mis-type.

I wouldn't consider the PSX the PS2's successor because the PS2 is the successor to the PSX. Furthermore, the PSX does NOT play PS2 games (it's not FORWARD-compatible) so I'm not sure where you are going with that.

The fact is that the DS and the GBA are made by the same company, they are both the same kind of device except that the former is more advanced. The DS subsumes the GBA functionality so it's pretty clear that if I want a GBA+ I'll get a DS, regartdless of what the official word is. It maybe early, but I think it's likely many others feel the same way.

Probably for another 3, maybe even 4 weeks. The selling season continues until late January. After that, depends on what kind of software they can release for the system.

He's referring to the PSX: a badly designed bit of hardware from Sony that has a PS2, DVD burner tivo-like thing, not the original PlayStation console. :p

Ah, thanks Dragona. I get his analogy now.

I heard the hardware was really badly designed, but the interface and software was created by some master programmers.
