So last night after work, I had to do a presentation at uni and as a consequence, had to catch the 11pm train. I had just missed the 10pm train and had to wait an hour for the next one. I just did what I always do and whipped out my DS Lite to play some Ouendan 2. After about ten or fifteen minutes of failing hard at Sambomaster on hard mode, a group of girls walks by.
Now, at first look, it seemed as though one of them was wearing a green dress of some kind. I look up and this girl looks at me. She gives me the eye but as they walked closer, I realised that this "green dress" she had on was in fact a school jumper pulled down over whatever bottom garment she was wearing with a belt on top. As I'd prefer to avoid a visit by the Chris Hansen fairy, I just went back to playing Ouendan.
Anyhoo, I was continuing to fail at Sambomaster when I noticed that someone was standing in front of me. I paused the game, looked up and it was the girl who'd been looking at me before. Up close I realised that this girl would have been fifteen or so underneath her "scene girl" hair and makeup. Sixteen at a stretch. I guess she must have wearing hot pants or a mini skirt underneath the jumper because it looked like she was wearing it and nothing else.
She was smiling and obviously wanted to say something, so I pulled the headphones out of my ears. "Hi!"
"Um... hi."
"Um... can I please borrow 80 cents?"
"80 cents? Yeah, sure." I had a lot of change in my wallet, so I pulled it out and gave her 80 cents. As I did so, I said "And hey, you know what? You can keep it if you like. No need to pay me back."
"OH THANK YOU!!!" And here comes the weird part. She leans in and gives me a hug. Chris Hansen's face flashed across my mind and I tensed up. She held for a few seconds and when it became apparent that I wasn't going to let go of my DS to hug her back, she let go and ran off to her friends. They then proceeded to buy chips from a vending machine.
It wasn't until later that I even thought to ask the question. What were these girls doing out in the city on a Wednesday night? Some of them, like the hugging girl, were stil wearing bits of school uniform so it's not like they can sneak into any pubs or clubs. What in the hell was this girl doing wearing a school jumper, eyeliner and mascara and little else while accosting full grown men in train stations?
It makes me sound like an old man, but if I had a daughter and I found out she was doing that, she would be grounded until the end of high school. Also, what the hell is this girl thinking? She flirted with and hugged a strange man in a train station. What if I were some kind of sick pedo freak? She doesn't know.
Someone, please. Explain this to me.
