$50 per 13 episodes is kind of a bargain for a stateside release of an anime, unfortunately. The MSRP for 4 episode DVDs is usually $29.99, which is absolutely fucking ridiculous.

If you bought the whole show to date at that price ($49.98), you're looking at $1360.99. :lol

354 / 13 * 49.98

Possibly plus tax.

$50 per 13 episodes on a slow-paced shonen with a bazillion episodes?

Yeesh.

Its better than most anime DVDs. 4kids was selling their dub of One Piece at $40 for only 3 episodes a pop :lol

That is what amazon is for

Er, sorry, I'm gonna have to pass on 13 episodes for $50 when the series is halfway done at best with 350 episodes... If they bundle 26 episodes for $20, then we're somewhere reasonable.

Funi said they'd hope to release a set every 6-8 weeks, but it doesn't seem like it from the solicitations they'd done.

Amazon has the One Piece set for $37. The uncut Bleach boxset was perfectly priced, in my opinion. $27 (at Walmart right now) for 20 episodes. Although I think I paid about $30 for it.

But yeah, even $37 for 13 episodes is better than what a lot of companies are still trying to get away with. $20 for 3-4 episodes is highway robbery.

If you guys actually think you'll be buying this for 50 dollars at stores, then you're quite mistaken.

True, nobody except the local stores and maybe already overpriced places like FYE is going to charge the MSRP. Best Buy, Target, etc will all be around the same price as Amazon.

$37.49 @ Amazon, meaning no tax. There's your best bet, bar none.

Then the show will only cost you the low, low price of... $1,020.88. Holy shnikees.:lol

Overall I really enjoyed Funimation's dub of One Piece. The voice actors are all quite good (they only low point is Chopper's VA) and the dub is very faithful to the original. Plus english opening/endings is pretty sweet.

I'd buy DVDs of series I really like. I bought FullMetal Alchemist. Entire series (4 box sets) + Movie cost me about $150. I will buy Death Note once it's on sale and they release it as season sets instead of 4 episodes = 1 volume. One Piece is the third show I'd have liked to buy, but honestly, to own the entire series would be way too much for me. Even if I went with $20 per 26 episodes like I would like, and there were 700 episodes, I'd be paying $540. That's pretty reasonable in my opinion. 13 episodes for about $35 is $1890. Sorry, not gonna happen =/

I prefer it to the Japanese version. When it comes to western stuff like this, I'd rather watch it in English than Japanese.

I just got my FMA at FYE >.>; Yeah, it was full price which sorta blew, but it was Buy One Get One so still 50% off + shipping. But I also got hit by customs for $10 :( Total was $70 for Season 2 (Part 1 + Part 2).

I have hong kong boxsets.
That totally defeats the purpose of buying them. I could make better DVDs than those for less.

Animes that long require you to:
1) choose not to be a collector, and just rent them
2) be super rich
3) be willing to go into credit card debt for entertainment
4) be a pirate

I refuse to do option 3 or 4, option 2 does not apply, so Netflix ftw?

Also, what I saw on Cartoon Network of this show made me think it was absolutely retarded, and not in a enjoyable, funny way. The rap opening didn't help. But fuck it, I'll give it a shot.

That was the horrible 4kids dub of One Piece. Funimation's dub is actually good.

As for the price, I'm sure Funimation will eventually make huge boxsets that will eventually be cheap on Amazon. So give it more time and you may be able to afford the series

I have to say, I think Luffy's voice is perfect in that Zoro video.

If those clips I posted don't interest you, I'm not even sure if One Piece is for you.
Idunno... they're all from the first 30 episodes. Only the one with Shanks was any good. The series didn't get good for me until the Sanji arc. Nami arc was awesome. Then Arabasta was amazing "watch from morning until night to catch up" goodness. Skypiea was shit. Water 7 was as good as Arabasta.

For all those interested, seriously get past the first 30 episodes before you judge the show. They're godawful. But the series turns into one of the greatest shows I've ever watched afterwards.

I picked this up when we got it in about a month or so ago (we got it really early), and I am pleased with it. I like the new dub actors well enough, and if I didn't, the JP track is there as well. The subtitles are good (better than Roof/Solon/Sanji/Crook Bu shit on the HK boxes) as well.

The MSRP is steep, but imo it's worth it because I like the series, and it's making up for not having a single-disc release. It's easy for Funi to do the DBZ season boxes so cheap, because they already made a killing off the single discs and old black box sets before. Same goes for FMA.

I think they took this pricing because Viz has had success with Naruto boxes giving a similar amount of episodes for that price, but OP lacks the TV presence that Naruto has. Prince of Tennis boxes have a similar amount of episodes as well, but are priced slightly cheaper... but Viz isn't releasing any more boxsets for that series. I'd rather pay and have the series finish, provided Funi sticks with it.

I've just been pushing it when customers ask what's good. They'll usually say what JayDubya said, about having watched the 4Kids hackjob, or they'll dislike the character designs. It's a really good series if you give it a chance, but it is a timesink.

Buy it when Deep Discount DVD has its semi-annual discount sales period. One should happen in June. $30.74 * .8 = $24.59

I'll have to pass. I've got all 354 current episodes, um, locally already. :) Still, this is definitely one of my favorite animes ever. The humor makes this show (Usopp!). It starts slow, but once they make it to the Grand Line, things get way more interesting. Still, I might buy the DVD just to support it.

I'm not sure, but last I heard it was still Zolo
As of the most recent volume (#17), he's still Zolo. I'm guessing that Viz isn't going to bother swapping his name.

What's up with One piece on cartoon network? Did they outright cancel it or is it just on one of those hiatuses?

They canceled it :(

Funimation is still trying to get it worked out though. But for now One Piece survives through DVD! (coughbuythiscough)

sons of bitches! Just when we got the direction the show utterly needed too. Curse 4Kids for practically making it impossible for America to fall in love with this series and bringing us to this path.

And yes, it does seem like the only possible way for OP to continue on here is to buy the dvds. I'll try to help out the cause

4kids ruined the one piece brand in america.

I've encountered way too many people who don't realize that there is a difference between 4kids and funimation's dub. Even with preexisting fans :(

Wow, I knew this stuff was overpriced but 50? And people wonder why there's pirating.

50 bucks for over 5 hours of footage is overpriced? People seem to have no problem paying 60 bucks for 6 hour games... I swear I'm going to fucking ban every single person from now on who uses "overpriced" as an excuse for piracy. I mean it.

And people regularly spend $40 on 2-3 hour movies

Don't be stupid. Your analogy is terrible. If people had to pay $50 for the 6-hour first CHAPTER of a game, and they already knew that they were going to have to buy ~30 more chapters at that price to experience the whole thing, then people would be equally upset.

It isn't about the price tag of this one box. Everyone knows and agrees that $50 ($38 on Amazon) for a season of TV is reasonable. Well, most everyone. The problem is that One Piece has run for the equiv. of 27 seasons already, and isn't even winding down. That's a much bigger investment to own the whole run than say... Friends or even Simpsons.

As a HUGE One Piece fan myself, I'm still on the fence about picking this up. The show has given me countless hours of entertainment, but it's all been via fansubs thus far. I wanna support the show by actually paying for it for once, but I'd be happier if it were even like 24 episodes per box. Maybe subsequent releases will be.

So it is a bad thing that the show is long? Ridiculous. You just buy what you want and stop when it becomes too expensive. Economically you will eventually reach a point when the price is greater than your wish for the story to continue, and that is where you would stop. The only reason you are even arguing that the series is too long is because you regularly get it for free.

Ummm... noooooo? I don't even know how to respond to this, I guess. Anyone that thinks it makes sense to release 13-ep sets for a series that is likely to run ~450-500 eps can't be reasoned with.

Ultimately, Funimation is very very close to losing this One Piece fan's money because there's not more episodes in the set. It's literally the only thing holding me back. And I think I'm not alone.

Again, it's like a developer charging $50 for Chapter 1 of a game, with the consumer already knowing there's 30-40 chapters coming. People like ME balk, and people like YOU say "wtf you'd rather they planned something less epic?!?"
