Even though the game lets you play as one of three different characters, the differences between them are somewhat negligible. Judged on only three different attributes – speed, health and number of grenades they carry – Wolf, Coyote and Fox don’t play or feel much different. This might have something to do with the fact that they all have the same weapons to choose from. A little tweaking to make them more unique would have made playing through the game multiple times with each of them a little more worth it. The one advantage to this interchangeability though is that when you’re playing co-op with two of your friends, there’s no good reason to fight over who gets to be who.

Although the game suffers from this repetitiveness and troublesome sameness, that doesn’t mean that what’s there’s isn’t fun. The left-stick move right-stick shoot mentality is not only a traditionally fun one but keeps your thumbs from callousing over from too much button mashing. You can choose from one of three weapons by picking up a certain type of ammo box. There’s the wide-angle spray shot, the rapid-fire machine gun burst, the slow but powerful rocket launcher and the flamethrower, each of which is upgradeable with the classic “Pow” pickup. All of these have their advantages, but you’re better off sticking to one the whole way through, unless of course you’re playing co-op in which case everyone can take something different.

Vehicles come into play as well, but are way more fun in co-op mode. Are you seeing a pattern here? The game is simply way more fun playing with friends than all by your lonely, and if you do play by yourself you’ll be way challenged to complete the game solo, even on the lower difficulty levels. It just doesn’t scale down that much. Commando 3 definitely has its appeal, but a lot more could have been done to extend the gameplay or just make it feel more varied. Bosses are pretty redundant as well, and fighting them is more of an avoidance game than anything. I guess that’s staying true to the classic nature of the game, but if you’re going to upgrade the visual presentation this much, why not put that same effort into the overall game?

Final Score: 7.0

Closing Comments
In a crowded field of throwback arcade shooters on XBLA, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 just doesn’t stand out. The nostalgia of the Commando name isn’t enough to carry this one beyond the ordinary, and the lackluster graphics and generic art style don't help either. As arcade shooters go, Commando 3 isn’t a bad game, but it's just nothing special. Overall, we can't help but be disappointed.

IGN Ratings for Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 (X360)

6.0 Presentation
The logos, menu layouts and pause screens are well-done, but the character art kills the overall package.

6.0 Graphics
Sorry folks, this one just doesn't catch the eye. Environments are nothing special, attention to detail is sometimes lacking, and did we mention the character art?

7.5 Sound
There's jazz flute playing during the intro, if you're into that (you know who you are). Music is good throughout, though.

7.0 Gameplay
Standard stuff here, but it all works well enough. Repetition sets in quickly though.

5.0 Lasting Appeal
Even during co-op play, we got bored pretty quickly with Commando 3. With no eye candy and fairly ho-hum levels, there's just not much to come back to.

5.9
Mediocre OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

please don't put "commandos" in the thread title. :D I was hoping for some tactical stealth awesomeness when I saw it :(

Xbox Live is being invaded by arcade shooters. Ikaruga flew onto the scene in April; Assault Heroes 2 released in May; and Sierra introduced Aces of the Galaxy, a new spacefaring shooter, just this week. It's in this crowded field that Capcom is debuting Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, a sequel to the company's classic scrolling shooter.

Ikaruga and Aces aren't even in the same bloody FIELD as AH2 and WOTB:C3 Geddes! What sort of stupid comparison is that? Don't think you're percieving patterns when there aren't any!

Commando 3 is far more fast paced than Assault Heroes, and I've had far more fun playing it on Partnernet than I have of Assault Heroes 2, frankly.

I was going to buy this based on its name alone but after reading the comments from reviews etc I don't think I'll bother. Looks like the only thing it has in common with the original is the name.

Will there be a demo on PSN?

Day 1 for the beta and I get a free xbla game to boot :lol :D

That is the most disgustingly ugly character art I've ever seen from Capcom.

Remeber when Japanese companies used to make their own games?

You won't be able to at this rate.

I'll wait for GAF impressions to decide but the 5.9 review isn't really getting me excited for this....

IGN scores shouldn't be taken seriously at the best of times, and certainly not for downloadable titles.

In my experience, IGN usually rates too high rather than too low.

Yeah. Definitely dissapointed after opening thread.

Too high for certain full price titles certainly. However, they (and others) seem to review downloadable titles by the same yardstick as full price titles, so of course they're going to seem lacking in comparison. One of the many reasons MS' "65% delist" strategy is so flawed.

Is it wrong if I was more excited by the graphics of the old game in the trailer than the new one, they just seem horrible? I'll probably get this, just for Street Fighter and I imagine my friend who buys nearly every arcade game will want a co-op player.

anyone have first hand experience with it?
I almost bought it last night but downloaded the civ: rev and battlefield bc demos, then took advantage of double xp weekend on cod4

i... like it, alot. i got it on psn yesterday, but it claims that it auto saves, after the first boss i quit and had to do everything all over again :S

in terms of PSN games im waiting for:

Wipeout HD
Bionic Commando Reamed
SOCOM Con
Quest 4 Booty
c'mon Insomniac, CONFIRM
possibly SFHD Remix

This game is actually allot of fun. I got into a few co-op games last night and I'm doing a score run right now. Its miles better than that rocketmen crap they threw at us last month.
BTW when dealing with IGN down loadable game scores, subtract the difference between 10 and the PJM score and add that to every score and you are about right.

Those screens in the OP are ugly as hell. It looks a lot better than that running on my TV. And I disagree with IGN. It's a 7 or 8, not a 5. It's not AAA material, but it's much, much better than Rocketmen.

I agree. XBLA games are almost universally undervalued. For example, they gave Geo Wars an 8.

I don't understand the negative reviews. The game is a lot of fun, and controls well (well, the vehicle controls are a little odd..) And I haven't even tried the co-op yet. Hell, it even supports 4:3 for us ghetto SDTV folk.

Which consoles was commando 2 on? I never played it, i played the hell out of the arcade / nes one though.

It's more like negative review than reviews. Everyone else is giving it pretty good scores.

I haven't played co-op yet, but I don't use the jeep in single player. I assume in multiplayer the second player can aim the turret, which would make it a lot more fun to use.

I posted in the PSN update thread some of my impressions.

I've played it multiplayer offline and online so far and I've really liked it. It's pretty, it's fast and it's fun.

Network code seems MUCH improved over prior Backbone efforts. There's been no slowdown and no disconnects in any of my games so far.

I'd give it a solid 8/10, especially for multiplayer on the same couch.

Not for downloadable games. I think they originally gave a 4 to Gripshift :lol . They apparently rereviewed the game when it came out for XBLA and bumped the score to 7. The original score was a disgrace.

No, I DEFINITELY remember the score being a 6-7 for IGN when it came out, which is still a disgrace.

Also, me and two other guys played this local multiplayer yesterday. Not all that fun, and the glitches SUCK. (nothing like the screen getting stuck and not allowing you to move, thus ending the game entirely, and having to restart at level one).

Also, I hate sharing lives. Gah.

This looks an awful lot like Rocketmen. Did they address the problems with that title, or did they carry over?
i played the demo of rocketman and the first two levels of commando. so far commando >>>> rocketman in terms of how the gameplay feels.

based on my limited playtime with commando, my main complaints lie with slow weapon advancement and the character art style. other than that, it's a solid game - nothing that will necessarily blow you away, but still solid.

I almost got owned. For whatever reason, I had got it in my head that this was Bionic Commando, and I was really amped all week for it. Once the update came out, I went to purchase, and before checking out decided to go back and buy more stuff. I happened to take a look at the preview and was surprised to see Commando the top-down shooter and not Bionic Commando the side-scroller. Oh dear, and images of a broken Rocketman danced through my head. I quickly dropped it from my cart.

Someone tell me it's worth a buy. I am gonna be so pissed if it ends up as awful as Rocketman. They look way too alike for my comfort. PEACE.

I barely played the game for five minutes before I found an area to camp and kill an infinite supply of respawning enemies.

You don't even need to beat the first level and with enough patience you can be on the top of the leaderboards. :lol

I regret buying this piece of garbage.

Yea, shit like that just won't cut it. I guess I won't be buying this, afterall. Which is unfortunate because it looks so damn GOOD. Ah, well.
