N+ Level Pack Contesque: Part the First

By M&R | July 16, 2008

The first XBLA N+ level pack, featuring 150 “easier” Singleplayer levels and 50 “regular difficulty” Co-op Multiplayer levels, is coming very very soon — by the end of July!

To celebrate, it’s time for another contest-like-event, or to use our newly coined term, a “cont-esque”!

We decided to run the contesque from the blog because it’s pretty simple, so here goes. This event is open to everyone, worldwide, who wishes to enter. The rules are straightforward: below is a list containing 32 level names. 24 of these are from the first N+ Level Pack PDLC, and 8 are level names which do not appear in N+ PDLC0 — level names we would never actually use for various reasons (style, cliche, etc). We’ll reveal these reasons with the winners, next week.

All you have to do is email PDLC0 [at] metanetsoftware [dot] com subject line: “Contesque 1 Submission” with the numbers of the 8 level names you think are fabrications. You can email the names of the levels as well, but please be sure to email the corresponding numbers.

The contest will be open for one week only, so get those submissions in fast! Only one per person, so make sure it’s your best guess. The top three will each receive a copy of N+ for XBLA, and the person with the most correct guesses will also receive a copy of the Official Xbox360 Magazine UK (Issue 35, July 2008) containing exclusive N+ gamerpics and themes, and an official N+ Moleskine notebook. You can see an image of the notebook and magazine here.

Awesome, I was just wondering when this would show up.

Any word on how much?
It seems like they had tossed around an estimate of $2 back when the game first came out, but I could be remembering wrong.

good stuff I will be playing.

One thing I was wondering about is they stated they were working on put a proper solution for level sharing in an update (they had is in rigged in before launch but it was removed), any news on this update?

$2? Sold. I haven't even finished half of the main game though...

As much as I loved the game I don't think I can support the devs due to their attitude not only towards fixing their game (the fact they wont make changes because it costs them money) but also towards other devs and XBLA in general.

Good to see easier levels being released. As much as I love the game I can't seem to get passed the last level in set #14 :lol

Yes, damn it's one thing that let's N+ down on xbla is no way to share files without playing it with a friend, you can't save it or anything apart from trying it out online with the person who is hosting it.

If nintendo allow it on the DS then why can't microsoft, oh wait they want DLC to sell 10% better.

What's all this about?

I read that whole thing, and it came off as their way of repping the indies and letting them know that they didn't sell out to MS. They had a hidden agenda for their reviews, which was to put the spotlight on other talented indie devs that haven't gotten their break yet. I appreciated their intentions but I didn't care for their methods.

They are still fixing bugs and they mentioned that they spent most of their development time working on the netcode so it sounds like they are getting diminishing returns from it. I would rather see them put that time into making more levels, which is what they have been doing. I don't think you can make the case that they are abandoning their fanbase here.

But that drama shouldn't take away from the game they made, which is the only 2D platformer I'd use in the same sentence as Super Mario.

No, they're just focussing on what gets them more money easiest. What irked me was that even though their game was a far bigger success than anyone expected they still kept the same penny pinching attitude.

But anyway... like Shard said this is best left in the past. I don't have any recent reason to hold their attitude against them. :D

As much as this is going to sting, about 90% of the games on there are garbage that I would never buy. I downloaded the thing today and it is pretty fun. I bet they make the last stage hard as hell just because.

Not going to argue that there's a lot of junk on there... but 90% is well off. Someone ran the metacritic numbers on them at one point and there was a pretty good spread.

Agreed, and one man's garbage.....

My father loves all the old ass arcade games people seem to hate, and my wife loves the puzzle games, and my daughter loves the kiddie type games.

In having so vast a selection, there really is something for everyone, but not everything will please just one person.

I would say that the ratio of good/bad games on XBLA is likely to be very similar to the ratio for full retail games. There are lots of games on XBLA that aren't the type of games that I really like, but I certainly wouldn't call them crap.

As for N+, I was one of the winners of the "Pick the Level Names" contest. I hadn't bought the game yet so this works out pretty well... although I might need to go buy a new controller now to replace the one I will inevitably break. :D

Very fun game. Tried the single player and didn't see what all the hullabaloo was about but then tried the multiplayer with a friend and I completely got it.

Heh, this game always amazes me with the realization that one extra player can turn deaths from being "throw-your-controller-across-the-room frustrating" to being straight-up hilarious.

(Not that the single player is bad, by any means, but frustration sets in a lot sooner when you're playing by yourself.)
