NHL 09 online mode trailer (6vs6, 50/team)

They've announced 6vs6 previously, but this trailer show some really cool stuff:
Trailer

I haven't read too much about it except the first previews, but here are some of the stuff they say:
- 6vs6, each one having its own vision control camera.
- 50 players can share a team, and you create your own team
- You create 'you', with your name on the back, gaining exp for stats.
- The leaderboards isn't only "amount of wins", but also who has most stats in defensive skill, offensive etc
- Huge tournament (see below)

Anyway, it sounds all really cool. Will be fun to have up to 50 players sharing the same team, meaning that if you do a bad game - you're out!

NHL 2012 = 25 players in each team, 4 lines, having you sitting on the bench 25% of the time?

Here's a Q&A about the online mode:
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/sports/nhl09/news.html?sid=6194826&mode=recent

Most interesting stuff:
GS: Will you be able to create EASHL leagues? How will they work? How many teams will be able to participate in an EASHL league?

DL: The feature will have one league, the EA Sports Hockey League. All teams created are part of this league. The league runs off of the ranked ladder system where the best teams will be on top, but the ladder has been separated into divisions so you can see teams that are close to your team's skill level. You can go up and down divisions based on your team's performance. Getting into the first division is a big accomplishment for a club. In terms of points, you earn more by playing with more players in a game and by beating better opponents as opposed to beating low-ranked clubs with only two users from your club participating.

GS: Will there be a free-agency pool that already-formed teams can recruit from? Will you be able to see stats from a free agent's previous games? Will free agents age or improve their attributes as they play?

DL: The free-agent pool is anybody that is not assigned to a team. These players can play ranked online team play matches with their created Be a Pro characters to accumulate statistics and grades so you can see how good they are in the EA Sports leaderboards. Players not on teams can still improve the same way as the players on a club by playing games and performing well. They will earn online hockey cards giving them points to purchase attributes for their characters.

GS: Will you be able to play multiple seasons?

DL: There are no seasons in the EA Sports Hockey League. It is built through a leaderboard system and will have teams move up and down the rankings similar to versus gameplay online.

GS: How will teams that dissolve midseason be handled?

DL: Since there are no seasons, teams that have stopped participating for a period of time will be removed from the club rankings and removed from the server. The players on those teams will then become free agents again.

DL: When you first create your player, you will choose a player or goalie type. Based on this player type each player will start with a character template, which is their attribute set when going online.

There are 10 player types, each with their own template for attributes.

Forwards: dangler, grinder, playmaker, power forward, sniper
Defensemen: defensive defenseman, offensive defenseman
Goalie: stand up, hybrid, butterfly

As in our Be a Pro mode, we will have hockey cards, which a player can earn online. These cards give you points to spend on your player's growth in three areas: offense, defense, and athleticism for players and reflexes, puck control, and athleticism for goalies.

09 is my NHL buying season (I skip a year with sports games, I got NHL 2k7 for 360, missed the 2008 games) and NHL 09 looks like it is getting my £££s, my only complaint is that both EA and 2K seem to have hit a graphical wall in their NHL titles, but hey, as long as it looks passable (And they do) I wont mind.

The tournaments sound very cool, although I'm not sure what position to specialise, LW most probably :P

You're in for a surprise. The leap from NHL 07 to 08 was huge.

Hopefully the teams will have custom logos, not the recycled madden 06 shit.

Also, we should totally form Team GAF. tear the rink up!

I wonder if 6-on-6 would look like an actual hockey game, or just a bunch of retards running around not knowing wtf.

Depends entirely on who you play with, a well co-ordinated 6-man team could clean up, especially when you face 6 idiots who all want to be a 1 man show, and crash the net.

I think you'll find both, if I get NHL 09 this year I will make sure I learn the game machanics 100% before venturing online, at least giving any teams I play with a player who knows his position.

If we do a GAF team, I am so in. And I'll happily play defense because that's where my strengths lie in NHL 08. Can't wait to rocket some goals from the blue line!

Hopefully this game isn't littered with Reebok ads like the last game.

edit: I think I'm gonna play a full career as a goalie.

The way they're going with this Be-a-Pro stuff is great. If they really keep polishing it and differentiating it from the core game, it could be the biggest evolution is sports gaming since the Genesis days.

Rare you cane earnestly say something like that about a sports game.

My only concern is this:

"As in our Be a Pro mode, we will have hockey cards, which a player can earn online. These cards give you points to spend on your player's growth in three areas: offense, defense, and athleticism for players and reflexes, puck control, and athleticism for goalies."

I think it's cool to have MMO-style rewards to encourage people to play well, I just hope they don't go overboard by letting people go to crazy with the stats; I hope the possible improvements are only minor. Honestly you don't need to give people that incentive, people will put in 100+ hours just to get "achievement points." Just give people an avatar or a persistent rating or whatever and let them use their points for that imo. Or even just collect cards and get an achievement for that.

I hope hitting people is fun in this game. Mario Strikers proved to me that you can play a team sport with everyone on one team if they make defense fun. My siblings and I would play it and two of them would play on defense exclusively because it was so much fun for them to body check people.

So yeah I could get into playing defense if they make hitting people fun.

This is pretty fantastic. Can't wait

Saw this about the demo..

Demo - Yes we are doing one, and we are looking at giving you a small taste of Be a Pro, and a harder skill level. Before you guys ask though, we will have regular gameplay in the demo as well. So, Be a Pro and regular gameplay will be playable!

this game looks so amazing. definitely down for a GAF team.

im just worried about people wanting to be the best and not being a team player.

also, i hope the camera is a lot easier to work with than Fifa's Be-A-Pro. usually, in Fifa when I do be-a-pro, i just switch to a regular camera. i hope this game has that option as well.

and i joined that Friends List as Dr Tim Whatley

I'm in for the GAF team, prefer Right Wing. Consider myself a VERY above average player, sometimes even top tier. Will play any line. Also any position other than goalie, only cause I suck at it.

OK, so I've played perhaps around one to two thousands games of NHL before. Last time I played seriously was NHL04. I got this last friday and I'm thinking of returning it to the store. I do ok in offline but is getting schooled seriously in online.

Any tips on getting better? I can almost never get the puck from my opponent. Yet he manages to intercept every pass, knock me down or just steal the puck with ease. When I trie the poke check he almost always just skates around it.

Crap, I hate this game with a vengenance. :-(

Play multi-player team games and have some good people on your team. That's my strategy. :D And poke check, regular check, try the new defense stick control (which has been too much for me), try protect puck, etc.
