Bob's Game (DS) - Made By One Person Over 15,000 Hours And 5 years

For those into homebrew titles....

And here's a YouTube vid with annotations by the creator...

Here's what the creator had to say about it (via a post on Select Button)...

I worked on this game for Nintendo DS for 15,000 hours over 5 years, basically locked in a room the whole time, and this is first time I've shown anything.

Keep in mind it's just an asset demo, I'm trying to get some publishers interested with the fact that the whole thing is done, without putting up anything really revealing about gameplay.

I did obsess over the thing for five years, so just trust me when I say there's a lot of cool stuff I don't think has been done before, and I'm also pretty paranoid about getting ripped off, after having worked so hard on it.
I've heard a lot of horror stories about publishers, and the developers I've talked to have told me that the "it won't happen, don't worry about it" attitude is naive and exactly what they use to screw you over, etc.

I'm not sure whether to push it as self-promoting or not.
I do know that it's very possible that this is the largest single-handedly made game ever, which makes it quite relevant and a unique point of interest.
On the other hand, people who either don't know or care that this is relevant seem to get defensive towards this point and say "don't talk yourself up, you sound like you think you're so great."

For me, it's really about the passion I have for it, I'm proud of it, and I did what I did because I think too many cooks spoil the broth and all the good games are the ones designed by one guy with a vision.
In this case, it can't be any more pure or true than that.

"like an RPG but without the repetitive battles"

Plus if you get hit by a car, you die.

I like where this is going

Wow, this is one of those things you can't complain about unless you've done something better yourself.

Thus, I have nothing to say about it.

I thought it looked pretty nice, and that the graphics were especially detailed.
Now if only it had a publisher... and a better name.

Why doesn't he show gameplay if he's actually got it. Or even dialog for that matter.
Oh wait it's because he doesn't want anyone to steal his amazing, unseen ideas.

if he had hired a second guy he could have been done two and a half years ago.

The video looks pretty damn cool, but the guy sounds a little crazy.

Yeah, that's kinda how I feel about it. But still...

BOB HAS ASPERGER'S

BOB IS NEUROTIC

BOB IS PROBABLY MORE INTERESTING THAN HIS SHITTY PREDICTABLE WANNABE-ANIMU RPG GAME

I think its a given that the creator more than likely has autism. Which is not a knock btw.

for the record while i think it's neat that the guy apparently followed his dream to make the world's longer one-man videogame - asperger's or not - it's the stupidest thing in the world to suggest that someone not criticize something if they cannot do it themselves.

You're just saying that because you know that you could never do it!

amir0x, definitely. bob, in his video, points out that THIS IS THE GAME HE ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY AS A KID.

truth bomb incoming: kids -- human beings aged under 18 -- have NEVER, EVER had a good idea for a game, movie, or book. EVER. if, after 5 years past 18, you still think your game idea is good, you are a naive sheltered manchild who probably still plays smash brothers and has a cretinous fetish for mascots.

hence, bob's effort is indisputably a shitty game, by his own admission. logic prevails; fat flabby asperger's ulillilliatards go home in tears; drinky crow passes out in the street in a whiskey stupor having sodomized their mothers

Might as well, otherwise there wouldn't be much we could criticize.

As for the game, like it like a animal crossing style game? It is the Vibe I get from it.

Wait, 5 years? Wasn't the DS released in, like the end of 2004?

I would be willing to guess he started the development on the GBA, and then moved the code over to the DS. Getting the tools to program your own GBA games wasn't too difficult five years ago, I even gave it a shot myself.

5 YEARS OR 15K HOURS LATER BOB FINALLY POUNDS THE NAIL INTO HIS DICK

Drinky, crusher of dreams, hammer of delusions, tyrant of the grey reality.

Who knows, looked kinda cute and detailed, wish we had an example of the creative puzzles and interaction with players, for making a big point with that we saw nothing, not even a single chat with a NPC. There has been great games made by one person (hell, the whole industry is funded on this basis) so I have an open mind about this.

Drinky is probably right, but I wish it wasn't like that

what is this hate about? i saw the video and the game looks really good if you ask me. ok maybe there is no gamplay but must i remind everybody how many shitty games there are that look and play like shit. also the programming seems really really good, much better than most of the 3rd party games. i guess most of the haters are just jealous, erverybody knows how hard it is to make a game and most of us cant do it so show some respect.

Is it just me, or can you hear the guy playing that demo sucking his gums every few seconds during that video.

That was pretty gross.

Bob's pitch is about how long he spent making it, not what the actual game is (he goes so far as to say that he has to hide what it actually is, because it is so great that some one would steal it.)

I don't care about a game because of how much work was put in to it; I care about a game because of how good it is. From the video shown I have ZERO way of knowing how good this game is, all I have is Bob whining about how long it took him.

I'm not hating on the game, but I'm not giving him a pre-emptive GOTY just because he showed up either.

It's a youtube refference?

all interest lost.

This is a guy that has Asperger's Syndrome, he gets so obsessed with certain things. In this case he spent 500 HOURS TOTAL on Bubsy 3D for PSOne.

It really is very interesting to watch

oh, I think I read somehting that guy wrote once.

Man, I have spent enough time in special needs work that I am done being surprised by children with autism spectrum disorders.

looks good, but where's the gameplay demonstration?

500 hours on bubsy 3d; 15000 hours developing an animu action rpg -- what's the difference, i ask?

Well, 500 hours just in the 2nd level of Bubsy 3D, I don't even want to think the total number of hours spend on that game...

Granted he didn't show any of the meat of the game, but what he had looked solid from a tech perspective. It was a good tech demo, but didn't show anything of what the game actually is, which is kind of important when you're lobbying for publisher support.
