Sharpen your weapons: “Swords & Soldiers” is coming!

Ronimo Games announces their studio and the first competitive strategy game for Wii Ware: Swords & Soldiers.

UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS – August 15, 2008 – The developers of the original version of “de Blob” announce their new game studio Ronimo Games and their first title: Swords & Soldiers.

Ronimo Games is founded by seven developers in Utrecht, the Netherlands. As students the team was responsible for the original pc game “de Blob”. Being an innovative and fun game, “de Blob” became popular on the internet and was eventually picked up by THQ. The publisher bought the IP and will soon release the new version of “de Blob” for Nintendo Wii.

Fabian Akker, one of the co-founders: “de Blob was the eye opener for us, that we can make cool games and function as a good team. The game definitely gave us the opportunity to start our own company”.

The team is developing a new game for Wii Ware: Swords & Soldiers. Swords & Soldiers is a sidescrolling real time strategy game, in which three distinct factions battle for the powers of the gods. The game will feature a single player campaign and a competitive splitscreen multiplayer mode as well as several other game modes. Three screenshots are included with this press release.
Akker: “We always dreamed of designing an RTS and when Wii Ware came out we immediately figured that this was our chance.”

Swords & Soldiers will be the first competitive strategy game on Wii Ware and is scheduled for European, Australian and American release in Q4 2008.

I'm not a fan of RTS games usually, although they do make sense on the Wii over the other consoles. Still, great looking quirky art, I'm slightly interested (fridge allowing)

Looks awesome. Now let's hope for a better storage solution so I actually have the room for these WiiWare games.

Come on! Anything can have that same comic book look.
"Comic book" isn't an art style. You can put any kind of artwork in a comic book. Saying "Castle Crashers" refers to a specific visual style, and this game is reminiscent of it. Obviously it's different in several ways, but it's a more useful comparison than just saying "comic book," which could mean anything.

That genuinely looks very nice. Sweet job, Ronimo!

Roni ... mo.

Ron ... i ... mo.

I like that name. It's fun to say.

Looks pretty neat. I hope it turns into something great. We need more respectable developers in The Netherlands. Triumph, Two Tribes and Guerilla aren't enough.

Refers to Alien Hominid, refers to tons of flash games, refers to anything with hard outlines.

To give Castle Crashers the art style credit is like giving Halo the credit of creating the FPS genre.

The art direction looks decent, but I think the flash animation style is going to get quickly played out. I think this would make an amazing XBLA / PSN title.

like Castle Crashers before it, i'll need a LOT of convincing to be interested in a flash game

Except, you know, neither are flash games.

How did you get to the idea that it credits Castle Crashers with the style?
It just says it "looks like castle crashers", which is an apt comparison and description for a thread title considering Castle Crashers is something that's on the radar of most GAFers right now. Calling it 'comic book' is a lot more ambigious.

Really? Is saying a bass guitar looks like an electric guitar blaspheme because electric guitars didn't invent the form factor and style?

Its like wii cant have games....if it has them they should be on the sony/ms if they dont have them, you say they the wii doesnt have games.....:lol

Wow, this looks pretty cool. This also reminds me that I need to buy Castle Crashers (when it comes out), Geometry Wars, and Braid. :( Too much money.

I will definitely keep my eye on it, especially since its WiiWare. But I did have to delete OoT because of Strong Bad today. :(

I'm sorry but how in the HELL does that make ANY sense? Christ, I'm not even going to bother.

Looks like the game has a lot of style. Also a 2-D RTS should be interesting, rather than the top down perspective which we have ALL played before. I'm also glad to see a developer do an RTS on the Wii. I haven't kept up to see if there are others but when the Wii was first unveiled the first thing I thought was that it would be perfect for an RTS, something that consoles haven't done very well in the past. I'm remembering Starcraft 64 and cringing.

Looks great, but it's pathetic that it's taken almost three years since the unveiling for Wii RTS games to appear when it was immediately one of the most obvious uses of the remote.
