So, a week or so ago I was looking at the GAF Top 10 Anime Recommendation list. I had watched every single anime in that list, but there was one (I think it was 9th) that I hadn't even considered a good alternative: Hajime no Ippo. I was surprised since its a boxing anime, so how the hell could it be there? I had watched Slam Dunk and despised it...so there it was, a boxing anime that I never even considered worthy of watching.

I decided to give it a try.... two weeks later I am hooked to it and consider it the best anime I've watched, surpassing Gurren Lagann IMO. I am on episode 68 (almost done with the 75 episode series) and really, it's just the perfect mix of shonen anime: comedy, nonstop action, great GREAT characters and most of all.... fun and exciting. I am glad it even has a nice twist that surprised me around Ep 50 (can't remember the exact episode). It does have some weak moments (Balf-michi dude, seriously.... wtf) and some others, but otherwise it's just awesome and plain great.

Really guys, if you want to watch an anime... make this one. Spot on animation, awesome characters and just straight fun. WATCH IT!!! There's an OVA and a Movie, btu they take place after the series. I now wish they wold just make a new season since the anime covers till manga chapter 170 or something like that... and the manga has like 800 chapters :lol . It would make for a much better shonen anime than Naruto, Bleach, OP... etc. WATCH IT!!

Hajime no Ippo is so awesome, I really need to get into it again, I'm behind about 30 chapters. The best shounen, and Takamura is the definition of awesome.

I don't watch much anime, but I love Hajime No Ippo. Highly recommended.

The games (Victorious Boxers 1 and 2 on PS2, Victorious Boxers Revolution on Wii, and various imports) are great too.

I've always wanted to see this since I love the games on PS2 and am both an anime and a boxing fan in general.

That confirms it. I'm renting it this weekend.

Hajime no Ippo is awesome, but as far as shounen anime goes I prefer Yakitate! Japan.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann still bests both of them, but I'm glad you're enjoying this series.

How I love this series, and yeah that big twist threw me for a shocker as well. I remember I couldn't watch the series for a week after that cause I was so dumbfounded. :lol

Never did finish it because me and a friend lost th eepisodes.

Series didn't dick around, if there was a fight coming up... it was either in the next episode or in the same episode.

Oh yes it did!

That was one of the best things about it. Even if the next bout was weeks or months later, you got to it really quickly. None of that lame "training-for-10-episodes-to-learn-a-new technique crap".

The episodes that take place outside of the ring are enjoyable and never overstay their welcome.

Hajime no Ippo was the last anime I really enjoyed up until the new Golgo 13. It sucks the Geneon never released the final episode and OVA. The games are great, not only are they great licensed games, but great boxing games in general.

I want to see the Hawk/Takamura fight animated in any form. Whether it be an OVA or a continuation of the series.

It is absolutely the greatest anime ever made... let me take the time to post a birthday cake made for me by my GF.

What twist?

the anime was alright...

the manga seriously needs to fucking end though...it's become so long and drawn out that it's been shit stupid since the Sawamura/Ippo match...

Wish they actually included more Volg (Vorg?) in the series...by far the best boxer in the series imho.

I need to start reading the manga again... I got so busy studying that I stopped reading for fun.

i dont know what it was about that fight, whether it was that hawk was just a bastard that needed a beat down, or takamuras family problems, but its one of those matches that you have to read. the end damn near had me tearing up.

the series cant end until a certain match happens. i(and most ippo fans) wont be satisfied otherwise. and seeing as how that match may not come soon depending on how a current fight ends, we might have to wait a bit.

i think most ippo fans don't really care anymore, over out in Japan...atleast, there was a huge uproar when the miata/ippo fight got cancelled and people stopped really caring.

personally, i'm hoping ippo takes out ricardo martinez, volg takes the world champion title in the other boxing circuit, then a finale with the 2 duking it out, though...volg went up a weight class didn't he?

The twist being Ippo losing to Date.

I didn't really expect it at all, I kept hearing Ippo
would eventually win the title
so when the fight finally came I shrugged it off and figured this was the part, but oh how wrong I was. :lol

Nah it's not even on the same level as ippo, there are very few animes on that level to be honest with you.

Agreed.

I still felt robbed when it ended without tying up the big loose end though.

im not expecting it to be a title fight, just a culmination of all things. after all the titles are won and the matches are fought, a match between miyata and ippo to finish it off would be the best way to end it all in my opinion.

Don't see how that's a twist...i mean...don't most sports series that run long enough with a winning streak have some character that says something along the lines of "what he/she can gain from losing will far surpass that of just winning" etc etc? I mean...Initial D had it, Bamboo Blade had it, Ippo had a mention of it too i thought...amongst other series.

I still watch the final Ippo/Sendo fight about once a month. It's just so incredible, the music and animation just work so well.

yep... its a pump, i always listen to the soundtrack when lifting as well.

I didn't expect Ippo to lose at all. That defeat just hurt me for real. Especially when the "pump" rock music started playing I said "Hell yeah he's gonna reverse this!" but then fell. I really want to watch more of Ippo and catch up with the manga.

Was Ippo a huge success in Japan?

Ippo is one of my favorite anime. I want more of the anime, or at least a greatest hits OVA that features some fights from the manga. I am currently still current with the manga, and still am enjoying it a ton.

Best sports anime ever.

Back when I started boxing me and a guy where talking about anime in the gym. He recommended Ippo to me, and I watched the whole 70 something episodes in a few weeks. God I loved that series so much, I didn't want it to end. The way the fighting is portrayed is still unequalled, even DBZ doesn't touch it. Now I'm watching this every year or so, always gets me pumped so much! Loved the humor and love parts.

Takamuraaa!!

I still think best anime title belongs to GTO but Ippo is secod best anime ever.
nah... I switch them... GTO is the second best, but its very close to Ippo's greatness:p

I fucking cried at the last scene of the series...

I get close.

I wish this series got an official US release.

I'm positive it would be in the top 10 of GAF anime (on that poll) if not number 1 had it been easy to find and watch.

My name is Meier and I agree with this message.

p.s. Ippo fan from the beginning, was there during every release from Soldats (drawing a blank on the group that Soldats broke off from.. was it Baka Fansubs?). Soldats distro team represent!
