Reviews coming in!!

http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/t-mobile-g1-review-part-2-software-and-wrap-up/

As we alluded to in the hardware section, page load times lagged way behind the iPhone 3G when both devices were in 3G coverage, but once the pages were loaded, scrolling was smoother on the G1. Actually, maybe "smoother" isn't the right word here -- both devices scroll pages smoothly -- but the G1 was able to do so without resorting to temporarily filling your screen with a checkerboard pattern until it could get around to re-rendering your view.

Interesting. Engadget was the one posting the video and saying that web browsing was "choppier" on G1 compared to iPhone. Now they say it's smoother! Nice! I remember quite a few posts in here saying that was a deal breaker, what do they have to say now? :D

It doesn't look horrible, but that's the plainest goddamn phone I have ever seen.

Oh look it's another iPhone wannabe.
Something the market desperately needs... I hate the fact that over a year after the iPhone's release I can't find anything comparable in awesomeness.

Eh. Kind of lame, as in I was hoping for more.

If T-Mobile/Google smart they would have marketed this as a new Sidekick instead of the "G1". Sidekick G1 would work. And make the pop-up screen do that cool swivel thing that the Sidekicks do.

Just from a marketing standpoint, because the iPhone is taking away from the "cool teen/college student" market that the Sidekick has had completely on lockdown.

No one's going to get this "G1" thing over an iPhone.

And honestly, it doesn't even look cool. The UI looks plain and lame, and the phone design itself does too. The iPhone kicks its ass in both departments.

You are failing to understand what Android is all about. It's an Open Platform, anyone can develop for it and it's FREE. If you want the iPhone UI you can easily install it and countless other UIs onto your phone just takes someone porting them over.

Fuuuuck that.

i'm sure it's old news to those following Android more closely; i'm just a little surprised Google would be this bold.

Well it's not like gmail costs you anything. Just make a spam account and call it a day

The phone itself looks cheap.

Let's see this OS on a sexier phone and I'll be interested.

The phone is hideous, looks like it's made out of cheap plastic. I thought the bottom part was plugged into the device, it's nasty.

I thik it looks realy slick and functional. The one complaint I had about the iPhone (no keyboard) has been answered here and it still retains all the functionality of the iPhone and then some.

One feature I'm really looking forward to is the Barcode scanner - when you're shopping you can scan the barcode of a product and it will pull up all the lowest prices in the area using the built-in GPS system.

This is exactly how I feel. :(

I just want a slick looking Android-enabled phone. Isn't Android expandable to like, many different hardwares?

So basically, HTC has recently made a bunch of incredible looking phones, except for the one that mattered. Oh well, I'm stuck with my AT&T Tilt for another 6 months or so anyways.

The black one doesn't look nearly as bad as the white one in those screenshots, but it's still a huge letdown compared to stuff like the Touch HD.

Go look at google webpage. Google has never been about Flash but rather functionality. And th Touch line from HTC may look a bit better but the OS is horrendously slow and laggy from most reports. Comparatively the G1 is nice and fast and from some reports faster than the iPhone.

I agree with everything especially the iphone comments. the G1 looks a bit thicker than I imagined, due to the keyboard i am sure.

Windows mobile, makes your statement very wrong. There is nothing awesome about a phone with windows mobile on it.

By your own words, you haven't even touched wm 6.1, so you should probably stop spouting that in every cell phone thread.

My poor sister has WM with the HTC touch, I already sent her the link for the G1. Hopefully she gets it. I do not want to see her suffer anymore.

iPhone this and iPhone that

SORRY but the iPhone (front) is mainly covered by a screen, saying that it does not look as stylish as the iphone to me jsut does not make an ounce of SENSE

If the phone is off, what is so stylish about the iPhone, seriously? A motherfucking button?! LMAO!:lol

6.1 is not great but it works well enough. You really have to isntall other thing to make the experience more user friendly.

Seems to be going over well with the blogs and the critics, apparantly is small and slim and looks much better in person than the pictures.

All you iPhone zombies should look at the key differentiators about this device,
- open source software, meaning regular free updates for the OS
- Amazon DRM free tracks at discount from Itunes DRM free with a better selection.
- Hardware keyboard
- did I mention OPEN SOURCE meaning you don't have to hack anything on your device, its meant to be 'hacked' to do what ever you want with it.
- 3MP camera
- cut and paste

Anyway I am more of a Nokia fanboy because they still make the best multimedia phones but this device and further Android devices will be interesting to keep an eye on.

If you cannot see the quality difference between the G1 and the iPhone, you are blind.

I don't own an iPhone, but the G1 is an ugly mother...

The open source factor unfortunately won't cater to some of those who got the iPhone for the look/style" factor. To some the phone is a disaster due to the design...go figure!

(Sony Ericsson/Xperia fanboy here)

You make the kind of sense that doesn't. Why would you use a phone that is off? What I like about the iphone is that there isn't a built in keyboard that would make it thicker and ugly. The iphone has a slick user friendly interface and looks easier on the eyes than the blackberry or sidekick. That said, the andriod OS might be something in the right direction for those without an iphone.

Wasn't really talking about the factor, nor if the iPhone is a nicer looking phone..it's the fact that the iPhone is not a stunningly looking phone due most of it being covered by a screen. Ok it has a piano black back and some metal..but is that really straining the Apple designers brains?

No, the fact I was making is not that the phone is nice when off..that's a UI issue, it's of the design of the PHONE

Considering all the knock-offs that have come out since, I'd say the design was pretty well received. Also, the fact that most of the front is a screen was fairly unique at the time of it's release. Combine that, with the choice of materials, and squeezed into a small form factor, and you get the idea.

:lol Keep your ugly, cheap phones.

The beauty of the iPhone is the subtleness to it. The simplicity. That's the whole problem with the cell phone market, they throw shit together and it looks like a mess!

I wouldn't say unique, as many phones came out before with a full screen i.e. the P series from Sony Ericsson, 3650 and some others

I duno, I just get irritated by some people thinking the iPhone is the be-all and end all of phones...

Which is why I said fairly unique, and mentioned more than just the screen. Like said, considering the number of phones that have had their designs inspired by the iPhone since it's release, I think they were doing something right.

I ordered mine. I'm due for an upgrade with T-Mobile as it is.... Will be interesting to see what devs end up doing with it.

iPhone zealots are as irritating and pompous as Mac zealots ever were. Some people want a hard keyboard, period, and since it's always Steve's way or the highway at Apple (choice = BAD), thank god other vendors are offering products for the rest of us.
