I don't think there's any motion controls in the game, though I may be wrong. I'd get the game myself, but I don't have anyone that would play it with me. :(

i'm certain i've read that there are no motion controls in the game.

wireless one-handed controllers seem perfect for this though. i can't imagine the ps2 version has much to recommend it unless it's cheaper?

wait, can't it be played just by 1 person?
tell me yes please T_T
i think i'll get the wii one then, just for raising my wii game collection :/

it can be played by one person, and it's been pretty decent so far even single-player (only played about 1.5 hours)

Wii is widescreen + 480p. PS2 is neither.

Not to mention it's a lot easier to get four controllers going on the Wii version than the PS2 version.

I don't have the time or cash for this right now, but I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for it down the line (yes, I know, that's a risk for Atlus games).

it *does* have a pass-the-controller option.

the one-player game has you competing with computer-controlled players. i'd be curious to know if it has a nice dynamic as a two player game... lots of these screw-your-friends games work much better with >2 people.

Just started the Wii version. It's damn fun! Highly addictive, but seems really easy so far (about an hour in). I'm trouncing the CPU player and haven't taken a single point of damage from an enemy yet (they're super dumb). I've liberated 2 towns and leveled one of them so far. Started with a warrior.

Having to sit through the CPU sucks, but there were some speed options in the menu, I see myself cranking those to max.

No motion controls, supports remotes, classic controllers and GCN pads. Not really 480p, more like 800*448, small black bars around game. Looks decent enough for what it is.

Ohh! Forgot about this, me and friends were very interested when it was announced. The multiplayer sounds like much fun.

Can you mix and match different controllers?

I thought this was classic only?

Damn, looks like I'll be picking this up before the weekend.

The two reviews on Metacritic make it sound good (wired says best party game on the system)

Dokapon Kingdom's perfectly balanced multiplayer, cool aesthetics and pure addictive fun make it a new high-water mark for party games on the Wii.

Just like most of the other Atlus-published titles out there, it's hitting a smaller niche, but for those that it is aiming at (people that like RPGs, want a light, fun, multiplayer ode to the genre), it's a must-play.

Just got the Wii version today. I'll give impressions some time tomorrow if I can get my dormmates together to play tonight.

Also, is anyone going to start an official thread for this or are there too many releases next week?

This is the best console party game I have ever played other than Rock Band.

If you can get 4 people together, you MUST get this game.

Meant to post earlier but yeah, picked it up this weekend and played with a buddy + 2 cpus. That alone was still an absolute blast. It really is the most fun to fuck each other over.

It should be noted that if you defeat your friend, you can then make him walk around with a creamy pile of poop on his head.

Unless you start with a knack for this game, the computer will beat you soul crushingly bad. I can never seem to get first place in a game with three CPUs. Second at times, but not for long either.

Somehow though, I manage to scrape along enough to never end up in fourth much.

I picked this up over the weekend and played a little with my wife. We did a two-player story mode game. The only "problem" is that neither of us really have the heart to really attack the other player. I'm also doing a single player/3 computer game, and I'm surprised at how much fun it is. However, I have them on the lowest difficulty, and I still find myself shouting angrily at the TV when one of them screws me over.

I REALLY want to get three of my friends in to play this. That will be fantastic.

Oohhhh, we won't have any issues with that in this house hold. :D

i just started it today

oh my god it's really HARD :|

the cpu conquered many town when i was killed several times by the bosses and by the rival too :| (1vs1 story mode btw)

i like it anyway, but i really don't understand the idea of reaching a destination using ALL the moves points i have
i had to go back 5 moves just because in the disk move roulotte i got 6 and i was 1 cell next to my destination .____.

Crossposted thoughts from my blog:

Now, Dokapon was a big surprise. Sorta. I remember when Atlus first announced this, I was like WTF is this garbage? Another Mario Party ripoff?! And so I wrote it off until release day, then I started to see some good impressions. So yeah, it is a board game, but probably the deepest digital party board game you'll ever play. It mixes a board game with roleplaying elements. So it might not be for everyone, but if you can get into it, it's SO much fun. And mostly recommended if you're playing with other humans. I didn't mind the single player, but the real joy here is screwing over your buddies. :D

See, one of the greatest things about this game are the crazy things you can do! Like robbing towns and shops, and you do so by playing Roshambo! It's hilarious, I tried to rob a town and the mayor freaks out and says something along these lines: "You gotta be kidding me! I'm warning you! I'll have you know I have a 8th degree belt in the art of Roshambo!" WTF!? If you succeed, you can get great items and wealth. But if you fail, you get a giant wanted status put on you. This lasts an entire game week and makes it so you can't go into any town or place. Which is pretty obstructive when you're playing to play the board game. On top of that, you get a hefty bounty placed on your head. Meaning, the player that offs you gets massive riches. Oh, but robbing the shops can be so worth it! See, I tried robbing the weapon shop for the heck of it once and scored the most expensive shield that I couldn't afford to buy! Another great situation, was robbing the lady @ the item shop. She gave me these super awesome items that block fatal hits. This was a extremely helpful item, as it let me kill the other player I was playing with :D Also, that's another thing, you can see some pretty mean things after offing another player. Rob them of all their gold, items or even a town. Or if you want to be petty, you could draw on their faces and change their clothes. There's also the option to forgive them... Who would choose to do that? Anyway! Moving back, like I was saying, it is a roleplaying game as well. So when you're not busy scheming to screw over your buddy, you'll fight random battles on the various spaces on the board. You'll even take on boss battles! Normally, you're all questing around for the king, but that's where the competitive play comes in. Say player 1 gets to the potion the king wants before everyone does. Well! Hope is not lost! This is where everyone then proceeds to try and kill player 1 for the potion. It gets extremely cutthroat, and that's really where all the fun lies. A big warning though is that the game can take an extremely long time to play, but there is a mode where you can set a time limit. But it's still more fun to play the story mode since it gives you quests to embark on. Well, if you manage to anyway!

is anyone playing this in "campaign mode" with four people? any idea what kind of time commitment would be required?

also - would you be best served (fun-wise, of course) by playing a few shorter games to "get the hang of things" before embarking on a campaign, or just dumping four new players into the breach without any idea what's going on?

CPU is known to be cheap, unfair, and frequently roll just what they need.

I'm going to try to get four of my friends to start a campaign after the Halloween party my wife and I are throwing next week.

As far as learning the ropes, my wife and I started out on a two player story mode, leaving each other alone for the most part, and focusing on the objectives. That's been a good way to learn the game. I also started a 1 vs 3 game by myself, and that's been brutal, but also a learning experience. Eventually I want to do a 2 on 2 game with my wife and two computer players, but she doesn't want to lose her character yet.

that is a good point indeed
i just don't like and i don't understand the sense of that thing that force me to use all the moves points i got, it's really painful when i need just 1 point to go to a town and i get 6, then i get other numbers and i NEVER reach the town >_>

I got this yesterday. What a game. So awesome. The interface is a bit clumsy, but the game itself is pure gold.

The CPU is mean, though. Even on easy I have my troubles with the computer controlled enemy. It's merciless, attacks relentlessly and uses magic or traps whenever possible. Plus it nearly always gets the throws or items it needs.

Had my mage miss the CPU with a supposedly 73% success rate spell three times in a row. The bastard of a warrior then turned around, went to the magic shop and struck me with two 70% spells. SO UNFAIR! It's not supposed to work that way! I'm the mage!*shakes fist*

We have a single player campagin going with two people, and it's a pretty awesome game. I think that a 4 player free for all will play a lot differently. In single player, we're almost trying to work together half the time to clear the map, but also trying to capture the towns first.

Very fun, I enjoy the simple graphics and voice overs a lot. This should be a blast while having friends over for a long time to come.

I hate to quote myself, but since I only have two GC controllers and two wiimotes, can you mix and match different controllers in this game, or does every player have to have the same type of controller? Maybe somebody can test this?

Mix and matching is available. After setting up your character it will ask you to assign connected controllers to specific characters. You can also play with only one controller, if you don't mind passing it around.

Man, I still haven't played this in multiplayer. Stupid busy friends. :(

Anyway: Oh god the CPU is having a bad day, and it's taking it out on me.

It all started with my dumb ass casting some mysterious spell I found that made every field a trap field. I don't know if it was an additional effect of my spell or not, but suddenly the CPU (female warior) went off the deep end.

The traps wouldn't have been so bad, only very annoying and expensive/time consuming. I was just about to upgrade armor and weapons when the plague drained my bank account for good. My debt is now considerable, and I can't buy any new equipment, which is a serious problem in this game.
Now... the CPU somehow always evaded taking any noteworthy damage by the traps, and thanks to some red chest it wasn't affected overly much by the plague, in fact, it bought some significant upgrades. It just went on and gained three levels in three days by sheer luck, gave me sore feet and poison, and offed me after watching me squirm for a bit. Meanwhile nearly all my spells fizzled, I stumbled upon poison gas traps and others that took away roughly half of my health, was forced to quaff all my potions and sell most of my spells/items.
Not content with taking one of my towns after curbstomping me, it
went to a certain space and transformed into a darkling
. This enabled it to easily take over many of my other towns, and it gave me some ailments after killing me again for good measure. My ranking went to hell over the course of one and a half ingame weeks.

I think the technical term would be "I got pwned". Hard.

Stupid fucking insane "easy" CPU. Oh well. Game's still hugely fun. And that bitch... she's going down. No mercy. Shit's personal now.

I love the game. It's a bit unbalanced, but the gameplay is undeniably there. Kind of reminds me of Puzzle Quest.

Goddammit; I was supposed to play this (Wii) today with two of my friends, but because one couldn't make it, I decided to hold off because I want at least two other people [the first time] =( Now I have to wait until next Saturday, which may be a somewhat good thing because I might get a third person to come play it...:D

I made sure to tell them it's coined as the friendship-destroying and that I am eager to play :D The wait is killing me, though...! I refuse to play it by myself--at least until I play it once with friends.

BumP*

Got this from Amazon for $20 for Wii. (See UPS thread). Haven't played it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I decided not to get it for PS2 because I know more people with Wiis than PS2s, and multiplayer would work better on Wii.

Hopefully if it doesn't snow this weekend, I'll be able to play it multiplayer.

Played it for a couple of hours and had some fun with it. You guys are right - the computer cheats like a Mofo in this game.

And unlike Mario Party, there no way for you to get back in the lead once you're in fourth place. When does the story mode end, anyway?

I wish I had more friends around to play it with.

Okay, holy crap, I'm buying this game based solely on reading the posts in this thread. I was kinda on the fence for a while, but yeah, I'm jumping into this one.

I play this with a bunch of my friends (exclusively multiplayer campaign mode) and it can take a surprising amount of time to even get through half of it.

That said, one easy way to get from 4th to contending, turn into a darkling. If a bat appear above you, go to the Dark Space (has a star of david, now that I think about it), and you'll turn into a creature that will obliterate all of your opponents. The end result is generally everyone starting from zero again.

Great game.

Wow, even if you are way behind and get darkling and re-populate all the cities with monsters, the computer still kicks your ass if they take hold of the castles.

Is there a way to unlock all the jobs from the beginning of the party mode? I don't see myself playing this game long term with anybody, and I probably won't play single player more than once.

If you can get enough darkling points, you can take the computer's castles.

I'm actually in first, and I have been for most of the game (barring the time when a computer stole one of my castles). I guess I just got lucky.
