It was a difficult and sometimes painful journey, but I really enjoyed it. I hope you did too. Thanks to everybody who joined in, and I hope to see you next year! Same bat time, same bat channel.

Until then:

OP preserved for posterity:

GAFers! Have you dreamed of writing a novel some day, but just never gotten around to it? Do you hate free time? Then National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short) may be right for you.

http://www.nanowrimo.org
(the site is down right now... this happens every year working just fine, come on in!)

NaNoWriMo.org said:
What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.

Who: You!

Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.

When: Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight.
Write a 50,000 word (175 page) novel in a month? Yes it's insane, but that's the point. Write like hell, shut down your internal editor (that can come later), and just get it done.

NaNoWriMo.org said:
Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.
We have some time until the start of November--enough to decide you're going to do it, and come up with a few ideas for your novel.

We had 36 GAF participants and 5 winners last year. Which is pretty awesome, but I think we can do even better! I will keep this post updated with participants and their word counts.

Leaderboard:

Stuck on plot? Try adopt-a-plot, adopt-an-opening-line, or any number of other adoptions.
No Plot? No Problem!, a book by the founder of the site, intended for NaNoWriMo participants. (GAF referral included in link)
NaNoNoob Advice Thread
If you're an outline-type writer (as opposed to seat-of-the-pants), check out the snowflake method of outlining.
Some GAFers have found success with alternative word processors like Q10.
(if anyone else finds some good stuff, post it and I'll add it here)

FAQ:
The internets are broken?
No, the site is just getting hammered. This happens every year.

How do I write 50k words?
One at a time. Seriously though, if you can keep up with the benchmark (1,667 a day) you're golden. If you can't, no problem, just set aside a weekend day to play catchup.

How do I update my word count?
They don't have very good grouping features on the site yet, so we'll just use the OP to keep up to date. If you want your word count updated, post your final word count for the day in this thread. I'll try to update the leaderboard in this post daily (as of midnight PST).

What if I want to write something short?
Then this isn't the thread for you... but why not try the GAF short story challenge? There should be a new one up shortly after we finish NaNoWriMo.

Is there any reason to actually sign up on the site itself?
Yes! First of all, you can have your novel officially validated by the site (copy/paste from your word processor into their word counter). This lets you officially win, and gets you congratulations and all sorts of fame and glory. Second, by signing up, you will get two "pep talk" emails each week from famous authors. This year, that list includes Brian Jacques, Philip Pullman, Katherine Paterson, and, er... Piers Anthony.

Does my story have to be original?
No. It's whatever you want to write. So write Thundercats fanfic while watching AMVs on youtube to your heart's content.

Can I/Do I have to share a synopsis or excerpts?
You don't have to do anything in this thread except update your word count if you want to be on the leaderboard in the OP. But if you want to share any of your writing, or your plot, or your totally awesome characters, feel free!

I don't know if I could do this again.
My hand still hasn't recovered from last year.
And I never read my story again. :lol

:lol Same.

Hell, I have no idea if I'll even have time to finish one--I'm doing so much other crap. But I'll have a go anyway.

Part of the problem is... I've also been writing a story at work while bored... I get bored often... that is a little over 100 pages at this point.

It's a little goofy, but I don't want to leave it for a month.

Maybe we can split writing duties on a story. 25k each. :D

Anyone have an idea what they'll be writing about? I was toying with writing my very own Dark Tower/Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles/Kingdom Hearts (Lol in no particular order) with characters from my short stories, but then I realised that the characters from my short stories aren't really fleshed out so it won't be interesting.

Instead I'll be trying out a Water Margin/Outlaws of the Marsh kind of thing. First twenty or so chapters are short stories detailing the lives of 'the most evil people ever', then the perspective shifts to the modern incarnation of an evil overlord who joins up with characters and go on a merry adventure to stop the prophecy from having (Heroic warrior of light is antagonist). I thought I'd have fun with that.

I decided to go back to a plot I was planning on using last year, and then dropped: a Homeland Security agent hunts down a secret Al Qaeda base where the terrorists are assembling massive numbers of space heaters in order to accelerate the end of the world via global warming.

Should be fun. I'm planning a lot more thoroughly this time around.

i'm almost 99% sure i won't even come close to finishing given how little free time i'm going to have in november, but that won't stop me from signing up and trying

I'm going to do this, or atleast give it a shot. My friends like my writing and I got a couple ideas in my head begging to be tied together in a story. I'm going balls deep on this one.

Are we posting our stories on GAF? I don't quite feel like singing up and all that jazz.

I failed miserably last year, and I expect to again this year. I'm in, but only because it'll give me some incentive to write some of my ideas down, even if i don't reach the magic 50,000 words mark.

Not the whole story, although some people will probably post excerpts from time to time.

You really should sign up. Not only do you get a weekly motivational email from famous authors (last year, that included Neil Gaiman!), but nothing beats actually copy/pasting your story into their validator and having it congratulate you.

At least, in my opinion. :)

Personally, my favorite part was updating my word count and making sure I was always ahead of Cyan by just a few words. :P

So I know I won't finish, but one year was good enough but gonna sign up for now.

You know who'd be good at this? R.L Stein of Goosebumps fame, he pumped out a book a month for seven years. No idea how he did it though...

My fiancee and I signed up a couple weeks ago. I'm pretty excited. I don't really have a plan for writing, I'm more of a by-my-pants type of writer. Although I'm thinking of a Blade Runner / Fallout / Zombie / something along those lines type of dealy.

Here's hopin' I can wipe out 175 pages!

Ha! Well for the next week and a half, you're just behind me. Bwahaha!

alright ,i'm down.

I have so much free time I might be able to do this. I will probably lose interest by the end of the first week though :(

Do you guys think of a general outline before you start or just make up crazy crap as you go?

edit: signed up

double edit: i'm also a terrible terrible fiction writer at the best of times

Aye, write and you may fail. Don't, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our critics that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR NOVEL!

Screw it, I am doing this :D :D At least trying.

My main problem is writing's block, I am currently writing but... I am stuck. I just won't go THROUGH. Any recommendations?

Bracket off the section you have difficulty with, like so: "[here Relix does this]" and continue from a point in the future. When you return later, it may be easier to write. Just keep moving.

Actually this is my problem. I like to write everything in a linear fashion, from beginning to end with no spots left for later whatsoever. I might need to do this, but it's somewhat hard for me =P

Try it.

You can do it!

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/97126

Tried twice before, and I doubt I'll have any luck this time as well, but I must be a writer- I'm still compelled to try.

My current idea is a sci-fi/psychological piece told by the first person to undergo time travel. Or maybe I'll re-try an old premise, not sure yet.

Sweet. I can get a certificate for doing what I was going to do anyway. I've already started, though. Since my plan is to get the entire thing ready for submission to agents by the New Year, it's perfect timing.

Edit: Oops, I just noticed it was in March. I'll be done by then and well into my next novel.

Last year I made it up as I went, but that turned out to be pretty hard, at times.

This year, I'm trying the "snowflake method" of outlining that I linked to in the OP. Don't have the results yet, of course, but it seems good so far.

I've tried with and without a plan.

Plan. A bunch. Structure, scenes, research -- all stuff you can do before the start.

It's hard enough to just get 1700 words a day on the page, without having to always be trying to figure out where you're going. It'll change enough under your hands to keep it interesting, so a really good plan makes it much easier.

The novel I planned got finished at 160K words, and will be submitted to agents in the New Year. The one I didn't made it to fifty thousand words and will likely never be seen by anyone but me.

Last year, I pretty much winged it but it dealt with a character I was interested in writing at the time. I just had to form some type of story around it.

This year, I think it will be writing from my experience at work in a warped reality. Not sure yet. I have a current writing project that I've been doing for 3 months which has zapped all my creative juices.

Hey, awesome! Good luck with that.

The one I didn't made it to fifty thousand words and will likely never be seen by anyone but me.
Yeah, that's pretty much what happened with mine last year.

Okay, I got a plot. Here's my snowflake-y one sentence summary:

On The Road, with Walter Matthau.

I'll sign up as well - probably be a better use of my time than surfing NeoGAF :) It'll be crap and no one will ever see it, yada yada, but at least I'll have made the effort and mixed up my daily routine for a bit...
