Weapon of Choice: A badass $5 Turrican-esc game in glorious Amiga HD!

Enk

makes good threads.
Game: Weapon of Choice
System: XBOX 360 (in the Community Games section)
Price: 400 points
What you get: A whole lot of kickass

With all this commotion about NXE, installing games, avatars and such, where is the talk about this damn fun game? Vast and lavish level designs with bosses clearly inspired by the first two Turrican games. An art style that is a close representation of an early Psygnosis game going HD. And action that's gooier than the other night when you got your hand good and drunk.

Anyways, rather than create a fancy smancy thread I'll just keep it nitty and gritty like the game. Pics and videos express more than words so I'll let those do the talking:

These guys have talent.

I saw an interview with the developer Mommy'sBest some of the team worked on Resistance Fall of man.

they're already working on their next community title
actually they're working on something 2D not sure if it's a XNA game.

I'm a bit saddened by the lack of love here. Especially since this game caters to the same frothing mouth group who considered themselves men by playing Contra 4. For those actually playing the game, going left on the first stage will take you down a completely different path and will end up on a boss that's kind of a humorous take on the first boss of Turrican. It also leads you to an alternate second stage.

This game looks insane. Interview on Gamasutra is a good read, btw. Apparently Ted Price says he's the most creative programmer he's ever known. Any GAF-Insomniacs want to chime in on that? :)

The game sounds awesome. The art style, however...

The art style reminds me of an era of gaming that seems to have vanished almost completely these days. Not for eveyone but it certainly tingles my nostalgia cord.

Turrican-damn big esc button

Eh, I guess my brain thing malfunctioned when typing out -esque.

Trippy. As. Hell.

I'm the biggest Amiga booster you'll find, but I don't recall seeing animation that smooth back in the day unless it was an Equinox demo :P

I'm buying this tomorrow when I get paid. Probably my favorite of the community games so far. It plays really well and the weapons are totally awesome.

Yet ANOTHER reason why the xbox 360 is one KICK ASS system this generation.. IMHO.. MS is doing far far more good things for us gamers then they have with the bad things done....this is why i just get baffled with all the MS hate, 360 bashing, etc, etc around here sometimes, the fanboys are pathetic pieces of shit... i have alot of respect for what MS has done with the 360 and for the core gamer... they are giving us the best software lineup each and every year so far, giving us a brand new dashboard that honestly makes the console feel like a brand new machine that has so much future potential its just mind boggling what this new dashboard will evolve into over time.....but on top of it all, allowing the average joe at a fair opportunity to design their own games, share them with the us on the xbox 360 Live community and last but not least..a opportunity to make a bit of extra cash for their hardwork from earning cash from the amount of sales you can make by selling your game on Xbox Live...

I own all three consoles and a high end PC..well actually two pretty high end pc's.. im not a fanboy of any one platform but im what you call non biased gamer... a "true gamer" i suppose you can say that just plays any damn good game no matter what platform its on..im fortunate to have a good job to afford to own all systems and the ability to buy any game i want at any time... and so far this generation.. Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is by far the most interesting console of them all and has the best software lineup by far....there for, i give ALOT of respect and props to what the xbox 360 has done this generation....

You fail to mention what system this game is for. Unless you were serious with the topic, being for some "Amiga HD"?

its a 360 "community game" which are games made by supposedly amateur programmers

Big assed enemies. BIG ASSED. You fight a gigantic cup of worms and a hand pours shit all over you from the cup.

Then there's the desert. I won't spoil the desert. It's a pretty meaty game

Well it's not exact but the color tones and how the world looks reminds me of some Amiga games. Like Lionheart for instance:

This game is awesome. Been playing through the various community games and then I played this gem. Better than many "pro" DL games, IMO. Then I checked the price. Only 400 space bucks ($5). Wow! So Bought.

Seriously, if you're a shooter/contra fan this is the best $5 you can spend. Well worth the purchase. Some of these community games take themselves too seriously with their $10 price points. This game is better than all those and is half the price.

Recommended.

yeah bought this to support the author, I could tell from the title screen this was something special and different, game didnt disappoint

BUY THIS GAME.

Nathan is awesome and his game is awesome.

BUY THIS GAME.

I heartily endorse it, and you're off my Christmas list if you can't find 400 MS points under your couch and give this one a download.

artstyle is NASTY
game looks fun though, i'll give it a try, hoping my tv doesn't blow up trying to display an amount of colours it has never had to deal with this gen.

Is this available to all XBL subscribers, including us dirty unwashed Canadians?
How do I get to it?

Need to pick this game back up over the weekend. Got my arse kicked last time I sat down with it.

Nice to see a thread for it tho as I guess I'll be asking for tips tomorrow.

Is this what being on shrooms is like?

Pretty much. But having a weapon in hand will most likely result in your own head being blown off. And instead of blood and brain-matter, it's glorious confetti and rose pedals.

I thought this game was 800 points? Consider me sold at 400.

glad someone made a thread for this gem. buy buy buy!

reposting my comments from the XNA thread:

weapon of choice is amazing! buy this shit people.

the variety provided by the 6 or so characters is unmatched. each one has a unique double jump, basic attack, and alternate attack, while several characters have their own special abilities as well. the chainsaw chick is fun, though she is clearly one of the easier ones to use. her screw attack jump is a cool little metroid homage, too. speaking of which, what do you guys think of the spider ball-esque wall climbing mechanic? navigating the environments is a breeze, and it really makes me feel like a one-man ass kicking army.

i never seem to finish single player games these days, yet i've already gone through weapon of choice multiple times on hard. the enemies and their attacks are extremely varied, having multiple paths is great, and each character brings a whole new experience to the table. i recommend just starting on hard, which simply adds more monsters to the levels. it's not a long game, but it's so satisfying to play.

here's hoping we get a sequel on XBLA, as these guys certainly deserve it.

Had to bump this since I got a chance to sit down with this and really get a grip on how awesome the game is. The weapon variety and originality is amazing, especially all of the little details surrounding them. A great example of detail is each characters double jump has a different effect and purpose. Also the way you can avoid Death makes for some pretty intense moments.

Love using the guy with the Jet Engine weapon...when you shoot with the right trigger held down, the blast is so powerful that it sends you flying in the opposite direction if you're airborne. You can actually use it to your advantage and make quick escapes.

Yeah I'm on the third level and he's my favorite character so far. I love the slowdown death effect and it's REAL easy to escape with this guy when that happens. Great stuff.

yeah Jet Guy is the best, I sometimes feel I'm cheating if I use it to boost my jump but then I'll die.

Need to really sit this weekend and get this done, its old school hard but its always from my stupid mistakes.

I couldnt find this game on the canadian xbox live this weekend? Whats going on?
Dunno why, I tried it on Saturday and bought it 4 minutes later. Great game.
Priced right, lots of replay with the different characters. I haven't gotten very far but it did seem a little easy. I kept pressing A to jump though, LT just seems kooky for jump, just me I guess.

I bought the "dancing dog" (dookie?) game for my kid, for whatever reason he really liked it and the proceeds being donated seemed like a good idea.

Out of the 4 or 5 Community games I've tried, this definitely stood out as one of the rare games in that feature that is worth checking out.

I especially love the "oh shit you are about to die" bullet time mode.

Can't find it on Swedish Xbox Live. Can anyone tell me if it's actually available outside NA?

Crap, tried to get it from marketplace.xbox.com and it says it's not available for my region. Goddammit Microsoft!

Oh shit, thanks for the heads up. I'm buying this tonight when I get home. Turrican 2 is one of my favourite games of all time and after watching the youtube video in the OP, I have a game boner that could take an eye out.

400 points? I'm in.
