Cletus Clay: XBLA / PC action sidescroller entirely made out of clay

Tuna Technologies recently announced their latest game: Cletus Clay. Just like their previous game (Platypus), its graphics will be entirely based on claymotion and Anthony Flack (for those who know him) will once again be a part of their development team. This game looks awesome quite frankly and I can't wait to see the first gameplay trailer of this.

By the way: I might have an opportunity to interview the devs relatively soon and while I've already thought of more than enough questions on my own, you can always post some of your own in this here thread if you'd like me to interrogate them (so to speak) about specific game-related matters.

Anyway, here's the official PR:
A rootin’, tootin’ platform brawler created and animated entirely in clay coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade and PC in 2009

SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND – November 21st 2008 – Independent UK developer Tuna Technologies are excited to announce Cletus Clay, a manic side-scrolling platform brawler headed your way on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PC in 2009. Released under Tuna's new label TunaSnax, the Xbox LIVE Arcade version will be self-published whilst the PC version will be distributed by those mighty fine folk at Pinnacle Software.

Based on an original concept by acclaimed animator Anthony Flack, Cletus Clay is a fast paced old-school run'n'gun with eye catching visuals and a seriously irreverent attitude. Playing as the eponymous Cletus, a bad-tempered, wise-cracking, gun-totin' hick, you take on a bunch of uninvited alien visitors who have had the temerity to trespass through your farmland on their way to conquering the Earth. Cue flying saucers, ray guns, seemingly endless reinforcements, giant robots and motherships galore; but nothing is a match for an angry redneck and his pitchfork!

Created entirely from clay, the world of Cletus ClayTM is a fusion of traditional model making, stop-motion animation and modern digital technology. Virtually every object in the game has been modeled, photographed and animated using similar techniques to those used on productions such as Wallace and Gromit (Aardman Studios).

So, grab your shootin' iron and blast, punch, kick, and smash your way across 12 memorable levels in a quest to rid the Earth of them there boggle-eyed cow rustling invaders. Because nothing says ‘Welcome to Earth’ quite like a good old home cooked helping of whup ass!

KEY FEATURES:

• The whole game is made out of clay and presented in HD: you can even see the thumb prints on the models!
• Two player cooperative gameplay: a second player can join in as Cletus’ brother Emmett so the dynamic duo can beat up the marauding alien invaders as a team.
• A multitude of mini-games and bonus stages, including: blasting alien saucers out of the sky with a mounted cannon, rescuing sheep from a flooding valley, frantic egg gathering from chicken coops, exploring caves for hidden treasure and hunting down fleeing aliens in a hijacked flying saucer.
• Cletus has access to an impressive arsenal of weapons to lay down the pain, including: pitchforks, shotguns, dynamite, mini-guns, flame throwers, grenade launchers and alien ray guns. But, given half a chance, he's just as likely to make use of a sturdy plank, a hay bale or even a pig!
• There is a dedicated Cletus Clay blog at www.cletusclay.com

Oh wow, I never thought this game would re-surface. I watched this game for years when I was part of the Blitz3D community, and it was pretty sad to see the difficulty that Anthony Flack went through getting this together. Best of luck to him!

I wonder whether the game will run into any copyright issues. I'm certain the alien is based on 'Burp the alien' from Oink magazine in the eighties.

Very cool!

I remember back when I was programming with Blitz Basic, this game was one of the ones to really look forward to (it was originally being programmed in that language).

It's great to see it show up again! :D

The Neverhood!

This game looks awesome, glad it's coming to XBLA.
You make it sound as if The Neverhood is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade. As far as I know, it isn't, and I'm kind of mad at you for almost getting my hopes up.

Tuna Technologies?

Anthony Flack works for Squashy Software which is a one man band.
I wouldn't like to see someone else take credit for his work again.

Read the very depressing "Making Of Platypus" for more info.
Just read the 'Making of'; talk about terrible luck.

And I don't think Tuna Technologies trying to take credit from his work or anything like that. Maybe they simply agreed that Tuna focuses on the development side of things, so that Flack can entirely occupy himself with the claymotion and actual designs or something.

Tuna are partnered with Anthony on this project, there's nothing to worry about. This is a good thing.

How in the world? What a truly insane way to make a game, but unbelievably awesome at the same time! How many hours must this have taken?
