LOTR: Battlefro....er... Conquest Demo out on PSN

Brought to you by Pandemic, the creators of the Star Wars Battlefront games and published by EA is LOTR: Conquest. A very 'Battlefronty' type game that pits orcs v. humans in a battle royale. Play as a mage, scout, archer, warrior or special*. Demo came out today on the US Playstation store - includes offline tutorial mission and online matches.

My first opinion was very negative, just jumping straight into the online game gives you the realization that this is not a good looking game. After spending some time with the tutorial and going back online I there was definitely some fun to be had.

Each class brings something different, although I liked the archer and warrior classes the best since the other two are more specialized. The demo has horses that you can mount for quickly traversing the level (I didn't see if you could attack on them - it didn't seem like it but I'm not 100% sure), there are special units that you can control such as the Ents or Trolls. These guys are like the "Tanks" that have devastating power at the cost of mobility. You can also play as Hero characters like Gandalf. Don't know how but there was a guy playing him kicking ass.

It's shame that the game isn't more polished. The LOTR action games on the PS2/Xbox were among my favorite games of the last generation and this doesn't look as good to me. I know it's a little different but we'll see.

There's a lot of stuff that could make this game very cool like a leveling system and more mounts. If you can fly around in a dragon or eagle that would be sweet. Don't know if it has any of that though.

*Can be hero or creature.

These felt better on PC.

It's great that the first two posts were about 360 and PC, even though this is a PSN demo. :D

I currently have the demo downloading, will be back with impressions soon.

My brothers are huge Battlefront fans who have been waiting for this game since it was first announced.

I await more impressions!

Not impressive.

The graphics are pretty terrible. I know people often post how such and such game looks like something from last gen but, no kidding, the environments look like a high-rez PS2 game. Low poly count and everything. The character models are obviously superior, though.

I have never played Battlefront, but the gameplay reminds me a lot of Dynasty Warriors with an online component. I guess if you like this type of repetitive hack-and-slash you would find something to like here. There were a ton of combos available, but I doubt learning them is mandatory to finishing the game. I foresee lots of button mashing.

I hope to Christ it's good, Pandemic have been dropping the ball lately though...

Didn't EA recently lay-off a bunch of people from there?

I liked the Battlefield games, but Pandemic's last game was a huge disappointment to me (Mercs 2), and the videos I've seen of this haven't looked all that great. I'll definitely check this out when I get home from work tomorrow though.

I feel bad for EA getting stuck with Pandemic just to get access to Bioware.
I feel bad that they went for BioWare instead of picking up Obsidian.

That 1 Billion spent must be hurting them right about now.

Bioware is much more popular and well known. Even if their RPGs arent quite near Obsidian, EA gains more from having Bioware

They made Full Spectrum Warrior, I will always love them for that as it was the first tactical shooter I ever enjoyed.

Please make another similar styled game Pandemic!

If you like beat um ups then there's no reason that you shouldn't enjoy it on some level.

yes...such a great track record Obsidion has, lets blow money on an un proven studio!!

they may have the talent but have yet to really utilize it

Maybe you havent played the NWN 2 expansions. Bioware has a lot more proving to do

game is pretty fun but I forgot how lame LOTR fans were. This guy got pissed at me for constantly killing him so he finally snuck up on me with a scout and just as he did the sneak attack move he said into the mic "prepare to blow the horn of gondor! hrrr!". I was groaning for an hour afterwards.

Wow, I didn't even know this game existed.

Yeah, Two Towers and Return of the King were a lot of fun, hopefully this turns out well.

one does not simply BLOW the horn of gondor...

I was playing as Gandalf, hell yeah. The Single Player demo was all kinds of fun, the problem on the other hand is camera, somewhat convoluted controls, and the multiplayer. In multiplayer it feels like you have no control over your characters after every move until the animation ends, a bit of a disconnect. If Single player is only about capturing bases, then it's not worth it at all.

Possibly because 360 and PC owners are interested in the game and a bit peeved that the demo isn't also available on their platforms now. Fingers crossed for a thursday 360 demo.

i dont like obsidian... THey always seemed like Bioware's understudy to me.

Considering they make games that are as deep or deeper with better writing, dont know how they are. Plus the fact that a bunch of the staff worked at Black Isle, the guys who were Bioware's partners in crime back in their heyday. Having a bunch of the Troika guys also helps

They just need someone who can write romance and think of better puzzles

Downloading the demo for this now. I've been playing Battlefront 2 recently, and while it is fun to play, it feels rather outdated. Hopefully they've brought Conquest up to more modern standards.

Yes, because the end of KOTOR 2 was incredibly deep. You see, when they abruptly ended it with no real conclusion to the story, they did that because it is a metaphor for the Force. So deep.

Yea because making a 40 hour RPG with a 9 month development time is their fault. Yes Lucasarts changing the release date to 3 months earlier then originally planned halfway into development is their fault.

No retard. They were rushed and forced to complete the game in less than a year. There are even people working on restoring a bunch of the lost content. The writing and depth of character is leagues ahead of KotOR 1 which already had good dialogue and story.

I bet you havent even played their other stuff.

Obsidian is more talented, but they are generally way more underfunded and have far less flexibility to tack on another year of development on their projects like Bioware does.

Free Radical was making it :(
Rebellion is making it now. They've pulled of solid 3rd person shooters in the past. I'm sure they'll do better with a decent budget this time around.

It's not going to win any awards for best graphics or best gameplay (repetetive as hell, like Dynasty Warriors)... but I'll be damned if I didn't have a blast playing.

I'll definitely buy it... eventually (backlog).

Yep and Free Radical is more talented then Bungie... they just lack funds and flexibility.

Ok so Obsidian isn't nearly as terrible as Free Radical and are actually pretty fuckawesome developers, but claiming they are above Bioware is just insanity, especially when their best games are all sequels to Bioware games. You can try to scream all you want about how KoToR II could have maybe possibly been if things went better for them, but it was only as amazing as it was because Bioware set it up for them.

Alpha protocol vs Mass Effect II in 09 gogogo!

this shit is beyond terrible

easily one of the worst games ive played this gen

Bu.. bu.. but but it's LOTR, LOTR is always cool, isn't it. The game sounds like the dream of every LOTR fan.

My region is having a major internet problems and the download is painfully slow, it toke me a while to download LBP patch and about 5 hours to download a 350MB (Suikoden) wich usually takes less than 20 min, it really hurts so 1.3 Gigs is out of the question for now.

wow, WTF did Pandemic do with the graphics? This game looks no better than a 4 year old SW Battlefront game :(

only played 30mins so far, and while it might grow on me I can't see my self running out to get it next month.

Well then hopefully Alpha Protocol is a big hit for them and they start to get more time. It's looking pretty good from what I've seen.

It's looking very interesting, I'm definitely looking forward to it.

It's not THAT bad, it ain't pretty though.

I'll still be giving it a rental, button mashing mixed with tons of enemies is sort of a guilty pleasure of mine.
