NPD: PS3-Exclusive December Sales Reveal MGS4's Million
The top 20 selling software list for December 2008 released by the NPD Group on Thursday of last week contained some surprising appearances as well as absences. Today Gamasutra obtained exclusive data to gain more perspective on the sales of some key titles.

The reappearance of Mario Kart DS, which first launched in November 2005, demonstrated the strength of first-party software on Nintendo's dominant handheld. However, big-name titles like Ubisoft's Prince of Persia, Sony's Resistance 2, and Eidos' Tomb Raider: Underworld fell completely below the top 20 list, and so their sales figures remained unknown.

Furthermore, NPD provided us with launch-to-date sales for Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4.

Sony Exclusives: LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2

For months, Sony has promoted Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet as its first substantial test of the Game 3.0 model first put forward by Phil Harrison at Game Developer's Conference in February 2007.

While the game did debut at number eight on the all-platform top 10 chart following its release in October 2008, it then faded below the top 20 on the crowded November chart. Going into December, the game had launch-to-date sales of only 356,000 units.

While it did not make the top 20, sales of LittleBigPlanet did rebound in the final month of 2008 to 255,000 units, bringing its LTD total to 611,000 units after three months. In a November interview on GamesIndustry.biz, head of Sony's public relations for the UK, David Wilson, expressed a belief that that "Sackboy hasn't even hit his stride yet" and that sales would pick up in December.

Resistance 2 is the sequel to Resistance: Fall of Man, Insomniac's alternate history shooter and a key launch title for the PlayStation 3 in November 2006.

After launching 385,000 units in November 2008, Resistance 2 sales fell 45 percent in December. Its LTD total now stands at 598,000 units.

For context, it is helpful to note that the original sold through 757,000 units in its first 13 months, but on a much smaller userbase and with fewer big-name titles for competition. It appears likely that Resistance 2 will surpass sales of Resistance: Fall of Man within the first few months of 2009.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Passes 1 Million

According to figures from the NPD Group, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has now sold over 1.076 million units since its launch in mid-June of 2008.

MGS4 was the PlayStation 3's first game to reach number one on the NPD Group's all-format monthly sales charts, with consumers purchasing nearly 775,000 copies of the game. It subsequently fell from the top 20 charts and has averaged around 50,000 units per month in the interim.

The figures shown here, however, are only for sales of the boxed versions of Metal Gear Solid 4. Total sales are likely much higher, since additional copies were sold to consumers in special PlayStation 3 hardware bundles.

Big Names, Smaller Sales

In mid-November, Eidos released the latest Lara Croft adventure game, Tomb Raider: Underworld, on three home consoles: Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3, and Nintendo's Wii. Using a completely new engine and more fully utilizing the latest graphics capabilities of the latest consoles, Underworld was a key title in Eidos's year-end portfolio.

According to recent reports, the latest Tomb Raider did not perform up to expectations and Eidos shares lost 25 percent of their value when the company subsequently lowered its full fiscal year guidance.

Eidos had reported sales of 1.5 million copies worldwide. According to the NPD Group, the combined U.S. sales of the game across all three consoles totaled only 246,000 copies since launch.

The new entry in Ubisoft's Prince of Persia series also failed to chart after its launch in early December. Sales of the console versions -- on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 -- totaled only 483,000 copies. During 2007, Ubisoft's new property, Assassin's Creed, sold 1.87 million copies just on the Xbox 360, although it did launch more than two weeks earlier and benefited from the late November sales rush.

However, we can also say more about Prince of Persia and how well it sold on the two consoles. In particular, Prince of Persia was the fourth best-selling PS3 game in December, between LittleBigPlanet at number 3 and Resistance 2 at number 6. Since we know those two other games sold 255,000 and 213,000 units in December, respectively, we can say that the PS3 version of Prince of Persia had sales somewhere between those two figures.

Those numbers suggest that the two versions of Prince of Persia probably had sales within 30,000 units of each other, which is notable given that the installed base for the Xbox 360 is more than twice that of the PlayStation 3.

Maybe if they do a better job of marketing Resistance 3 and MGS5 (if there is one), they might actually sell. You gotta spend money to make money, and you need to market your shit Sony.

Huh, I thought MGS4 had sold alot more then that here in the US. :S

I dont keep up with sales threads that much...

This doesn't include bundles though for MGS4.

Only 1Mil ? Kinda low...but for such a hardcore IP on Ps3 i guess i can`t expect more.

Technically it has with the bundles. IIRC it hit a million with the bundles in the first month (NPD does not include those figures here, but that is what they stated for June NPD) so one would have to assume it is a bit higher with that factored in perhaps 300-500k or so.

Good job LBP.

I kind of figured MGS4 was higher, kind of suggests new PS3 owners haven't been picking it up much over the holidays?

I'd have loved to see attach rates of LBP to new hardware over Xmas.

Kind of strange about the PoP platform split..I guess Gears/CoD monopolised a fair bit of attention on 360 in Nov/Dec..(?)

Me too, unless those were "shipped" numbers?

Well, I think this settles the with KZII outsell MGS4 thing, its a resounding yes IMO. I do agree MGS4 deserves to be played by more folks.

Good solid numbers for LBP....not so much for MGS4, honestly.

just want to say, this validates my statement regarding LARAs popularity vs nathan

246,000 for 3 platforms = fucking fiasco

In any case, MGS4 probably solid better in US than MGS3 did (with bundles counted), and to a much smaller user base. It's good to see that the interest in the series is not waning.

LBP looks to really be at more than 1.3M sold now, if it sold 611+K just here.

I think ~1.4/1.5 million is more than respectable for MGS4 and the fact that these were not some cheap holiday bundles people were buying says even more. Do we have any US data to put these numbers in persepctive for Metal Gear 2/3? For the base of the PS3 in the US I would say that is a solid showing.

Ah I see MGS3 did 1.3 million so these are actually better at this point really considering the base of the two? Also how does this compare as far as best selling games on the PS3 in the US? Has to be up there yea?

I'm so glad LBP did well, Resistance 2 should have had better numbers but it simply wasn't as good as it should have been, given 750k the original had sold, the R2 numbers were quite disappointing. Insomniac Games need to work on the quality and polish a bit more if they're hoping to expand the userbase for the franchise, the "Insomniac polish in the last two weeks before shipping" thing simply is not going to work. If there is an R3, they need to give the artists more time to work on the levels, as well as play-test both online and offline heavily.

Yes Kanomi did indeed say that, but Konami thinks otherwise.
It's insane how much it costs to make and Market a "Next-Gen" game.

So if MGS needs to sell 5 mil then how much did LBP need to sell? It was a small team I think but the certainly had a lot of marketing.

Valve Spent 10 Million on marketing L4D so think about that.

No too shabby numbers for MGS4 and LBP. As long as they turn a profit and have some legs its all good.

Great numbers for LBP. Anyone have Japan numbers?

Looks like LBP is headed for greatness and has a chance to be the best selling first party title for SONY. Though I think killzone 2 would take that title.

When it stopped tracking it was like around 70K or so. I wouldn't expect more than a 100K total from Japan.

Still, I think it sold 200K in the U.K, so pretty solid performance worldwide IMO.

I bought the mgs4 bundle and i imagine a lot of other people did too. So that number for just america is smaller than it should be.

I did too. And so did a lot of people who wanted last second PS2 BC.

But these numbers do not include bundles. Which means it sold a lot more than that. By an easy few hundred thousands more.

It's over 300,000 units sold in the UK.

600k for US alone for LBP and Resistance 2 doesn't seem that bad to me. I expected worse. Good to see that Resistance 2 has hit at least 1m worldwide. I wonder how many copies of R2 have been sold in Europe. In the UK, the marketing for R2 is non-existent.

1m for MGS4 seems quite decent I think.
