Nintendo are also a non-mover at No2 with ‘Wii Fit’ (-9%) enjoying a prolonged period of steady sell through. At launch ‘Resident Evil 5’ outsold ‘Wii Fit’ by 5 to 1, but in its second week the gap has narrowed to 2.7 to 1. Nintendo also chart at No3 with ‘Professor Layton’ up one place to No3 from No4. This week’s highest new entry goes to THQ and ‘WWE Legends of Wrestlemania’, new at No4 with sales split relatively evenly across PS3 and Xbox 360. After 2 Grand Theft Auto games on PSP, Rockstar’s iconic franchise arrives on DS this week for the first time. ‘Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars’ is new at No6, selling around half of previous handheld GTA title GTA: Vice City Stories’ launch week. A retailer promotion on ‘Street Fighter IV’ (+48%) helps it re-enter the Top 10, up from No13 to No7, giving Capcom two Top 10 games this week.

However, Nintendo make it 3 Top 10 games thanks to the Mother’s Day promoted, turquoise DS Lite Starter Pack, which shoots ‘Brain Training’ (+117%) back into the Top 10, up from No21 to No8. There are 3 new releases that don’t make the Top 10 – ‘Singstar Queen’ at No22, ‘Scrabble Interactive: 2009 Edition’ at No27 and ‘Madworld’ at No34.

SFIV Ps3 got a huge bump.

That'll be because they shipped a new batch to retail.

A lot of UK online retailers sold out of the PS3 version a few weeks ago and only got new stock in the last week or so. I get the feeling that Capcom underestimated the initial demand for the PS3 version over here.

Didn't MadWorld only get 3 days of that week on the charts?

MadWorld landed higher than I thought it would. Not bad for a new IP imo. It's #6 on the Wii full price list. Call of Duty:World at War is still in the top 15 for the Wii full price list as well.

GTA DS has a great start too. I wonder if it will have great legs like other DS titles.I give RE5 another two weeks at the top.

Nice Opening for GTA: Chinatown Wars :D
Seems OK, but the truth will be in the legs. The PSP GTAs always entered high up in the chart too.

EDIT: Holy shit, just saw Madworld. Those guys just can't catch a break. Viewtiful Joe, Okami and now this. Although I think the Wii decision was a catch 22 situation for them. Would have meant a lower necessary budget for their first game, but they were also taking a huge risk, that doesn't appear to have paid off :/

Is it sad that a commercial has more artistic ambition and integrity then the game its promoting?

I always think that every time I see it

It is a great ad. A hard act for the game to follow.

Thats a disappointing and worrying start for Madworld. Game is plastered everywhere.

Are there any good deals on SF4 PS3, as I've held off before jumping in but that bump would suggest some promotion somewhere?

EatChildren said:

I think Scrabble only got three days also. Imagine what it could have done with an entire week of sales! So many triple word scores could have been had.

Cosmonaut X said:
As do all new titles - it's not worth pursuing that angle.

Why not? MadWorld was never going to be a instant big seller, despite an advertising push, and is far more likely to have strong legs thanks to world-of-mouth, rentals, and further advertising.

I don't think MadWorld will do anywhere near as well as I'd like, but I'm not going to judge a potentially leggy Wii game based on 3 days of sales. Higher would be nice, but I'll care more next week.

And both had some pretty huge legs. It's not going to be easy for GTA:CW to outsell GTA:VCS.

LTDs in UK as of three weeks ago:

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories 567k
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories 806k

I dunno, but I bought after waiting for 1 and half weeks to ship because sold out.

Mad World is the complete opposite of a game that would show legs. It's as hardcore as they come.

As much as Madworld's debut is a disappointing I hope it can repeat a similar trend to House of the Dead, which is thankfully still charting in the UK. Sega's brand strength in the UK is a bit shocking in all truth.

Every time a game apparently underperforms in its launch week, there's always someone who says "but it's only been on the market for three days" (the NPD and Media Create threads have their equivalents as well...)

Madworld just hasn't sold that much in its launch period and it's more likely that it will trundle along at the bottom end of the charts for a couple of weeks than see some kind of resurgence. There's a reasonable chance it will exhibit the legs of other Wii titles, but I doubt it's ever going to be a smashing sales success.

Despite the positioning of it by fans and certain members of the gaming press as some kind of Wii third-party blockbuster, I think this was always the likely fate of the game - it's a quirky, violent unknown IP with a Marmite style, not RE5 or Gears 2.

(BTW - advertising has been lousy. US-style sports announcers with a blurry vid of the game running in the background? Awful.)

Then how do you explain Overkill?

Granted, MadWorld is far more 'aggressive' in its presentation and accessibility, but it's still a simplistic and stylish game. It's easy to jump in and have fun. There's very, very little learning curve. The game's visual and audio presentation is original and top notch.

I don’t see why a game like MadWorld can’t potentially have legs. It seems to me to be, much like Overkill, the kind of game you see people playing and go “Oh wow, that looks great!”, and quick hands-on play sessions really sell the quality.

We'll see in a week.

I disagree on accessibility. Overkill is a western game for a western audience. Everyone recognises the pulp horror, everyone can play a lightgun-style game and a lot of people know House of the Dead from arcades. It's a real win-win formula.

Mad World on the other hand is a Japanese game 'aimed' at a western audience. More similar to The Last Remnant than Oblivion. It's much harder to play than HotD even if it's not that difficult. Overkill resonates with both the hardcore and more casual Wii audiences, which is the key to success. I can't see Mad World tapping into the latter, and so I predict a drop more in line with No More Heroes.

There were (or maybe they still are) also some arms lying around in some cities that were promoting Madworld.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2329321.ece

I wonder if these arms are bolted to the ground or something. Else it seems very easy to just pick them up and take them.

From my understanding the shipment for MadWorld wasn't all that high (I had no trouble finding it personally, but my friend said his local store had only 4 copies in.)

The other strange thing is that, despite getting a big poster at the front of the GAME stores they didn't display any copies at the front of the shop entrance like they do with most major game releases.

Regardless I was hoping for a higher entry point for that game. I'm playing it right now and it's great, both a glorious throwback to sidescrolling fighters and an edgy, artistic, flamboyant showcase of Wii technology. And it's funny as hell.

(Incidentally GAME were selling it on launch day for just £30, but then it went up in price by about £2. Huh?)

Madworld will most definitely not be sticking around on the charts for a while. A few weeks at best. Which is fine, because of the game type it is isn't made to stay on the charts for a while.

Sage00 said:
Capcom tried that with RE5. They were stolen. Hopefully Sega learned from them. :P
Ah ok, i didnt know about the RE5 commercial stuff, thanks for the link :)

Those RE5 body parts looks kinda real. I hope that no one mistaken them for real body parts hehe :\ Sega said they made the Madworld arms in black and white so they wouldnt be mistaken for real body parts.

Haven't seen the posted...
RE5 sold 110.555 copies (more than half the shipment) and generated €7.7 million.
The best selling version was the PS3 with 62.040 (the CE sold more than 5000 copies), while the 360 version managed to sell 40.135 (about 3200 CE).

Other interesting numbers shows that RE4 Wii Edition sold more than the PS2 version (190k vs 170k). 80k of the PS2 version were made thanks to the budget release (platinium).
Finally, REUC sold 95k.

To sum it up (GfK Numbers, only for France):

Resident Evil 5 110.555 (includes regular and CE)

PS3/360 breakdown:
PS3 62.040 regular, CE more than 5k
360 40.135 regular, CE at about 3.2k

LTD:
Resident Evil 4 PS2 170k (90k regular, 80k platinium/budget)
Rzsident Evil 4 Wii Edition 190k
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles 95k

I find it mindblowing that the Wii version of RE4 is going to soon top the GameCube version worldwide.

It's funny how it seems lots of web sites are jumping on these pal charts in order to discredit Chinatown Wars and Madworld. It's like they couldn't wait to post their already written up articles declaring them a bomb or disappointment.

I don't think Chinatown Wars dissapointed. It opened at 5, Layton is probably back on there because Nintendo decided to ship the backorders, Wii Fit has the third spot locked down, Resident Evil 5 is on a league of it's own in terms of marketing. If GTA maintains the 5th position it should do just fine.

So is it right that Resistance was released last week on the PSP? What exactly happened to that?
Didn't Socom PS3 launch last week as well? I hadn't seen it in stores before.

How does Chinatown Wars coming in at No.5 equate to disappointment?

I find it more mindblowing how Capcom ignores this success and releases a on-rail shooter again.

I'd love to see a new RE game similar to RE4 with Wii-controls. No RE5 port, though. I already own the game and it would look like shit on the Wii.
They should make a new RE4-like game build up from the ground on the Wii.

I'd still rather see RE6 on the Ps360, though

That's true, I forgot.

The game sold better in Japan (15k) in the first week. :lol
