GAF's Horror Film Recommendation Thread: Leatherface/Freddie/Michael/Jason and more

Status
Not open for further replies.
So I just started watching Eden Lake thanks to reading about it here on GAF. I thought this could be a nice thread for us GAF'ers to comment about the best horror films.

1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Jessica Beil- Scared the crap out of me (hates small towns).
2. Halloween- Michael Myers is the best horror character in my opinion.

Eden lake is actually very very good.

Whatabout you guys and gals?

Some horror / gross movies in my top 10 (not in order of how good they are)

The fly
The Thing
Friday series
Hellraiser
Hostel 1 / 2
Eden lake
The descent
The hills have eyes
Rob zombie's movies ( house of a 1000 corpses / devils rejects / halloween reboot)
Turistas

the scene at the tree and with the daughter in the van is pretty gruesome, still sticks:D
Definitely has scenes that stick with you for a while, yeah. Also one of those movies that makes you love dogs.

Yeah, still have to see part 2 though, I am a sucker for pre/se quels when a movie gets one I oblige myself to go and see it no matter how shitty it is :D

I wont watch hostel 1 and 2 anymore because it was just too sickening for me. (okay maybe I will watch it again)
But that movie really gave me the feeling that that kind of shit might actually be happening.

I really like The Thing by the way and I hope that they won't make a prequel that has to do with the norwegian team.

Hills have eyes is a killer for sure. Also, Wolf Creek. The first time watching it didn't do anything for me but after watching it again, yea, scary.

haha i saw the title and thought " oh ill post my current horror favourite Eden lake..... that worked out well :P

so now ill have to think and edit this post with another suggestion.

Funny games US

and not really gory but still good.

I had never heard about it prior to GAF. It really is well done because it doesn't try to be supernaturally scary. It takes a real location with real people and puts real people in a real situation and does magic. This is what most get wrong. People get scared by films that portray situations that the viewer can actually find themselves in. This is one of them.

- 28 Days Later
- 28 Weeks Later
- The Thing
- REC.

And personaly, even how predictable it is, I kind of liked the Mist. But that's just because of the ending.

I thought you had Michael Jackson in the thread title, since Michael and Jason are next to each other. :lol

But then again, a good horror film could be made about him...

First thing I thought of was The Birds but maybe thats not quite what you're after. Drag Me To Hell out in a couple of weeks though, that should be good.

Please make sure you've seen the originals, but the remake of Hills Have Eyes is better than the original (even Craven says so).

If you like monster-mascot horror, I recommend Jeepers Creepers and Pumpkinhead.

EDIT - SHAMELESS PLUG - please watch my friend's movie The Burrowers. It is a very good horror/Western hybrid, unfortunately dumped on DVD by Lion's Gate.

My Bloody Valentine 3D - I had a blast watching this at the cinema, which surprised me since it's been a while a horror film entertained me.

Friday the 13th - all of them. I personally have soft spot for number 7 due to the silly plot and one of the actors in it. The new one is pretty good too as far as eyecandy is concerned. Not very scary though.

The Exorcist - still creeps me out to this very day. There's something wrong about a girl that age saying things that she said in serious manner.

Night of the Living Dead - the color version one. The fans will smite me for this but I find it a lot more intense than the original.

Forgot to add Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween. While the second half of the movie was somewhat comedic, the first half was phenomenal. Showing the development of Michael Myers from a child to the Michael Myers in the insane asylum, wow. The kid actually scared me!

im of the opinion that abused trailer trash kid is not as scary as a normal kid just flipping out for some unknown reason and murdering his family.

Last House on the Left
The Exorcist
Disturbia
Cry_Wolf

Disturbia may have been a guilty pleasure or a good movie. I'm not sure which.

Return of the Living Dead, a completely underrated zombie gem that introduced zombies eating brains joke, zombie humor & running zombies.
scary_tarman.jpg

returnofthelivingdead2.jpg

Night of the Creeps, another gem. Did a great spin on zombie/creature movies.
o_night_of_the_creeps_autre_image1.jpg

The Gate, great horror movie without excessive gore or violence.

Jacob's Ladder, what is there to say? It's a classic & inspired a ton of movies & games including Silent Hill.

For what it's worth, this is finally coming to DVD in October.

:( *wants a blu-ray*
Incidentally it has been shown in full HD on some horror premium channels (ChillerTV or Monsters HD).

Slither. I'm not a huge fan of Gunn's work but this is a great (and funny) monster flick and it also stars my hero Nathan Fillion.

I'd also recommend Dark Ride, Demented Death Farm Massacre, Return of the Night of the Living Dead, Boy Eats Girl, Videodrome and Black Christmas (1974 original).

Here's a few of my lesser known faves, off the top of my head. I'm a zombie movie guy, so most of my picks lean in that direction:

515HY1A69HL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

3... Extremes
Three very different short stories from 3 different Asian directors (including Oldboy's Chan-wook Park).

61edlz02rLL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

6 Films to Keep You Awake
Six Spanish horror movies packaged together in a super cheap set. Some titles are better than others, but it's an excellent value and worth buying just for A Christmas Tale. [REC] fans should take note, that film's two directors each did a movie for this (A Christmas Tale and To Let).

5162v6eCI%2BL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Dance of the Dead
Really fun low budget zombie flick.

5113YQFBZDL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Audition
A creepy story about a man trying to find romance in the way only Takashi Miike could tell.

511vy0HaXxL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
All Slasher movie fans should check this out. Part parody, part homage, part real slasher flick. Very entertaining.

51Y948K0Z2L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Cemetery Man
I recommend this one every chance I get. The best artistic zombie movie ever made.

513DWS3NT5L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Dead & Buried
All I'm going to say about this one is, it needs to be seen. Just DO NOT watch any trailers or read any synopsis for it. It's one of those movies you need to go into knowing nothing about it.

518QYFGCEEL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

The Devil's Backbone
Lesser known work by Guillermo del Toro, but I think it's one of his best.

51J881B54AL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Feast
Amazing horror comedy and a perfect movie to watch with a group of friends and a few drinks.

517i6TUvNXL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Re-Animator
One of my absolute fave horror comedies. Fans of Evil Dead and Return of the Living Dead should check it out.

51kSYInsJVL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Severance
Out of all the horror comdies that were called "the next Shaun of the Dead", this is the only one that even comes close. Shaun fans & slasher movie fans should check it out.

51BSZ3T9E3L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Zombi 2
Italian zombie flick by Lucio Fulci.

51r2Y5xJ-NL._SL500_AA240_.jpg
517sFJiZuvL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Deep Red & Tenebre
Two of Dario Argento giallo movies. They're probably more of the suspense side than the horror side, but both fantastic.

51MjMnbtLQL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

The Monster Squad
Like a horror movie version of The Goonies.

51YWGAT0QSL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Freaked
Not a horror movie, but if you're a fan of foam latex monsters and wacky humor, you need to see it.

And I saved the best for last...

51AQX7Y69JL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Dead Heat
The perfect slice of 80s cheese.

I saw a trailer for that and thought it looked fantastic.

I'm a little tired of getting burned on blind buys on DVD though, has anyone else seen it?

can't argue with any of the recommendations so far!

some that i have enjoyed:

1. house of 1000 corpses -

this movie is a love-it-or-hate-it movie. i've never heard anyone say "well, it was ok". i either hear its the worst horror movie ever or that it was awesome. i go with awesome. i can't quite put my finger on it, but rob zombie just seemed to capture the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness in the movie.

the gore is there as expected, but the way in which some of the people die is particularly haunting. it is strange because i like this movie a lot but didn't like the sequel (devils rejects) at all.

2. descent -

i loved this movie. like a lot of horror movies you can say it's success is a product of its setting but i think it goes beyond that. i thought they did a pretty good job of establishing the characters early and that kept me interested in the movie. not that i'm looking for any character depth in a horror movie but i liked what they did here.

by the end of the movie i kind of wished there was just
one "monster" instead of an entire pack
, but it still works as it is.

i've also heard the blu-ray version has the original ending. can anyone comment on this? i may buy it if so

3. the thing -

this movie is really a "goes without saying" for horror movie lists. it does so many awesome things and really stands the test of time. some of the effects are cheesy but overall a great movie. kurt russell kicking ass and NOT taking names!

4. dead birds -

i can't FULLY recommend this movie, but it is decent if you catch it on TV or get it as a rental. it's basically a movie set in the 1800's and these bank robbers are running from the law and stay in this "haunted" house. the design of the monsters is pretty freaky in some parts. kids with the blacked out eyes and crazy mouth....

it's your run-of-the-mill horror film but it's worth a viewing if you love horror films (pretty gruesome too!)

5. cabin fever -

i'm sorry! i liked the movie! what can i say?! seems everyone i talk to hates the shit out of this movie but i thought it was very entertaining. extemely gory, a decent dose of comedy, and a wild ending :lol

i might think of some more later and im going to check out some of the recommendations here that i haven't seen yet!

Wasn't it just the theatrical release that had the ending chopped off? The DVD has the original ending as well.

Edit: Oh, looks like there was a cut DVD too. The girls forming a skull cover appears to be the US theatrical cut and the one with Sarah coming out of the pool of blood has the full ending - so you should be good with the blu-ray since that's the same cover and listed as original/uncut, but I haven't seen it (just the uncut DVD) so I can't confirm. Look at me, wasting your time and still not answering you question! Move along, nothing to see here.

I love that someone mentioned Return if the Living Dead. One of my All Time favorite classic zombie flicks. I collect Halloween masks as one of my hobbies, my limited edition "Brains!" mask is definitely one of my favorites check it out...

A bunch of great movies have already been mentioned so I'll try and list some that you might not have caught yet...

All_The_Boys_Love_Mandy_Lane_R2_Custom-%255Bcdcovers_cc%255D-front.jpg

All the boys love Mandy Lane

Not the best or anything. It's more of a thriller, but I dug it for what it was.

i.jpg

An American Crime

One of the most brutal movies I've seen in some time, Based on a true story.

dog_soldiers_04.jpg

Dog Soldiers

One of the best Werewolf movies in recent years.

hard_candy.jpg

Hard Candy

Another thriller, but this one was great...loved it.

hatchet-horror-movie-poster.jpg

Hatchet

Great throwback to the old School slasher movies.

martyrs_mb06.jpg

Martyrs

This one is a true mind fuck. Not for the squeamish.

Splinterposter.jpg

Splinter

This is the one I watched most recently. This movie is AWESOME.

Wolf Creek, one of those frustrating / scary movies where you get really pissed but is scary and awesome at the same time

Cabin Fever is/was fantastic. One of the best comedic horror films of recent years.

Also, Funny Games is fucking awesome.

There are not many good horror films.

The Mist -> Well done movie (if can be called horror)

1408 -> One of the best "horror" (non gore) movies I have ever seen

Nightmare on Elm St. -> Best "slasher" flick out there, actually SCARY compared to most which are just cheesy, and it has a young Johnny fucking Depp!

Saw (series) -> Great as a psychological thriller, but the gore gets too much for me at points >.< Still, amazing series (#2 still bores the piss out of me though :lol )

House on Haunted Hill -> (Discussing the remake) A really well done movie, keeping some of the important elements while making it a modern horror.

Edit:

Agreeing with the following already in this thread

Disturbia (awesome), Hatchet (Awesome)

In a short retort (and explanation) to the House of 1000 corpses love/hate thing... the movie started out amazing. Insane family and all

The ending ruins it all, completely... just fucking abysmal (it goes from an awesome story about an insane family to a sci-fi cheesy flick that is no longer believable or eery)

A good friend/ co-worker is a huuuuuuuuuuge horror film fanatic. I recommend watching these with a group of friends:

They're horror/ comedy. You HAVE to watch all three consecutively. Again, if you do watch them, make sure to have a lot of your buddies (and booze) around. And whatever you do, DON'T look up how the third one ends There are by far the funniest movies I have ever seen.

Wow, you have a Tarman mask? You sir, are awesome. A little off topic, but do you have pics of all your masks? I'd love to see the collection.

Not to mention the best end credits song in the history of film!

Session 9
Definitely worth seeing, but it's totally unlike what the OP is asking for, I think. Session 9 was all about creepy atmosphere and a building sense of dread.

I can't believe some people were actually bothered by Hostel. I saw it at the movies and it was just so lame same with Saw the first one wasn't half bad two and three were meh. Some of my picks

Tale of Two Sisters

Cannibal Holocaust

Others already mentioned Dog Soldiers, Night of the Creeps, Return of the Living Dead, 3 Extremes, Cemetery Man, and Audition all worth checking out.

Dance of The Damed: Was good at times, not great. Try Chud 2 instead

1408:WHY have 1 room when you can watch The Shining and have the whole hotel. I thought the beginning of this was excellent, great set up, once again bad follow through. Maybe i missed something, but i wante dto find out why the room was haunted.
