Impressions

I'll update once my copy arrives.

Hopefully my copy will ship out from VG+ today. And even more hopefully I'll have it by friday. I want this game so hard right now.

I was so happy to play this game this week when I preordered last week at RosenQueen.

...only to check and see if they shipped it to me early (they did this for AT 2, shipped the Friday before release), and noticed they put a note on the game's page that they will not be shipping the game from their warehouses until the 28th.

:|

Needless to say, it made me a bit irritated. But I can wait, still working on Devil Summoner 2.

I really, really don't want to review this game, because I think it's going to hurt some feelings. Just... wait for the reviews, or Durante's impressions after a few hours. I'll be very interested to see if his impressions follow the same curve as mine did.

The RQ page already said that last week though. It's the reason I didn't order with them even though you get an additional item. (Well, a postcard, but still)

I CAN'T READ, THERE, I SAID IT! ARE YOU HAPPY? :p

(I just wanted to get my order placed and it didn't even catch my attention)

That bad?

Unless it rapes my memories of AT characters it can't really hurt my feelings, my expectations for it are very low. At best I expect some entertaining fanservice with characters I know and a fun battle system.

The Japanese reviews weren't very kind, and from what I played in the demo, this isn't the kind of game that can be improved with a good localization.

Are the reviews that "the combat is archaic because it is turn-based" BS? Or are there actual legitimate issues?

Either way, I will wait on impressions first in this thread before buying.

If you're getting this game day one, you probably should know by now what you're getting into (I do, fortunately!). Otherwise, stick around for impressions.

I know the game is mediocre, but I want to play something different.

Getting this over inFamous for now. (Don't worry I'll get inFamous later)

Well said. As of now, I don't think people that have never heard of it before should just pick it up without a bit of research.

The poor Japanese reviews had nothing to do with a hatred of turn-based combat, they just noted that it's a poor game. If the PS3 actually had some quality JRPGs on it, this would go largely ignored.

With that said, I'll probably still pick this up after a price drop or something.

Well, you might get half of what you're looking for. Might.

Regardless, I'll have my impressions early next week, probably Tuesday-ish.

Ah, good, well then there'll be more chatter. Again, I'm curious to see if my impressions are different from others', but.. yeah.

Definitely will be waiting on impressions in this thread before buying.

Thanks.

I think mine's set to ship Friday from Amazon.

I imagine this thread will be pretty quiet, but I'm really looking forward to playing Cross Edge.

Considering Idea Factory's (and Compile Heart's) reputation, I'm certainly not expecting much at all. I tried to warn my fiancee that it may be wise to wait for reviews, but she's such a huge fan of anything Gust even goes near (and Disgaea a bit too) that it's a day 1 purchase for us. I don't mind since I'll just consider it a thank you to NISA for cracking into the Sakura Wars vault. ;)

Won't this make Cross Edge the first PS3 exclusive jrpg to come over to the west (and like the third total)? Kinda sad, really. Atelier Rorona can't come over too soon.

Are you excluding SRPGs? Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles? I'm probably just misreading you, though.

I'm fairly certain that Disgaea/Ar Tonelico fans would've been interested in this game regardless of the quantity and/or quality of PS3 JRPGs available. Most of the people posting in this thread are probably from that demographic.

I've seen the videos and liked what I saw. I like the characters from all the series. And I actually liked Spectral Force 3 on Xbox 360.

Should I still get this?

I was interested in grabbing this, but NISA's falling localization standards (especially in licensed titles) in general have left me quite disillusioned as a fan of theirs. Ar tonelico II's bugs, horrendous localization of non-voiced dialogue/text, and NISA's non-action toward them was the final nail in the coffin of me ever blindly pre-ordering their licensed titles again.

Is there any word on the quality of the text localization of this one?

Sounds like it's for you. Welcome to the very small party.

I guess that one concern of mine is if there'd be any spoilers revealed by playing Cross Edge without having played some of the works the characters have been derived from. Is there any risk of this?

For example, I own Disgaea, but haven't played it yet. Should I be wary of playing this?

I'd instead be asking the question of why do you have Disgaea and still haven't played it yet. And also why would you then be playing this before that?

Because my backlog is ginormous (from JRPGs alone. Not counting other genres) and I keep getting distracted by new releases. Right now, I'm in the middle of Tales of Vesperia as far as JRPGs go.

I'd pop this in before Disgaea only because I'm a Morrigan fanboy.

Morrigan is a fair enough answer.

It's a fanservice game, and one that tends to kinda assume you know who all the characters are. They've all shown up with a basic, "sup, dudez" kind of introduction so far, and unless they delve into the back stories, I think the game's story kinda takes precedence, which is to say if you don't know who they are ahead of time, the game's not going to do much for you beyond some character profiles.

It's clear they took inspiration from Gust's item creation stuff, but the depth (at least early on) doesn't seem to be on par, which is weird considering it's just crafting. I'm with your girl, though; Ar Tonelico II's battle system was one of the best straight turn-based JRPG set-ups I've played in ages. This one? Eh, not so much. Hope you enjoy diving into a handful of menus to check out where players can attack on that grid before you move them or risk blowing a turn. And in some battles, that can mean the end.

Nice that Prinnies finally got a chance to be truly badass in this game, frustrating though it will probably be for some.

I really hope they include the Japanese voice overs in the NA version.

It's dual language. Also, you can re-listen to dialogue lines from a separate menu if that's your thing.

vvv If it's any consolation, it's not made abundantly clear by playing the game at first either. vvv

This may sound horrible to most people, but I think it's partly encouraging. Regarding the "that can mean the end", did you play on "hard" difficulty?
Anyway, the reason I'm rather positive about the combat is that Rykomatsu said that it's fun once you figure it out. I can deal with a steep (or even extreme) learning curve -- in fact I prefer that to another boring warm-over of an existing system. Of course, a novel and immediately fun system like AT2's is best, but I don't expect that here.

Well, I like it a lot. This (or an option to replay specific parts of the game like in TWEWY) is actually something more JRPGs should do.

Really looking forward to this game, but the battle screen looks fucking confusing.

I love it :lol (part of a Korean screenshot, it seems impossible to find full-res ones of the english version)

I just saw that there is a lengthy post on the ps blog today about Cross Edge.

On the battle system:
Cross Edge has a unique hybrid battle system that combines a classic RPG setup with an intuitive grid-based SRPG style. In battle, a square grid will appear beneath the units, and players can move their characters around during their combat phase. Some units are better at close combat and others at ranged combat, so players must strategically move their units to battle enemies. Enemy units will also move around the grid in order to defeat you, so you will have to be alert at all times to fight effectively.
There's also information about the trophies (The Hikikomori...) and planned DLC (costumes among other stuff, I knew it!).

This reminds me of the photoshopped screenshot in one of the BlazBlue threads with 15 gauges on the screen that people couldn't tell was a fake for about 3 pages. :lol

i wonder what the ratio of folks buying this thinking it will be a good game VS those getting it just because of the fanservice is

It's an Idea Factory game, so I don't think anyone thinks it's going to be very good.
