I just got my first "real" camera last week (Nikon D60) and took it with me yesterday to take some pictures on the 4th. I'm new to taking pictures but really excited to learn more about photography. Credit goes to threads like these for piquing my interest.

what do you mean by this? i've never heard this phrase before.

futureman: you shoot canon right? i think ideally one wants a short macro for this product stuff, but what about a cheap(-ish) set of ext tubes as a stopgap?

Some light meters have the ability to take samples from multiple points of the set and give you an average of what your settings should be. We didn't do that. We metered each individual shot.

i still don't know what you mean. do you mean you chimped the shots?

=O Gorgeous!

Thanks! I'm happy how the foreground leaves came out, they were more or less "in the way" at the time. Fortunately they added interest to the shot.

Done with tripod or handheld? I couldn't get good firework pics over the weekend but then again I wasn't nearly that close to the good stuff

Nice shot killertofu

Just got through processing my fireworks shots.
Some I took from St Edwards in Austin, looking at Zilker park several miles away.

is anyone interested in having a second longer-term photo assignment run in parallel with the current ~2wk assignments? probably something like an assignment per month for those of us who can almost never manage to make 2wk terms.

I would be interested. The shorter assignment could probably be made a week long or something too since length wouldn't be an issue.

I'm down with anything that encourages me to get out with my camera more often. I haven't been shooting enough lately.

Considering how much participation is dropping in the current assignments, I don't think this would work well. Then again, I didn't think the assignments would work at all when mrkgoo first suggested them, so what do I know?

my feeling is that the terms on the current assignment are too short, and that's hurting participation. i think it might help to have a) two concurrent prompts at any one time and b) an assignment that's more like a workshop than a contest. hence, proposal:

assignment term:

-exactly one month, ending on the last day of each month. no more forgetting the deadline!

-users are encouraged to post works in progress, comments/constructive criticism on works in progress and current entries, and all manner of discussion for the assignment during the month. yes, even users who don't and never plan on entering!

entries:

-photographic response to prompt. this may be a diptych, triptych, n-ptych, or whatever else you'd like, but it should be photographic and created during the assignment term in response to the prompt.

-new prompt for next assignment. ideally not a repeat.

-(optional but encouraged) note on photo, either technical or otherwise. eg, lighting diagram, story, whatever.

judging:

-critics (that's everyone) have two votes for best new assignment prompt with the same tallying method as the current assignment voting.

-voting will only last 2-3 days at most, to get the new assignment rolling as quickly as possible.

-no voting for photos. instead, discuss the entries. discussion of both technical and aesthetic merits are welcome. try to be constructive, obviously.

enforcement of rules:

-honor system. zero tolerance for bitching about people who may or may not be breaking the rules unless it's very very clearly completely ludicrous and blatantly insults the workshop environment (eg, entry is widely distributed lolcatz photo).

one additional possibility is that we could run entries on flickr in the same way as the strobist bootcamps. my instinct on this is that we'll end up with less entries this way though.

Honestly, I think what's been hurting the assignment threads lately has been the themes been chosen. I know for me, in the beginning, I loved the assignment threads because they presented a force to push me outside my boundaries of comfort as a photographer. I liked having themes I was uncomfortable with and that forced me to contemplate photography more. They were very technical for me, early on.

Recently, though, the assignments have become more and more about who can come up with the most clever interpretation of the theme. There's very little in the way of stretching our technical know-how and ability, and, most importantly, little to learn.

The current theme is fine, but it encourages us to fall back into the same ol' type of photography we're used to. When I picked themes (self portrait, people, black and white, etc...), I tried to pick themes that might make people uncomfortable, to make them think about what it is to be a photographer. The only recent theme I can think of that did this was 'still life'.

I'm afraid it's exactly this attitude that's turned me right off ever contributing again. People started taking it too seriously, creating rules, forming cliques... First it started on matters of taste, then it spread to all the technical aspects of our photos... I hate to have to be blunt about it, but none of us are really 'that' good. I liked it better when it was just "no rules, do whatever you want, have fun".

while i agree, i think the most important thing w/rt themes is diversity and accessibility. for example, while "sports shots" might be pushing the envelope for almost all of us, i'm not sure how many would have the opportunity or inclination to do some good authentic sports shooting that isn't an artsy treatment of NHL 2001 for dreamcast on their tv. so my high level idea for themes is to have some that are more like instructables than prompts (eg, (how to) build an indoor studio, (how to) blend exposures for high DR landscapes, etc) in addition to the traditional potshot phrase.

most importantly, i guess, i'd like it to be a truly open ended workshop in that the theme is really just a suggestion for those who need inspiration to do guided shooting, and for the monthly thread to serve more as a productive workshop for the month's shooting. so, i'd really like the heart of the thread to be comments (eg, "i think you should push your boundaries a bit, how about doing this instead") on posted work, where the assignment structure just constrains the amount of work posted so that it's more comment-able (unlike the quarterly threads).

also in that sense, the voting for next theme is just a formality. we could go ahead and list everyone's next theme ideas anyway as possible inspiration in case the winner doesn't really move you to shoot.

you shouldn't feel any need to be particularly diplomatic about this point. it is basic fact that none of us are particularly good and the only point to any "rules" anywhere on the board should be to get more people involved.

I guess we both just wanted different things from the assignment threads. They started around the time I first picked up a camera and got into photography, so to me they've always been about learning.

I'm not too sure about the cliques and rules, though. I've never really felt that way about them.

I'd definitely be interested in this.

In the eight assignments since Assignment 62, we've averaged 12 entries. In the eight assignments leading up to and including Assignment 62, we averaged 17 (both figures rounded.) What's so special about Assignment 62? AlternativeUlster. (It's not that I want to place blame on anyone, even AU, it's just that I think everyone knows what I'm talking about when I mention him.)

In that thread, several regular contributors were called out, in my opinion, unfairly. One specifically was mocked and another was treated incredibly dismissively. Neither has contributed since. It was the polar opposite of constructive criticism, it was destructive. sprsk's defense of telling people "you suck" and AU's showing ScientificNinja's photo out of context to his friends were especially galling examples. I don't know how to handle that (there's relatively free speech on this board and people suck) other than to say that the vast majority of the participants in the assignment threads aren't destructive douchebags and that I wish they would participate again.

While there certainly are cliques and the mere existence of such may dissuade some people from participating, I think ScientificNinja is exaggerating a bit how much influence they have.

Also, although I've been reluctant to say this in the face of the "Great topic!" posts, but I agree with aidan that several recent topics have kind of sucked, my own Copycat assignment first among them. The Spirituality topic was about as appropriate for this board as an Atheism topic would be on a religious board. Personally, I was so unenthused about the Pick Up Post topic that I immediately grabbed my camera and took the first thing that came to mind just to be done with it. The most recent topic, Famous Song Title, was a direct repeat of Assignment 14, Song Title, and kind of a repeat of Assignment 7, Movie/TV/Book Title. One of the reasons I'm not jazzed by the prospect of longer assignments is that I'm too afraid of getting stuck for a month on a lackluster topic.

Another factor that may, or may not, be influencing the participation is timing. I took forever to compile the votes from #62, then we waited for lunarworks until we finally suggested Great King Bowser start the next thread, then I extended my shitty topic, which led to mrkgoo extending his topic to get us back on our previously regular schedule. You would think this would just give more time for people to enter, but really, 10-14 days should be enough that someone who is going to enter, will. Getting off the schedule takes away from the momentum of the assignments.

Maybe people are over the idea of assignments and would be more enthused by fart's workshop idea.

So what to do, what to do...? I don't know, maybe we should've taken a harder approach against AU's and sprsk's destructive criticism. Perhaps we can encourage whoever "wins" the current assignment to seriously consider the next topic. Or possibly, we're just in a slump of participation, like we've had before, and we'll soon come back as flush with participants as we have before.

On another note...

fart, you've been complaining about voting and the assignments for two years now, there's no law that says you can't start your own thing. So just do it. I'm not sure what, beyond the longer time frame, is so different about the current assignments, so I easily imagine I might participate. All I'd personally ask is that you don't actively try to fuck with the regular assignments which have been going on nicely for over two and a half years now.

I know I haven't been contributing nearly as long as some people. But really I feel like this could easily be done in the Quarterly threads. Maybe I have a different idea of what these threads should be but it just seems like for the most part these threads are just for posting pictures for people to look at and beyond that not much goes on. Of course on occasion people ask for help with something or specifically ask for feedback. Or someone posts an amazing shot and several people compliment it.

I believe this is the most discussion I have seen in these threads since I have started posting in them, and its not even about this thread OR about any pictures in this thread.
Case in point, there are 54 posts on this page if you read gaf in awesome mode, of those theres about 33 posts containing at least one picture of those i believe theres three pictures that were commented on and i do believe those compliments for a particular shot.
Like i said maybe its just me but I think these threads would be a lot better as a comments and criticisms threads than just a thread were people just post their latest pictures.

That said I would love this idea. I started with black and white film in high school and had a class on it in which we would develop our own film and make our own prints. But, beyond that I just got my first DSLR this year so i have been reading everything i can find on the technical side and the compositional side of photography. So I would really like workshops, as well as feed back on pictures.

I also like the assignment threads as well, if for nothing else most people provide real, good feed back. I had several ideas for the song title one but was just too busy to actually contribute.

Just my 2 cents.
