REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo has provided staycations to thousands of people nationwide since the July 26 launch of its Wii Sports Resort™ game. More than 500,000 units of the game for the Wii™ console sold in the United States through Aug. 3, according to Nintendo’s internal tracking numbers. The collection of 12 fun resort-themed sports lets players of all ages escape to a tropical island for some year-round summer fun. The game comes with one Wii MotionPlus™ accessory, which brings unmatched accuracy to games that have been specially designed for it.

“Through Monday we sold one copy of Wii Sports Resort roughly every 1.5 seconds continuously since it launched in the United States,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “This tells us consumers were eagerly waiting to get their hands on these fun activities, and it’s a great start for a game that will have long-lasting appeal.”

Wii Sports Resort includes archery, Swordplay, table tennis, basketball, golf, bowling, Air Sports, Power Cruising, Frisbee®, cycling, canoeing and wakeboarding. The game is easy enough for novices to pick up but contains a tremendous amount of variety and depth to keep veteran players and their friends and family members entertained for hours on end.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.

Wii Sports Resort is available at a suggested retail price of $49.99. Additional Wii MotionPlus accessories are available at a suggested retail price of $19.99 each. For more information about Wii Sports Resort, visit www.WiiSportsResort.com.

no surprise here i guess

The scary thing is I don't think the "Wii Sports Resort" effect has even really kicked in to North America yet.

The way this game is really going to sell is those 500,000 people are going to take the game home, invite friends/family member(s) over and then those people are going to get hooked on it and want their own copy and then the cycle repeats over and over again.

This thing is an absolute killer for parties/summer bbqs.

Damn. I guess there goes any chance of me scoring a copy off of eBay for 20 USD. :( Still though, I am happy for Ninty!

Love this game.

It's funny. Third parties have made so many terrible minigame collections over the past few years that I forgot how awesome a collection of minigames can be in the hands of a skilled developer. This game proves that this genre doesnt have to be shovelware, it just takes effort.

There was a time when my heart swelled with pride, these days whenever i read stuff like this i just go ahhhhhhhhhhh its Nintendo

They're going to get more soon...my girlfriend and I are buying our copies this weekend.
They should bring the Black Wii out and bundle it with WSR; then, it'll be like Wiimania 2008 redux.

Wow, WSR might beat out NCAA Football. Good game Nintendo.

Might ? I doubt that the 360 Version of NCAA will sell more than 500K....

Last year it sold almost 400000 in the July NPD charts. Please note that the number NoA posted also includes Canadian sales.

Huh, twice they used United States and not North America in the PR...

where does it say that?

I was able to walk into a store on launch day and pick up my copy so I figured this might not see great sales right off the bat. How wrong I was!

Congrats Nintendo! \ ^___^ /

So what are the chances that it is the best-selling game of the month for NPD? Did anything else as noteworthy come out?

I only recently started seeing TV ads for it. The launch definitely seemed more low key than Wii Fit which had like billboards in Times Square.

well they did have the times square blowout, so maybe they see that as just as effective

this is the most embarrassing post
Perhaps, but I am low on funds. :( All I can do now is hope to get one of those 10 USD off amazon.com codes in the mail. Still, it is selling better than I anticipated for its first couple of days, keep it up!

It's not their big holiday title. I think they just want people to know it's there, comes with a Motion+, and have it always available for when people decide they need it.

OK boys, let's get to work.

Find the posts were people repeated that WSR wouldn't do well. It's time to serve some crow. Go, go!

People really expected this game to do poorly?

I would hope (for GAF's sake) that even the naysayers simply predicted it wouldn't move hardware.

It's been so long since a Nintendo console game had a huge out of the gate start here in the states, it's actually kind of refreshing.

I'm looking forward to playing the Frisbee game at the very least.

It's too bad NPD doesn't count DD games. It would be a pretty major feather in the cap of digital distribution to see Battlefield 1943 sitting on the top of the charts, beating out such a major contender as this.
