-Engadget hands on-

Release: February/March 2010

Sounds pretty nice. I have zero experience with Sony brand handsets. I know the ericsson models have been around a while. But they have never been on Verizon. I've been a Verizon user since I first started using mobile phones.

Its on my watch list.. Looking to upgrade from my old-old W880i. :P

But I dont know how practical a touch screen is in my line of work.

Looks like a nice phone but why Android 1.6 when it's being released next year?

There is a lot of custom development for this phone and the development could have started on 1.6 before 2.0 was on the roadmap.

What I don't get is, why aren't all the new devices shipping with 2.0? What's the deal there?
Apparently they said you can upgrade to 2.0 down the line after its release, who knows when that'll be though.
I was really looking to get one but the price tag is way too high to justify buying a phone (for me).
Also I don't want to be stuck with At&t, was really hoping for T-mobile coverage.

I really am having a hard time understanding why this phone is generating so much hype.

It's going to be extremely expensive (~$900 w/o contract in Europe)
That UI looks inconvenient to actually use
All the hands-on impressions so far have been fairly negative about the performance
S-E has a pretty bad recent history of supporting their devices, making you wonder whether it will get Android 2.0 in any reasonable timeframe
Still months away
No trackball or d-pad, and non-standard number of buttons

There are actually some pretty sizable differences between Android 1.x and 2.0, upgrading the phone could potentially introduce problems. If they are running a tight schedule they may opt to release as is and upgrade to Android 2.0 at a later date (like the Droid Eris)

it's 13 years old, but I still give S-E credit for ensuring that they will always have the ugliest phone ever made.

It may not be for everyone, but for those that do, the hardware is very very sexy, at least that's what got me interested. Best looking smartphone device if you're not into the completely round and curvy surfaces like iPhone and Hero has. But most of your points are valid, still, most people aren't even thinking about those when they first look at the phone.

Hey... that's actually a pretty neat retro-futuristic looking phone.

the performance detractors that i've read so far are pretty much retarded .. i mean it's a snapdragon cpu ffs ... the event they all went to was CLEARLY provided to show the OS was actually inplace, but totally unoptimised.

pretty idioitc to assume the phone would ship like that

I made up my mine to never ever buy any Sony phone again, ever!

Gone through 3 of their "flagship" phone in the last two years, such an over rated products....

SE used to be the best not too long ago, but they have gone to shit recently.

If you want an Android phone, get one of the HTC ones, i have learned my lesson from buying XPERA (WinMo) the thing is they have the best hardware for the phones, but such a crap software and support.

Well, I can't disagree more ;)

X1's panel interface is pretty crappy primarily due to the lag and the time it takes to switch between the panel. And those who are saying X10's interface is all fluff haven't seen X2's yet, tons of useless 3d animations and new panels that does nothing more than provide an extensively animated notification UI and for what?

At least X10's looks like it has a purpose, it's not even that different from what we're already using, messages in a list form and you scroll down to see more? We've been using that for ages instead this time is skinned as "cards", somehow now some people think that's unusable, but the main difference is that it displays less data at one time and it only takes one click to display the full message. Aside from that potentially crappy interface, everything else is makes sense. Infinity view lists all the data from a single contact in instant messaging-like form, and aggregates all the data from messaging, email and social networking sites for that contact. It's present in HTC Sense, no one ever complained it being "inconvenient". Media UI tries to condense more information in a single page by making all them into small square icons, and the other stuff is just standard media UI. It's not even a mandatory UI and you can still use your stock messaging gmail apps and stuff if you want. I'd bet if all the transition elements like stuffs swirling around were removed and everything else remained the same, the same people would have a lot less issues with it.

But only if the UI is actually optimized by the time of the release, which SE doesn't have a good track record of and is worrying. Even if it's not unoptimized? At the bare minimum you still have the stock android experience which I don't see people using the Droid and all the earlier HTC devices complaining about. All the other stuffs like SE potentially dropping software support less than a year in and the high price are still all valid however.

still might go to motorola droid.....the lack of physic keyboard hurts it.

Yeah, if you want a physical keyboard, just get the Droid now, it's great enough. The software is going to be updated anyway.

Get it with a contract.

1) Looks can be deceiving.
2) It's Android. You don't have to use the custom UI.

tokkun said:

The performance of the UI, not the raw performance of the device.

That's my one worry too - 2.0 has too many nice features to want to skip it.

Not many months now...

Shouldn't be a problem for well-written Android apps.

That looks sexy. I love everything about my X1, except the shitty stock rom, but the custom rom I have right now is amazing, just as smooth as any Android phone.

If I didn't get an X1 just recently, I would definitely try to get my hands on this.

I approve of this thread. Adding it to the Links sections now.

Was this confirmed? You can do it for HTC Sense but none of the other UIs as far as I know.

No guarantee it will be offered on contract. It could just be sold unlocked. Even if it is offered on contract, you are not going to get $700 subsidy. It'll still cost hundreds of dollars more than the Droid, iPhone, etc.

Not many months now...

If it is February/March 2010, it's still 3-4 months away. 3-4 months ago, the highest-end Android device available in the US was the MyTouch 3G. A lot can happen in a few months.

Timescape and Mediascape are "apps". Confirmed by what people are saying and showing on the hands on videos at least.

other than the screen and fast processor this phone has never really done much for me.

not a fan of the design of the phone. it looks like an iphone and a droid had a child (obviously sans keyboard).

Nine Hundred US Dollars? Is that a joke? Good lawd.

IIRC that was the rumored Swedish price, 6000 SEK about 860USD, but like always we pay the patented Swedish Exorbitant Prices™.

You guys got PS3 for 599USD, I paid 6500 SEK for mine, or 940USD in todays monies. :lol

So subtract a few (hundred)dollars and you might get closer to the US price.

I just looked on amazon.de, price is 699 euro. In American monies, that´d be 1038 dollar :lol

I really want a better phone than my W850, but the cool ones with big screen and comfortable web browsing are so expensive. And I have a bill of less than 5 euro a month, so getting a phone with an expensive contract isn´t an option.

hat the XPERIA X10 will cost around 6,000 Swedish kronor which equates to around $879 dollars.

Which is what I said, its based of the Swedish price. We always pay more than you guys.

Edit: Guess what the iPhone price is in Sweden? MOAR than the the X10 (if 6000 stays true), according to Prisjakt (checks the best price for whatever item) the best price for the iPhone 3GS 16GB is 8438, which equals 1 216USD according to Google. Wooopsie

I saw the engadget post saying this is probably hitting AT&T next year in the States because of the spectrum they are using. I've really wanted an android phone on AT&T too, but I'm not sure if this is what I want.

Like others have said the price seems outrageous and while the reshuffled UI looks much better for media I'm not sold on it as a whole, and while it will be upgradable I'll feel weird paying that much money for a phone that might not release till say Feb or March that still is only running 1.6 and not 2.0.

I'm looking forward to this but I have a feeling that when this comes out it will be bug laden and outdated. SE always announces their phones too early and by the time they come out people have moved on to something better.

While the hardware still might be great, I think this about sums it up for me greatly in terms of the software and price.

I heard rambles about a future X10 that runs 2.0 and has multitouch...

i just got the x10 and it runs on donut, but sony has already stated that they are working on eclair.

How do you like the phone? Anything annoying about it? Is it slow opening and running any features? I'm still interested in getting one but I haven't really seen any reviews.
