Okay guys, feel free to discuss the movie freely here, without him calling anyone cunts or going into a hulk rampage when someone mentions a piece of concept art other than something he has personally approved to be posted. :lol

Saw the 3D trailer tonight. Lol'd. Looks terribad. What's everyone hotstepping over?

Lol.

I'm really looking forward to it, even though it does kind of seem like Dancing with Smurfs. I expect the story to be somewhat bland, but with James Cameron, it's all about how he takes you through it.

Plus, I'm always up for groundbreaking effects from ILM and WETA.

Beyond this, I know very little of the film, but it's got that James Cameron vibe which makes me very excited.

I won't be seeing it in 3D, as I have no desire to.

Which one was that? The only 3D I've seen of the movie is from the 15 min preview on Avatar Day. It was okay, but I still kinda hate 3D as a serious presentation model. Too distracting and obvious.

Because of your avatar, I'm reading your post in a serial killer's voice and it's scary.

It had who I guess is the main dude and chick just yelling at each other about not going forward or something and then floaty "spirits" climbed all over the dude's body.

It cost like 500 million dollars to make, and is directed by people who made hugely successful movies before (some of which were actually good).

Kinda like the Final Fantasy XIII of the movie world.

Yeah but like, look at the character designs. Seriously? Can't say I've ever seen a Cameron film. No idea what he made outside of Titanic, so meh. I'll quit shitting on everyone's parade, I guess. :lol

I don't get this.

Cameron stopped being relevant to my red blooded action loving self when he fucked off to make chick flicks and Discovery Channel specials.

I hope this movie is the Ivan Drago of his career and breaks him.

You've never seen Terminator 2? Aliens?

For Cameron Sci-fi, watch Aliens, Teminator, and Terminator 2. Three sci-fi movie directed by Cameron. Then come back and let us know wether or not you'll be looking forward to his next sci-fi movie with mother fuckin space marines in mech suits vs. pterodactyls and blue aliens.

People focus too much on the cg and 3d hype and completely forget the fact that this movie is another fuckin sci-fi from Cameron. It's really not that hard to see where the real hype stems from.

Plus, say what you will about Titanic, but it's clear to me and many others that Cameron has mastered the art of action and pacing with that movie. So I'm hoping he continues his great style and pace/direct the action scenes in AVATAR as best as he can. EDIT: To be clear, I'm talking about the pacing of the action scenes. Not the pacing of the movie. Because I hated the Old Rose scenes.

Nope. Not really interested in 'em. (Now, don't go taking that as me trying to make some statement about their quality. 'cause I'm not. :P)

I'm not sure where all the hype is coming from either. And I don't like the character designs of the aliens either. But I'm giving Cameron the benefit of the doubt and regardless of wether I like it or not I hope it's successful for him. It's sure to be CG eye candy at least.

Wow no the pacing was the worst thing about Titanic imo, everything else was good-great but that film could have used some trimming.

Titanic is a fantastic movie. I just don't get the hate. I guess it's just not for some people. It's okay though, the success indicates that it was for most people. :lol

I thought everyone hated the first half but enjoyed when everything went to hell, like sensible people.

You should have read the rest of my post. "I'm hoping he continues his great style and pace/direct the action scenes in AVATAR as best as he can. EDIT: To be clear, I'm talking about the pacing of the action scenes. Not the pacing of the movie. Because I hated the Old Rose scenes."

Yeah, I got everything I needed from Titanic out of the trailer and previously in The Poseidon Adventure.

Did Titanic have Ernest Borgnine? NO!

WHAT THE WHAT? Sit down and watch them right now. My roommate never saw Terminator 2 because he was "not really interested in 'em" and we sat him down and watched it yesterday on Blu-ray. Now he says it's one of the best films he has ever seen and he is 100x more hyped for Avatar.

Why do people assume that because Cameron made good movies a couple decades ago he's in a position to make another good movie? That assumption doesn't work for many directors

I'm not "hating" on Avatar, merely pointing out that it looks like nothing more than a glorified tech demo. The story is tacked on/generic, the art direction is ugly...what exactly am I missing here?

James Cameron's nuts on your chin apparently. :P

Honestly... I think this movie looks bad.

I'm a sucker for good CGI, so I'll still watch it. But I think it looks super cheesy. Hopefully I'm wrong. I do like Cameron, and he's surprised me before.

His track record is just that good. There hasn't been any movie from Cameron that has ever sucked, and he's done quite a number of movies, both original productions and sequels. He has made movies across a huge spectrum of genres, ranging from action comedy, to space scifi, to modern day scifi action, to period drama. He has showcased that he has an amazing eye for the camera, and understands how to use both live action characters, cinematography, and cutting edge visual effects to entertain and thrill audiences of all age, gender and interest groups. Something like this cannot be accidental, so there therefore for people who have been following his work, it is no surprise that him tackling a scifi action adventure film set on an alien world using state of the art visual effects is a very enticing prospect.

I think it's good we have a bit of negativity on these threads to keep the expectations in check. It's only healthy.

The last thread was turning into a bit of a circlejerk.

It wasn't a circlejerk, trust me. It was just Sculli jerking off in everyone's faces. Some of us were so covered with cum that we couldn't say anything negative in fear that he would stick his dick in our mouths as well. :(

I'm not saying it's a 100% guarantee, but it gives me confidence that there is a director behind it that has made action classics. I just hope Avatar is 1/2 as good as Terminator 2.

Interesting imagery.

Uh oh. I'm watching Aliens right now and I just came to the realization that Avatar might SUCK!

Ok so Aliens and Terminator were fuckin awesome... but do you guys remember Titanic. It was a good movie but there WAS some cheesiness in it... especially the romance part. Now Avatar has romance it seems.... which is okay. But we all forget tha James Cameron is an OLD DUDE now.. and if Speilberg and George Lucas has taught us anything.. old dudes make cheesy ass movies. I hope Cameron hasn't turned into a shitty director like those guys have.. but... it's a possibility guys. Watch out!

Was he holding your eyeball open like that one bukkake video I saw heard about? :lol

I admit, I kind of want this movie to not suck; but I'm not counting on anything, and unfortunately nothing I've seen so far has jazzed me.

I'm sorry for the really disturbing, graphic, and honestly disgusting imagery I gave everyone. But that's honestly how I felt in the other thread. :(

I cannot unsee it now. He's got that sinister look of a convicted sex criminal. :lol

posted this in the other thread but it seems this is where the party is now.

This films looks so......... unsubtle. It smashes you over the head with its allegory.

Yellow "future" bulldozers smash over trees. Why that's just like what's happening with the rainforest! Giving those flying machines the trademark Huey "thwop-thwop" blade noise in some shots, complete with M60 door gunners. Using napalm on a giant tree. The stereotypical Colonel. "Savages" with bows and arrows. The suit in the trailer doesn't say "this little rock could power a whole city for a year", he says "this little rock sells for $20 million". MONEY MONEY MONEY! It's all so crudely done.

I'm sure the Navi will be all "we're a simple people, in touch with nature" like Randy from the Native American south park episode. And Worthington will look all barbaric at first, but then surprise them with his inner human strength as he overcomes their trials and customs. And then there'll be the tough brutish Navi leader who'll ride Worthington hard and be all "He's not one of us". And when the humans land he'll be like "I knew we couldn't trust the outsiders! Let's make war" as Worthington pleads to let him go talk to the humans on the Navi's behalf.

Even him falling for the soft spoken female who mourns the death of every flower is cliche. It's like in the movie Gamer where the morality is completely black or white and the bad guys so outrageously evil it makes no sense.

I don't know what special place Cameron has with this kind of sci-fi, because as good as Cameron is as a action director and storyteller, he has never really designed a complete world before. That's where most of the negativity is coming from. It's all subjective of course, but I would rather have Ridley Scott set up the world and have Cameron direct the sequel.

Cameron has never really been subtle though. Terminator 2 was basically about a badass punk delinquent kid who hates his caring step parents, and thinks his mom is a psycho loser who got put away. Then he learns to treasure the ones he cares for, ironically, from a killer robot from the future with no emotions. The boy teaches the robot to cry, and the robot teaches the boy to learn respect and to appreciate what he has. Meanwhile many things blow up, there are crazy chases and a kickass action. We even have a moment where an obsessed computer programmer finds out there's more at stake than just his work, and that the big corporation he's working for is actually selfish and evil and framed an innocent woman by hiding evidence so they can further their own money making research which would eventually DESTROY MANKIND. ZOMG.

Seriously, he's not a subtle writer or director. :lol
