PC Mirror's Edge, CoJ: Bound in Blood sales, modding, and YOU.

Blizzard

Banned
Hi! I hope it's not out of line to make a thread about this. Here's the deal. If you're a PC gamer, you may have noticed that Mirror's Edge is currently $5 USD on Steam, and Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is currently $21 USD on Steam. These prices are good for the next 15 or so hours (it's 7:38 EST for me at the moment).

Now, why am I making this thread? Am I a crazy Mirror's Edge, DICE, EA, Call of Juarez fanboy? Well, not exactly, but sorta! First, let's handle Mirror's Edge. Most people agree that the PC version of Mirror's Edge is a very good version. It has nice graphics, supports keyboard and mouse OR the 360 controller, and runs pretty well without requiring a supercomputer. I think it may be one of the best keyboard and mouse uses I've played, especially for platforming. If you don't like the default controls, you can remap them, of course. How good are the graphics on Mirror's Edge? Pretty good. I'll add another post or two with some screenshots momentarily.

Now, to REALLY answer why I'm making this thread: I saw lots of questions about Mirror's Edge, and some seemed to keep repeating. I'm one of the most active members of what little mod community there is for Mirror's Edge, even though I haven't released a map myself, and I don't really do research anymore.

Answering questions
If you have any questions not answered here, post in the thread, and I'll try to update while the sale is still ongoing.

Does the Steam version have install limits?
As far as I know, there are no install limits, and there is no SecuROM, on the Steam version. On the retail version, I believe there is a 5-install limit, but you can revoke your licenses using the EA tool (unlike even the Steam version of EA's Crysis, ugh).

Does the Steam version support the DLC?
No it does NOT, but see below! You can buy the DLC for $10 from EA's lousy (in my opinion) online store, but you can't even play or install the maps on the Steam version without significant messing around with the files and the editor. When the game itself is only $5 on sale, and especially with the free map pack linked below, I don't think it's worth it. There are quite a few ingame time trial maps in the game itself, anyway.

Modding/mapping

Here are a couple of links (and I don't get any ad revenue from these):
http://on-mirrors-edge.com/forums/index.php -- the Unreal Engine 3 forum has some older information, and the Modding forum has a good bit of mapping stuff.
http://www.touchofrain.com/mirrors_edge/ -- a very rough site in English and French about mapping with Mirror's Edge. I haven't updated it in like 6 months though. :-( The links section should still have lots of useful information. And just in case you start messing with the Unreal Editor and decide you want to do more, there's always the free UDK (http://www.udk.com/) now that gives you the possibility of making high-quality games and selling them yourself, without huge expenses up front.

I have not seen a lot of "modding" per se in terms of replacing character models or changing textures, though texture-changing is apparently possible. Most of the modding that I have seen, and what I am personally interested in, is creating custom maps.

These maps are a little bit clunky to load, since you have to copy files into your Documents folder in a certain directory, and they temporarily override the ingame time trials or story maps. Annoyingly, you want to not log into an EA account while you play them, or else you might get a really low time on the custom map (which will give you a fake low score on the worldwide leaderboards).

Fair warning: As with any mod, you should probably back up your own save and configuration files (from your Documents\EA Games\Mirror's Edge\TdGame directory), just in case anything gets overwritten.

I'll start with some of the highest-quality Mirror's Edge maps I've seen, this time trial map pack by Taplonaplo (http://www.youtube.com/user/taplonaplo):
The download pack should include an install batch file if you don't want to manually copy the files. It should have instructions either way, and I can try to answer any questions you might have about using it. I haven't taken the time to do screenshots from these since I'm making this thread in a hurry.

Answering questions about custom maps
Is there a way to easily install the maps other than copying files? Not at the moment. One user has made a map swapping application on the On Mirror's Edge forums, but I don't think the few maps that are released would support it very well.

Are there a LOT of custom maps? No, and the ones I linked above are probably the best I know of. They're mostly very rough, admittedly. Mirror's Edge was probably my first 3D-mapping experience, so I just wanted to make people aware of them, especially if anyone is interestedin making their own.

Do they support online leadboards? No, and as I mentioned earlier, you don't want to log in to your account before playing them (hitting escape should cancel the login, I think), because you might record unfairly fast times.

Is there anything special about the Steam version of Mirror's Edge and custom maps? Yes, you can get the resource files to run the editor from America's Army 3 (free from Steam). Plus, you can playtest in the editor (in the retail version editor, due to some weird copy protection apparently, Faith dies after running and jumping for a short period of time). As of right now, I am not aware of a way to use the UDK resource files to run the editor, but I have not tested it.

Mirror's Edge screenshot time! If you haven't seen them, I believe these are some of brain_stew's good old screenshots for the PC version:

And just in case you don't have his fancy settings and want to see what it looks like for ordinary mortals, here are some from my machine. I'm using an e8400 at 3.0 GHz, 512MB 4850, 4GB of memory, and mostly 4xAA. Vsync on, and it's fairly smooth in most places.

I could add more, but you get the idea. I haven't resized these, so yeah, they will be jaggy.

Oh, and one more thing to note about Mirror's Edge. One one of the game designers was actually a community contact of sorts for the On Mirror's Edge forums. I was in email contact with him, and they apparently actually had a meeting at DICE to talk about whether they could give support to the people working on getting editor stuff working. Unfortunately, they decided they could/would not, and you can see his response here: http://on-mirrors-edge.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=3260 I don't know whether to blame DICE or EA (I'd like to suspect EA) for not supporting DLC on Steam, but I don't know. At the least, it was nice to have a dev at least acknowledge modders/mappers/fans, and respond in some way. :)

And now for Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood! It's $21, but is it worth it? In my opinion, it is IF you like western cowboy-type games, and you remember to turn on vsync in the .ini or whatever. (Mirror's Edge also has some nasty tearing without vsync) Anyway, someone pointed out that Bound in Blood might drop to $10 in the next month or two, so I can totally understand if someone would want to wait until then. However, here's some info for you still!

The game runs pretty well for me on Windows, about as well or better than Mirror's Edge. With vsync, it's quite smooth. Controls seem decent to me. Some people have complained about the auto-aim, but I believe you can turn that off in harder difficulties (and actually with a more recent patch, on Steam, you can turn it off completely).

Now, why do I like it aside from it being a fun game in a genre that is fairly uncommon?

The developers actually released a patch with some multiplayer updates, and options fixes (including the auto-aim options, I -think-), on Steam, instead of totally abandoning the game. That seems like that should be expected of publishers, but hey, not everyone does it. I don't think they added dedicated server support, but I'm not totally sure.

More than that, though, they actually carried through with their promise of releasing the editor, AFTER the retail game release. They even have video tutorials, and a website devoted to sharing maps and whatnot. And unlike Mirror's Edge, they're pretty simple to install and play ingame. There are both multiplayer and singleplayer custom maps, though I've only tried a few personally.
http://www.cojmodding.com/ -- main modding site, including the editor download and a fair number of maps
http://www.cojmodding.com/?id=maps&search=&submit=search&cat=Single -- if you don't want to try the multiplayer (which may well be abandoned by now), you can still try these single-player maps!

My post below has some screenshots. In addition, http://store.steampowered.com/app/33290/ has a demo you can try. What's funny is that I'm partway through Bound in Blood and I'm not even sure I have played that level. :lol

And how about mods? Well, like I mentioned, there are some tutorial on the site itself...but if you don't like making maps, here are some shots from things other people have made:

I tried the last one myself, and though it is rather obviously fanmade and has some graphics issues in areas, it's still pretty neat.

And hey, if you want to wait until you see it for $10 and pick it up then...now you know some of what you can expect!

Me too, but for $5 I figured I might as well. I hear the keyboard and mouse controls are great and the PhysX stuff looks very nice (if you have a PhysX card anyway).

Thanks for this. Lack of DLC support is the only thing holding me back from buying it today, but it looks like it's still worth it.

The general impression I have seen is that if you like it, and you haven't played it to death, then yes, it's as good or better on the PC, due to better graphics and keyboard/mouse controls. Your mileage may vary!

From what I could gather, it's not worth it. Apparently you can't claim DLC if you purchased the game through Steam.
Covered in detail, above. And who wants to pay $10 for DLC when the game is $5. :P

Also, I just updated with some Call of Juarez screenshots. If anyone has any questions about either of the games, post away. Hopefully this helps give some people some food for thought now, or if either of the games goes on sale in the future. Have fun playing/modding!

ONE NOTE I FORGOT TO MENTION: Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is a prequel to the original Call of Juarez game. So if you play the original first, you kinda know how this one will end. :P

Wow. 3€ for Mirror's Edge. That's like, the price of a Double Cheeseburger oO. I would double dip if I hadn't played it to death already.

Yea the full game is totally not worth it when you can't get nickel and dimed for some crappy time trial maps.

God I hate this generation of gaming. So goddamn much.

Big thanks to Blizzard for helping me out with the ME Steam sale with a nice Christmas gift. Let it be known he is awesome and does awesome things.

I'll post back here with any impressions of the game I think of.

IMO the keyboard/mouse controls take the game to another level. It just feels way more natural and faster compared to playing with a controller. Not to mention the game looks amazing maxed out.

For fuck's sake, YES. $5 for a 60fps version of ME is a steal...if you have the hardware to pull it off that is.

BTW...don't forget to mention that there's a free PC demo for CoJ should you want to try before you buy. Visuals definitely look top notch for it.

Not realizing it was on sale for $5 I just picked this up; however, Steam is running ~20 KB/s right now, anyone else having problems?

Thanks, I'll mention that. The original game (sequel storywise) isn't that bad either, especially in DX10 mode, though some sections are rough. For some reason the newer one doesn't support DX10 as far as I know.

*edit* If your Steam downloads are slow, there's a fair chance that it's because of everyone buying and downloading cheap games this weekend. :P You can try changing your download server in settings, though. I think there's even a chart somewhere of what servers are busiest, though I don't have the link. You can also try pausing and resuming the download.

Doh, I didn't even think of that. That's probably the case. Thanks for setting things straight!

I'm currently downloading Mirror's Edge on Steam as we speak, though with my crappy 3Mb line, it's going take a while.

I'm so happy I get to play it with my 360 controller, a gamepad is just so much more comfortable for me.

I damn near hated the game at first. Then I switched to keyboard + mouse.

Thinking of grabbing ME as $5 is too tempting. I'm a total keyboard/mouse spaz though. I can't just use my 360 controller with the play & charge USB wire, can I? I think I also have a USB adapter for the original Xbox controller as well. Would that work?

I bought my 360 controller for my PC, but it has a disconnect thing with a round jack before the part with the USB. If that's what you're talking about, and if your PC can detect the controller (go into your control panel and look around for game controllers after you plug it in), then it should work with a good many PC games.

I got the feel for the game with the gamepad from the many playthroughs with the demo and plus I just can't get into keyboard and mouse controls that well at all.

But the nice thing is, we can have both, and BOTH be happy! If anyone turns this thread into keyboard/mouse versus 360 controller, I will be very put out. VERY PUT OUT. :D

I want to pick this up but Im not sure I'll be able to run it and make it worthwhile.
I got a
Intel Core Duo T7250 @ 2.0 Ghz
3.00 GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS
Vista 32 - Bit

Anybody know if it's worth the double dip with these specs?

Funny thing is, I only played the demo early this year and wasn't too wowed by it, though the graphics were beautiful.

Then, out of nowhere, I had a dream about it two nights ago.

Then this deal today.

It's destiny.

Not crappy. At all. And time trials are the best part of the game.

<3<3 Mirror's Edge <3<3

I just picked it up, but Bound in Blood is pretty damn good so far. Nothing extraordinary, but the story really pushes the game along nicely. Sort of like the first game.

The graphics are absolutely absurd for how well the game runs.

You guys should try switching the download server in the Steam settings. I was using NY server (I live in Philadelphia), which was going at a snails pace. Switching it to Chicago got me back to my normal 20 Mbps.

Will do, cause holy crap, 3MB ain't much but I was hitting well over 300kb/sec earlier today re-downloading my other Steam games but ME was like 25kb/sec!

Yeah, I think I'll grab it even though I played it to death on 360. For $5 it's worth it just for the better visuals and m+kb controls. Nice thread Blizz. You make the custom maps sound like a hassle though.. copying files isn't that big of a deal is it?

I don't want to get people's hopes up. Most of the custom maps are pretty rough, and you'd have to look at instructions etc. to get them running, kind of like Left 4 Dead campaigns early on. The map pack that I linked first (see the trailer) is probably the most convenient and actually includes a batch file installer, but you should still probably back up the directory I mentioned that contains your save and config files. Custom maps (if they're copied in your Documents folder) will just override the game maps, and not actually overwrite the files, so all you have to do is move/delete the custom map when you're finished with.

I remembered looking into Mirror's Edge modding a little while back, are they still having the problem where if they make the level last too long, the game automatically kills the player?

That's only on the retail version, and it's only when you playtest your level in the editor. Apparently some really bizarre side effect of SecuROM/copy protection. In both retail and Steam versions, you can play as long as you want ingame. :)

RE5 isn't on sale anymore, but I -guess- you can link your mod videos, since that's kinda on topic. :P

Non modded. Just got the game. :P

Too bad, they're already here. You can't take it back. Nanana!

I do plan on modding after I beat it again. To keep this slightly on topic the last page of the RE5 thread has some modded resources!

Mirror's Edge was my first Platinum Trophy. I pumped hour upon hour into it, came close to controller-hurling rage on the Chapter 2 and 9 Speed Runs, but I managed it. After that I was pretty much burnt out. I downloaded the DLC when it became free on the PSN, but I couldn't work up the interest to play it and I'd lost most of my skills.

Still, how could I afford not to buy it again at $5? I haven't done the maths, but I'm pretty sure that's so cheap I actually saved money. I've always thought Mirror's Edge was a gorgeous game stuck deep in Aliasing Hell, so it'll be nice to see it smoothed out and 60FPSerised.

Actually I thought they were some of the more interesting time trials in the game. Ditching the urban aesthetic and letting the levels be completely free-form really opened up more interesting gameplays options, IMO.
