Yeah, basically what the title says. I don't like bullet hell games, please post only good old shmups, and preferably for PC(if any exist :P).

To get you started, here is my favourite:

Jets 'n' Guns
You have a Jet, and some guns, most bullets on screen are the players's. Game is pretty challenging without the need to have the bullet hell.

ChoRenSha 68k - awesome Japanese freeware shmup, not sure if you'd consider it too manic, but it's free so give it a go;

http://www2.tky.3web.ne.jp/~yosshin/my_works/index.html

Warning Forever - another Japanese freeware game, this one is a series of increasingly difficult boss battles with the unique twist that the next boss will adapt itself to defend against your previousley used strategy;

http://www18.big.or.jp/~hikoza/Prod/ (it's further down the page, Rayhound's pretty good too).

I don't know where you draw the line for bullet hell, but I wouldn't necessarily consider his games in that category.
Well, if I don't have to be pixel-perfect to beat the game, like, let's say, in these videos below, I'm good.

The original classic, Raptor: Call of the Shadows. If I had to naively guess, I'd label it the X-Com of shmups.

One of my favorites.

Both of these games are fantastic.

Raptor is such a great game... I still love this game, it's just so playable and fun. Nice graphics, good music, fun gameplay... it's a bit easy unless you make it hard on yourself by not saving between levels or something, but still, it's a great game. I really like the money and shop aspects, they add something to the game that almost no other shmups have.

After Raptor the same people went on to make Demonstar and the two Demonstar: Special Missions titles, which are simpler games that ditch the money and shop aspects in favor of standard pick-up-the-powerups stuff. I like Raptor more, but they're decent enough to try. You can get them all at www.mking.com , or the demos (Win95 versions) at least for sure... I haven't tried ordering the full versions and the site hasn't updated in several years, sadly. Still, the site is still there, so it's likely they're still available. :)

There were lots of shmups back in the DOS shareware days, if you look you'll find bunches of them... other than Raptor, the most popular would be Tyrian, which is freeware as Tyrian 2000. That one's definitely recommended. Apogee's shmups Stargunner and Major Stryker, both also pretty good games, are also both freeware ( www.3drealms.com ).

There are just so many PC games out there, I could never hope to mention everything...

As for other games, Kenta Cho's games are definitely recommended. They're all simple, stylish, and interesting games with different game mechanics and a pretty high level of quality.

Unfortunately, while there used to be a great site listing virtually every PC shmup called Shoot the Core (it focused on modern Japanese doujin shmups and such, but had many of the older PC games as well), it vanished earlier this year... all that I can find of it are these links:

Tyrian 2000. Upgrade Mania, Many Levels, 2 Player and many many hidden modes!!!

It is awesome and FREEEEEE!

Oh, I played this on a 386 about 15 years ago :) Awesome. Thanks.

Also, I tried cho ren sha, it looks awesome, definately going to play it more.

Cho Ren Sha 68k has already been mentioned and the OP specified no bullethells so I think I'm out.

Hmm well there is Kamui I believe. It reminds me of Layer Section and I remember it being rather great.

(I haven't owned a working PC in over three years) =(

Played a bit of Tyrian, it's nice, but its no Raptor! Thanks for the link looks like it will be fun

DoDonPachi + Mame is far and away your best option. DDP is my favorite shmup, and not too manic; by today's standards, it is pretty reasonable actually. Simple, and fun as hell.

Steel Saviour has fantastic hand-drawn graphics but I hate the game design (no popcorn enemies and you ship is too slow and vulnerable). There's a demo, so give it a try.

It is impossible to praise Tyrian highly enough. It's a huge game, even without taking into account the absurd number of secrets (which run the gamut from levels to graphical settings to fighting game commands for your ship) and alternate modes (and secret alternate modes, one of which is a completely different game). The amount of potential ship builds is staggering and will keep you playing again and again. The music is by Alexander Brandon, living god. And it's funny; interspersed between the bits of the mostly coherent plot are advertisements, contest promotions, public service announcements, travel guides, and all sorts of other bits of fluff the denizens of a future far-off galaxy might find themselves inundated with, all written surprisingly well.

Raptor is good fun. Tyrian can be played forever.

Oh god the memories... Raptor and Tyrian were some of my favourite games ever back then.

If I just could remember the name of a sidescrolling shmup where you controlled some kind of a bird. It was on Amiga 500.

Thanks to this thread I got to try Tyrian. Nice one. I'm on a Mac so I'm using a mouse and it is a little floaty. Is it possible to use any of the arcade sticks on a Mac, with a driver? I plugged a couple of PS360 sticks in but none of them work.

Any of these shumps support gamepads?

Most shmups on the PC have native gamepad support, yeah, either in DOS games (through DOSBox gamepad emulation) or Windows. For whichever don't use something like xpadder.

It is possible to praise Tyrian too much, because Raptor is the better game. :) Tyrian's good, but I always found it nowhere near as good as Raptor... I always was on the Apogee side of the Apogee-Epic wars. Epic's stuff was great, but Apogee's was even better.

Sure, Tyrian is probably a longer, harder game, but Raptor is just so ridiculously fun that I never cared. First, Raptor has better graphics and art design; Tyrian doesn't even come close really. Both have good music, but Raptor's is better. As for gameplay, Raptor's a bit more approachable I think because it isn't quite as complex in terms of ship customization, but it's still got a good bit of it with all the weapons and armor, and the key fact that you also have to heal your ship and buy/replace shields with that money as well. I still find Raptor an incredibly fun game and play some of it every so often, but Tyrian... haven't played it much in years.

I just played Raptor over, and over, and over instead... I wouldn't be surprised if in my main file I looped it eight or ten times. :) Started on Easy, then the difficulty level was increased each time you win until you're on the top setting, and from there it just loops on that.

I just checked, my main Raptor file has $7,355,790. That's quite a lot. :) (Anyone else make more than that? I wanted to reach into the 10 million range at one point, but hit a bar where I'd not make more money than I had to spend on shield replacements, so I kind of stalled...)

Came here to post this, excellent shmup.

Also, you can't forget the indie scene. Indie/doujin shmups are massive on the PC. One of the best I've played has actually reached 1.0 release recently: Genetos. It can sort of be compared to Space Invaders Infinity Gene, in that it's a walk through shmup history of sorts.

PLAY IT

On the Japanese side of things... there's the free game, rRootage, made by some guy. It has tons of levels/difficulties, so you can play leisurely, or you can play it like a bullet curtain game.

Personally, I don't like Tyrian nearly as much as other shmup games, as I feel like that getting hit is inevitable and the pacing is odd... but it is a pretty good game. For those who can and have the Homebrew Channel, try Tyrian on the Wii. It's a pretty great port.

Now, Raptor... I loved that game as a kid, but I only ever played the Shareware version. I need to see if I can buy it from somewhere. But seriously... Raptor was great.

Well, if I don't have to be pixel-perfect to beat the game, like, let's say, in these videos below, I'm good.

Nothing wrong with preferring less bullets, but the "bullet hell is automatically harder" attitude comes from people that haven't played many shooters.

just fyi

More on topic, I'm not huge on all of the doujin stuff, but Cho Ren Sha is definitely pretty great. Nothing beats all the masterpieces you can play in MAME, though, of course. Well, save for newer arcade stuff not yet in MAME, potentially.

Mame.

Would take a lifetime to play through and properly enjoy the past 20 years of arcade shmups.

Personally I prefer a PCB or an arcade perfect console port (or a 100,000X better than arcade 360 Cave port. Those are a gift from god.)

This is beyond true.

I'll take a bullet hell over a game with less bullets but a hitbox the size of the ship. I'm spoiled by recent cave games, where the hitbox is represented by a glowing heart in the middle of the character. It's hard for me to play a bullet hell or even any shmup really that doesn't have that nowadays.

Kamui from Siterskain is very fun. I've only played the demo though. Don't know how to get a hold of a full version.

A lot of Siterskain's games are really good.
