Ok, so backlog threads have been done. This one is a bit different, I hope.

Apparently I'm not the only one feeling a bit overwhelmed by my backlog after that Steam sale: until about an hour ago I had no idea where to start. Until someone in a stroke of brilliance recommended burning through it in alphabetical order. Which is exactly what I'm doing, beginning with Alpha Prime.

Anyone care to join me? We can post our progress in this thread. My New Years resolution, as could be yours, is to make a significant dent - if not finish it (120 games...) - by next New Years. If you need to deviate for a game or two don't sweat it. Remember the golden rule of rehab: a moment of weakness does not mean you failed your goal. Buy it, finish it, and keep at it.

I'll join in on this! Atleast for my steam games. Started Bioshock last night actually, the first game in my list.

I'll post my full list in a bit when I hop on my pc.

Steam Games:

Bioshock
The Last Remnant
Torchlight
The Witcher

Resurrecting this thread cause I recently wrote up my backlog. I have even more Steam games that I'm not even going to get to until I clear some of this out. :-(

I'm going to put off the games that I started that I'm not really feeling. Maybe I'll play them sometime down the line.

Fallout 3 Broken Steel and Point Lookout - started but haven't played in a while. Its hard!
Dragon Age Origins - going to put it off for now. Not feeling it though I'm halfway through
Tales of Monkey Island - Only finished Ep. 1. Going to try to power through!
Mass Effect 1 - Want to start this soon. Maybe after Monkey Island.
Mass Effect 2 - When I finish ME1
Darksiders - want to play, but might have to put off for a while.
Castlevania LoS - Chapter 9 or 10 of 12, probably finish this after I finish my rental (Dead Space 2)
Shadow Complex - Haven't played in a loooong time. I'll eventually get back to it.
Kingdom Hearts BBS - my current portable game. Love it. But might put off to power through Ghost Trick.
Ghost Trick - Read above.
Persona 3 FES - Playing every once in a while on PCSX2. I don't know if I'll ever beat it!
BoF Dragon Quarter - after P3
Rogue Galaxy - After P3

I started seriously digging into my backlog in June of last year.

I'm doing a blog to keep me honest, and allowing no new game purchases until I beat every game on my list. 75 games to go.

I had that same resolution.

Then I bought 999, Mass Effect 2, and I'm buying Dead Space 2 today.

Yikes. Backlog grows!

I recently had to sell off my DSi to pay for a ticket, but it's my birthday tomorrow and the cash is rolling in and I'm EXTREMELY tempted to rebuy a DS and 999 - especially with the talk of it being rare soon...

I've tried this before with my RPG backlog, I don't think I ever made it past 2400AD. Actually looking at my collection, I would actually need to start with all of the .hack games now.

Kinda curious how those first couple fellas did... ;)

I'd be interested in something like this if I could get in on the ground floor. Too bad this thread kicked the bucket before it got off the ground...

I like my ginormous backlog. It makes me feel safe. Even if I have to go on a super tight budget I'll still have new games to play for a year or so.

Playing through The Witcher finally. Bought it day one too. Soo good.

Holy crap that is a long time for a game to sit on a backlog. 2400AD is a truly underrated gem of a game but I don't know if I could play it fresh today.
Someone needs to make a game like that but in a modern 3D engine. Like a GTA4 or Crackdown engine.

May note a bad idea. I wouldn't stick to it religiously, but on days when I'm wondering what to play going alphabetically is as good an idea as any other.

Well, I think I'm going to just play some of these games for a while, then if I lose interest, move on to the next one. What's the point of forcing myself to play a game if I'm not enjoying it?

I started clearing my Wii backlog in alphabetical order somewhere in December and I'm almost done with it now (~20 done and 3 or so left).

Next is my X360 or PS3 backlog (50 or so games) and sometime in the next decade my massive 100+ Steam catalog (I blame the holiday sales).

I have a problem...

There was always another Ultima/Wizardry/Might and Magic, etc that consumed my time when it was fresh so it was always on the back burner, and when I went back to revisit it, it was hard to get into. It's the controls now more than the graphics that tend to make it hard to play for me. Any idea how long the game takes to beat? Maybe I'll give it another shot :)

1. Steam games bought for less than 5€ because of the price, not because you really really wanted to play it, does not count as regular backlog games.
2. If you seriously have 50 PS3/XBOX360 games in your backlog, just give up and sell most of them. Because you really have to many games.

I started working on my backlog as a New Year's resolution.

Before buying a game I have to complete 3 of the ones in my backlog. If I DO buy a new game I cannot work on it until my current (or next) set of 3 games is completed.

There are only 2 exceptions to this:
1) I find a stupidly good deal
2) There is a preorder bonus or limited something I don't want to miss out on.

Both of these fall under the rule, however, that if I do buy one of them (I call them "whim" buys) that they cannot be worked on until two other sets of 3 are completed (one more than the regular rule for buying a game).

I've been managing fairly well, actually. There's a LOT of stuff for me to work through, but it seems to be roughly divided between "short" action games (don't generally take more than 10 or 12 hours, though I don't personally consider that a short game) and RPGs that vary in length. I'm trying to go through one of the RPGs per set otherwise I'll finish a ton of crap quickly and then have a glut of longer games to go through, and that may make them lose their fun.

It is a very short game if memory serves. You can dick around endlessly in the city GTA style so that made the game much longer. If you stick to the critical path it is probably very short.

Mind you I haven't done a solid playthrough of this game since the late 80s.

I hope for your sakes that you guys aren't like me and at least buy games you are mildly interested in already during these steam sales.

Well I have played some 1701 AD

This is a city builder / diplomacy game which has some similarities to the Civilization series but is more focused on individual city building. I was previously unaware that this is in a series and Dawn of Discovery is the sequel.

I played for about 3-4 hours an I will say this is a very solid city builder that also has opponents/cpu players. I didn't get into any combat other than 1 pirate ship, but I did get involved in trade with other nations.

Given that this is a city builder I will just play it a while and then scratch it off my backlog. With certain genres (Puzzle/City Building sims/multiplayer only) you can't really "beat" the game. So for these I will just play them until i am satisfied that I experienced them.

You should do a blog. I'll follow you. :]

I should probably start one too, to give me something to keep track of what I've played.

Okay as long as there's at least one other guy doing the A-Z thing I think that's how I'll try to tackle mine as well. What do you think, though, should we stick to this thread with a banned OP or would you be interested in a new one?

edit: I'm envisioning an OP where we can track which "letters" each participant is currently working on, which they have cleared, etc. I'd be willing to do that if anyone would use it.

Start that blog!
I created a Tumblr (could possibly change to Wordpress, but Tumblr has been fine so far) one where I post short opinions once I finish a game, screenshots I take during playthroughs and also my new gaming pickups... Right now it's at two games beaten, one purchased.
I still need to clean it up, once that's done I'll post the link here.

Yeah I would like to keep it here instead of a blog, I have a feeling people will stop checking the blog after too long, but will keep checking gaf. I will move mine to a new thread if needed, or I can create a new OP.

Should we keep it specific to Steam and A-Z ?

Wow, I thought my backlog was bad, but looking at some posters here I have it really easy. Should probably play everything I've wanted to before the year is out.

Aquaria
Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes Tales of Valor
Crysis Warhead
Defense Grid The Awakening
Guild Wars (obviously no beating it, but I'll be sinking some hrs into it soon)
Gyromancer
King's Bounty
King's Bounty Armored Princess
King's Bounty Crossworlds
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Super Meat Boy
Titan Quest: Immortal Throne

Ignore expansions and it's not too shabby.

Also DL'd Champions Online and LOTR Online cause they went F2P, there go a few hours.

Go for a new thread, we should find some use for the OP down the road anyway.

I wouldn't mind posting my short reviews and asking for advice on what to play next.
And it's a bit different from Backlogathon, so I doubt there's a problem with having another thread.

So...

Between trying to 1000 gamerscore Dead Space 1 and Dead Space 2...

I am tackling and going to finish...

Fallout 3 - Broken Steel, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta.

I'm about 90 minutes into Zeta at the moment and I'm hoping to grind on a bit of it tonight after work.

Basically, the goal is to do a chapter of Dead Space 1, a chapter of Dead Space 2, and about an hour of Fallout 3 a day.

Looking at my save on Fallout 3, I've already put 40 hours into that game. Christ it's huge. More updates to come.

I started with games where I don't have any Trophies/Achievements and as a matter of that my first backlog game is "Trash Panic" god I hate it already. It is just an unforgiving game, one mistake and you are literally drowning in Junk.
First 3 Stages are going kinda ok but then it goes downhill in to hell.

But at least I have a reason to Blog again. :)

Doing my backlog of 34 games in alphabetical order would be bad cause I wouldn't be able to play Yakuza 3 or YDKJ for months! The support group idea I do like. I've put 17 and a half hours into Shining Force Neo this month and can't even begin to guess how many times I've heard HOT STUFF COMING YOUR WAY and BEWARE MY MIGHTY POLE(?). The horror! x_x
