UC San Diego condemns party mocking black history
Wednesday, February 17, 2010

(02-17) 11:48 PST San Diego, CA (AP) -- The chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, is condemning a ghetto-themed party organized by fraternity students to mock Black History Month, but officials say nobody is likely to be disciplined.

The weekend "Compton Cookout" held off-campus was offensive and a "blatant disregard of our campus values," Marye Anne Fox said in a statement e-mailed this week to staff and 29,000 students. "We reject acts of discrimination ... and we will confront and appropriately respond to such acts," Fox said.

A Facebook posting advertising the party invited people to a condominium complex off-campus "in hopes of showing respect" during Black History Month, according to a copy posted on the Web site for San Diego TV station 10News. The posting offered a dress code heavy on T-shirts, rapper-style urban clothing by makers such as FUBU, and gold chains. Women were urged to go as "ghetto chicks," described in the invitation as having gold teeth, cheap clothes and "short, nappy hair." The invitation said the party would serve watermelon, chicken, malt liquor, cheap beer and a purple sugar-water concoction called "dat Purple Drank."

The party theme disgusted some students on campus, where blacks comprise less than 2 percent of the undergraduate class. "These are the people I go to school with, and knowing that they're mocking my culture and the history of black people is really offensive," sophomore Elize Diop said.

The party was organized by members of several UCSD fraternities, according to an e-mail from Gary Ratcliff, assistant vice chancellor for student life, that was obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune. A call to the university's Intrafraternity Council, which oversees campus Greek fraternities, was not immediately returned Wednesday. The local chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha was the only fraternity identified in Ratcliff's e-mail.

In an e-mail Wednesday, chapter President Garron Engstrom said the event was not endorsed by the fraternity and violated its code of conduct. Those involved will be disciplined, he added. "The fraternity regrets the display of ignorance and error-of-judgment made by any individual members who may have attended or were associated via social-media with the racially-offensive party," Engstrom wrote.

It was unlikely that the university will discipline anyone because the party was not sanctioned by the university or any student organization, so there wasn't any technical violation of school policies, UCSD spokesman Jeff Gattas said
.

The sad part is, UCSD already bans fraternity houses and they are also banned within University City where UCSD is located.

so it's a private thing that has nothing to do with the university except university members going to it?

Depends on the relationship of frats and the university. If frats are university sanctioned organizations, then yes, the university has something to do with it.

aha

don't realy understand the whole university-fraternity relationship since we don't have those here

Also, it reflects badly on the reputation of the university and all that. UCSD doesn't want to lose a bright kid, a grad student, funding, or a professor because of something stupid like this.

As someone that was born and grew up in Compton , let me respectfully say... fuck these assholes.

As someone that was understands and appreciates alliteration, let me repectfully say.... its just an excuse for a party and Compton Cookout sounded better than Ghetto Gangbang Grill Off.

Edit: Got I hate when anyone uses the word ghetto to describe anything of black culture it is just such a bad connotation. I guess redneck or white trash might balance it a bit but ghetto just seems a little more offensive. When it could be properly used as a way to describe a jimmy-rigged object or tool.

The sad part is the descriptions described a bunch of kids who dressed and acted like this at the mall over the weekend.

But as a black man I find myself getting constantly disgusted and embarrassed when I go out in public by this behavior and feel as if I should be apologizing to someone.

Read The Invitation To The "Compton Cook Out," As Posted On Facebook:

"February marks a very important month in American society. No, i'm not referring to Valentines day or Presidents day. I'm talking about Black History month. As a time to celebrate and in hopes of showing respect, the Regents community cordially invites you to its very first Compton Cookout.

For guys: I expect all males to be rockin Jersey's, stuntin' up in ya White T (XXXL smallest size acceptable), anything FUBU, Ecko, Rockawear, High/low top Jordans or Dunks, Chains, Jorts, stunner shades, 59 50 hats, Tats, etc.

For girls: For those of you who are unfamiliar with ghetto chicks-Ghetto chicks usually have gold teeth, start fights and drama, and wear cheap clothes - they consider Baby Phat to be high class and expensive couture. They also have short, nappy hair, and usually wear cheap weave, usually in bad colors, such as purple or bright red. They look and act similar to Shenaynay, and speak very loudly, while rolling their neck, and waving their finger in your face.

Ghetto chicks have a very limited vocabulary, and attempt to make up for it, by forming new words, such as "constipulated", or simply cursing persistently, or using other types of vulgarities, and making noises, such as "hmmg!", or smacking their lips, and making other angry noises, grunts, and faces. The objective is for all you lovely ladies to look, act, and essentially take on these "respectable" qualities throughout the day.

Several of the regents condos will be teaming up to house this monstrosity, so travel house to house and experience the various elements of life in the ghetto.

We will be serving 40's, Kegs of Natty, dat Purple Drank- which consists of sugar, water, and the color purple , chicken, coolade, and of course Watermelon. So come one and come all, make ya self before we break ya self, keep strapped, get yo shine on, and join us for a day party to be remembered- or not. "

America: A nation of racists*

*When using the same logic exhibited in threads regarding Australia and racial issues

That is not true. That is the logic that Australians seem to perceive. The truth is, any time there is criticism, or people point out certain history with regard to racial issues, Australians on this board (and seemingly outside of it as well), seem to think people are calling the whole nation racist. You guys tend to get incredibly defensive.

It's probably because they're all criminals. :D

Pikes are douchebags no matter where you go. I assume that's what Pi Kappa Alpha is. That or Castle, but I think that was Pi Kappa Phi. Anyway, not sure if their practices were anything like at RPI, but they were by far the largest fraternity, with over 120 brothers. They had an inter-fraternity fight downtown Troy one night because brothers didn't know each other. What a bunch of dicks. PEACE.

Yea, I went to UCSD as an undergrad and this shit does not surpise me at all. The place is full of arrogant upper-middle class Asians and White kids. Barely below the surface racism/classism is quite prevalent... most of the kids I knew had mommy and daddy pay for every cent of their education. So fucking glad I'm out of that world and living happily in the Bay Area.

I know. I don't actually believe it, it was just a joke.

And fuck you if you think we're defensive you prick!

At least you're not black. I would see more black people on any given day in BANGKOK, THAILAND than I ever did at UCSD.

You should do Asian day in retaliation. Call it "Dog Cookout" or something.

Yeah yeah I know. Eye for an eye is a horrible form of retribution.

I laughed so fucking hard. :lol :lol

Why is that my school always ends up on the news for incredibly stupid things? First it was that admissions fiasco and now it's a racist party? Why can't it ever be anything positive?

(I didn't even know there was a party like this until I got an email from the school)

The thing that I really don't get is a *ton* of Frats have gotten in trouble for this EXACT same thing.

At what point will other frats figure out that this is a stupid fucking idea.

I mean, the first group to do it.. maybe they are just stupid/weren't thinking.

But at this point even if you don't see a problem with the activity there are plenty of examples out there of people getting kicked off campus for this shit.

There are fraternities at UCSD? That's news to me. Nothing more pathetic than seeing people hang out at CLICS (computer library) during finals week...

Why do you suggest this? Were the purps mostly Asian or something? For some reason I envisioned this to be mostly white people. Asians are usually much more discreet with their racist activities. Take my neighbors for instance; I had no idea they were racist until I came home one day and caught these two little Asian kids burning matchsticks crossed like a crucifix on my doormat. For the longest time I wondered why I had ashes in the shape of an uneven 'X' in front of my apartment.

Clearly I am not cut out for primitive fraternity life, because that party sounds like it would have flat-out sucked.

What the hell? :lol
